Free game with very slow pacing. Graphics are quite limited with maybe one sound in the whole game. But that's not what makes the game good. The game has one of the best communities. The nature of it taking a very long time to do things means the relations between other players bears greater weight with longevity. If you like progress bars and some spreadsheets you might like this one but I'd wager it's not for everyone. Hop in join an alliance as soon as you can.

I'v played this game many years. It has a great community that will help new players get started. I highly recommend it,
Developed and published by Illyriad Games, Illyriad - Grand Strategy MMO is a fantasy empire-building experience that embraces complexity, patience, and player-driven interaction on a scale rarely seen in modern online strategy games. Instead of focusing on short matches or instant rewards, the game presents a persistent world where every city, alliance, trade agreement, military campaign, and diplomatic decision contributes to an evolving political landscape. It is a title built for long-term thinkers, rewarding careful planning and cooperation rather than quick reactions. The journey begins with a single settlement that gradually grows into a powerful city through resource management, infrastructure development, and technological advancement. While this premise may sound familiar to fans of strategy games, Illyriad distinguishes itself through the sheer depth of its systems. City growth involves far more than constructing buildings and collecting resources. Every structure serves a purpose within a broader economic and strategic framework, forcing players to consider how each decision affects future development. Expansion feels meaningful because every investment contributes to a long-term vision rather than offering immediate gratification. Research is one of the game's defining features. Hundreds of technologies are available, covering everything from military doctrines and advanced crafting techniques to economic improvements and diplomatic capabilities. Progressing through these research paths requires careful prioritization, as no player can immediately master every discipline. The technology system encourages specialization, allowing empires to develop distinct identities. Some players become military powers, others establish economic dominance, while some focus on diplomacy, exploration, or resource production. This flexibility creates a remarkable amount of strategic diversity. Military gameplay is equally detailed. Rather than relying solely on overwhelming numbers, successful campaigns depend on preparation, intelligence gathering, terrain considerations, logistics, and coordination. Armies can be assembled from numerous unit types, each serving different battlefield roles. Siege warfare, scouting operations, defensive strategies, and large-scale alliance conflicts all contribute to a military system that rewards patience and planning. Victories often feel earned because success requires more than simply recruiting larger forces. What truly separates Illyriad from many other strategy MMOs is its emphasis on diplomacy. The political environment is largely shaped by players rather than scripted events. Alliances negotiate treaties, coordinate defenses, settle disputes, and occasionally wage massive wars that involve hundreds of participants. Relationships between groups can remain stable for years or collapse overnight depending on shifting interests and strategic objectives. The diplomatic layer transforms the game into a living political simulation where communication and negotiation are often just as powerful as military strength. The economic systems deserve special recognition. Illyriad features a sophisticated player-driven marketplace where resources, crafted items, rare materials, and strategic goods are traded continuously. Some players spend the majority of their time operating commercial networks rather than building armies. Market trends, supply chains, and regional resource differences create opportunities for skilled traders to accumulate significant wealth. This alternative path to success ensures that combat is never the only meaningful activity available. Exploration adds another dimension to the experience. The world map is enormous, containing distant regions, hidden resources, dangerous creatures, non-player factions, and strategic opportunities waiting to be discovered. Geography plays a significant role in determining settlement locations and military effectiveness. Players willing to venture beyond their immediate surroundings are frequently rewarded with valuable information and opportunities unavailable to those who remain isolated. The fantasy setting is supported by extensive lore and multiple playable races, each offering unique characteristics and strategic considerations. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs all possess distinct advantages that influence city development and military composition. Combined with the numerous non-player factions scattered across the world, these elements create a setting that feels far richer than a simple backdrop for empire building. The world possesses a sense of history and identity that enhances immersion throughout the experience. Another major strength is the game's community. Because progression occurs over extended periods, cooperation naturally becomes an important part of the experience. Veteran players often assist newcomers, alliances provide guidance and protection, and diplomatic relationships encourage ongoing communication between groups. This social environment helps create a welcoming atmosphere despite the game's intimidating complexity and contributes significantly to its longevity. However, Illyriad's greatest strengths can also become barriers for some players. The game's pace is deliberately slow, with research projects, construction efforts, and strategic plans often unfolding over days or even weeks. Players accustomed to immediate feedback and rapid progression may find the experience frustrating. Success requires patience and commitment, and there are few shortcuts available for those seeking faster results. The learning curve is equally demanding. New players must learn resource management, city planning, military mechanics, diplomacy, trading systems, crafting, exploration, and alliance politics. The number of interconnected systems can initially feel overwhelming. While helpful community resources exist, mastering the game's many mechanics requires a significant investment of time and attention. The presentation also reflects the game's age. The interface prioritizes functionality over visual spectacle, and much of the gameplay takes place through menus, maps, and information screens. While this approach supports the strategic depth effectively, players seeking modern graphical presentation may find the visuals outdated compared to contemporary strategy releases. Despite these limitations, Illyriad remains one of the most ambitious examples of a true grand strategy MMO. Its persistent world, deep economic systems, extensive research options, meaningful diplomacy, and player-driven politics create an experience that few competitors can match. The game encourages long-term thinking and allows players to pursue success through numerous paths rather than forcing them into a single style of play. Illyriad - Grand Strategy MMO is ultimately a game for dedicated strategists who enjoy building something over time. It rewards patience, intelligence, cooperation, and careful planning with a level of depth that is increasingly rare in online gaming. While its slow pace and complex systems will not appeal to everyone, those willing to embrace its design philosophy will discover a remarkably rich fantasy world where every decision has the potential to influence an entire empire. Highly recommended. Very established community and a ton of depth. It's like Travian on steroids.
Takes some patience, but great community!
