I love puzzle games, and the ones in here were mostly nice to solve -- I only struggled with one (
namely the one with the black and white pieces on the green board, reminiscent of Komi/Go
), the others were either pleasantly easy, or pleasantly challenging. The only reason why I'm giving this game a bad review is not the simple graphics, the rudimentary dialogue or how short the game is...but the hidden religious "propaganda". There is nothing in the game description -- perhaps a slight hint at the game title, even so, not really obvious -- that alludes to it being a Christian-based story, yet slowly the game starts taking the plot towards that very direction. It starts with a brief mention of "God" here and there, then at some point a chapter about going to church -- admittedly, a brief one --, but what was supposed to be a "hauntingly beautiful shadow world [...], a 2D puzzle-solving adventure game" and an "emotional journey of growth and self-discovery" basically becomes a biblic lecture on how we go to heaven after we die. I'm not against using games to promote personal (or even religious) beliefs, good values and life lessons...as long as they are properly marketed as such, so I choose to spend money on this kind of content or not. Some people don't buy great games that have scenes of animal suffering, some people don't by great games that impose moral dilemmas, some people don't buy games that make them dizzy and nauseous with the camera/movement system...I wish I was aware of this being a religious puzzle game instead of a generic puzzle game before putting my money in it. And again, I would be completely fine with a game that teaches death is not the end, the importance of doing chores and being virtuous...but linking that to religion without explicit warning really annoys me and makes me feel tricked. For those who don't care about such petty and vain motives, it's a nice little game, well-made in spite of its simplicity, but their lack of transparency is the reason I'm giving this a thumbs down.
This game took me a little over 7 hours to complete. It is so far the best game I've played all year. I know that sounds weird, but the story is amazing in this. I was literally teary eyed towards the end. The dev does a great job of making a Christian game and does an even better job of showing the good and negative in people's lives. People are imperfect but this game is brilliant. I highly recommend this game, even if you are not a Christian. This does not push Christianity down your throat but it makes it more real. It has some very original puzzles too. It might be easy for some of you master puzzle solvers but it was perfect for me!
Wow, I sure played this at the right time in my life. If you are going through heavy seasons of life, this game may be for you. The puzzles were mostly fun and he story was captivating. hug your loved ones, forgive and seek forgiveness, and be mindful of what is taking priority in your life.
A simple and lovely game with a fantastic, touching story. It's so rare to see a game that doesn't shy away from the reality of life's myriad tragedies, from small to all-encompassing, while espousing strong moral lessons - and not being afraid to openly couch them in Christian terms. How refreshing it is to see devout Christian characters portrayed realistically: as extremely flawed, but humble and filled with hope. Honestly, even if the game was a wash, I would have nothing but admiration for the developers for celebrating their faith in such a sincere and inspiring way. But it's actually a very good game too! I have to admit, I was skeptical at first - the opening sequences aren't the strongest, and the writing takes a while to step out of cliche zone. Once Joseph came into the picture, though, I started to see the subtlety and sensitivity of the unique story, which is bolstered by some excellent music and extremely creative, abstract visual design. If you're a puzzle fan, you'll find these on the easy side, but still presenting enough of a challenge not to get boring. It's also a good length, with ample substance for the asking price without overstaying its welcome. It's not perfect, of course. Some of the puzzles aren't very fun (looking at you, repeated face-matching) and I could not for the life of me understand the physics for the 'flicking' games. The character design is a little too simple, and the dialogue could, at times, use more nuance (especially during the sadder scenes). The worst element by far is the nonsense(?) language the characters speak - it's just a dozen sound bites recycled over and over, and sometimes the chosen sound is really jarring with the emotion of the scene. Imagine, hearing "pelli GRAN MOLINA" in a chipper tone while someone's grieving, or the even more annoying "uh UH uh!". If I have one suggestion for the developers, it would be to take the voices out completely. Minor flaws aside, I 100% recommend this game. In addition to the beautiful art and music, the symbolism in many puzzles is incredibly thought-provoking, the direction of the story is uncommon and uncommonly brave, and the ending made me tear up a little (even if the final machine was a little... off-putting?). Thank you, developers, for having the courage to say something beautiful with your staunch faith!
I really liked the puzzles on this game they were mostly simple but they hit the spot. The story was sweet and carefully crafted and the characters seemed different enough. I only wish there was a Chapter page at the beginning of each Chapter so you could see where you were but otherwise it was really good!
puzzles are okay (two are literally terrible) but it is religious propaganda in the end kind of ruins the game for me. the story would be okay if it's end message wasn't everything will be great cause...god.
I have a lot of thoughts about this game. If you only look at the puzzles and gameplay, it's a really good game. Puzzles are easy, but pretty enjoyable throughout. I was never stuck, and things were clear and well designed. But I take a lot of issue with a game that is going to jam in a religious-based narrative without giving any sort of mention to it on the store page / description / trailer. If you want to tell a story of faith... sure, whatever, you do your thing. But be open about it and tell people that's what they're going to get. I'd just avoid it, because I do not like religions and what is done in their name. Especially Christianity. Also, it's pretty hilarious that the incurable illness is called Karenia. The disease of Karens. Since there is a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of Christians and Karens. Either a big self-own, or an amazing person on the localization team.
