Turn limit is WAY too harsh. Its worse than XCOM2, and at least there you didn't have it even start until you were detected. Here you will get 7 turns, sometimes 8 to defeat a bunch of HP bricks. And I saw no way to get any better at the game, doesn't tell you what you get from challenges, and unlike other types of games like this I saw no currency you could use to spend post run to improve either. If the turn limit was totally removed I could see this being fun. And yes, I mean TOTALLY removed. It's got enough other things to make it difficult that it doesn't need it. Until then I have to give it a negative review.
Maravilla pixel art!
I guess I thought this was going to be a cross between Into the Breech and FTL. Both, of which, are amazing games be themselves. With Ignited Steel, the combat mechanics are similar to Into the Breech, but lack the punch. I found that most missions were wash rinse and repeat. Sure, you get to customize your mech, but I found the upgrades and customization too limiting. There's also the Heat mechanic which is kind of cool. Instead of most games with a similar feature, IS uses heat as double edged sword (buffing damage output while also taking increased damage). These small twists were not enough and just made the game feel tedious with the wash/rinse/repeat missions. Love the graphics and art. The music is on point. It's problem is the repetitive game play. The best rogue-likes are the ones where every play through feels like playing the game again for the first time. There needs to be more sub-text, more story. There needs to be more random encounters with lasting decision making. I know I'm in the minority on this game, but it's just not worth a full price sticker. If you can get it for under $10 then you might find it worth a play through or two.
6/10 I wanted to like this game... This was an clearly an attempt to merry 2 obvious inspirations - Into the beach, a rougelike where you could get screwed by RNG but more often then not, it was your fault that I really enjoyed, and FLT, an overrated RNG fest where 90% of the time you died it was bad dice rolls that I hated. Sadly this game leans more towards FTL than into the breach, despite being a mech themed strategy rougelike like into the breach was. For example, there's nothing more fun than being forced to do an escape mission or a bossfight on a high gravity planet while having reinforcements dropped right on top of me that I can't prevent. And events are best avoided because I have yet to see a positive outcome from them. Its a shame really, there are some interesting mechanics like how heat is handled and it has a good soundtrack but getting screwed time and time again by RNG just kills my interest and the many bugs put the nail in the coffin. There needs to be more mech games but less RNG fest rougelikes that plague the indie scene.
This game combines three of my favorite genres into a deep, engaging experience with tons of replayability. The mechs have enough technical dials to feel like mechs instead of Fire Emblem-esque foot soldiers, but the game makes it easy to understand what all these stats do thanks to a clear UI and well written mouse-over tooltips. Music and sound are good as well. The gameplay is absolutely fantastic- it avoids the pitfalls of other tactics games by having interesting maps with terrain that matters (admittedly not as much as XCOM, but it certainly matters more than in FFTA). The environment modifiers are interesting. The roguelike elements feed into the mech customization well, and it was smart of them to keep it restricted to a couple parts instead of going full Armored Core. If even half of this sounds good to you, this game is worth your time and money. tldr; If you like Into the Breach, buy this game. If you thought Into the Breach was boring, stiff, small, unambitious, and unsatisfying, buy this game so that you can play the game that you actually wanted.
This was a game I wanted to like, and feel it has a lot to love in the core of it, but I am just not sure if it is working as intended in its current form. I had played the pre-release demo that came out shortly before launch and loved the risk/reward concept, and had a blast with the demo. So I finally broke down and got the full release and I don't know but it feels like somewhere between launch and now, something broke? So it is explained the more your mechs heat, the more their damage increases and the more damage they take. Only, it just seemed like my mechs never gained more damage as they heated up. All the tool tips would say the damage would be increased but when I execute the turn they would hit for base damage, barely denting the beefy mobs, not the projected increased damage. As this is pretty much THE key mechanic, it feels like it makes the difficulty impossible at times, and pure rng at others. There is a lot here to love, and I am very willing to check back into the game in the future and change my review, but right now the game feels broken and impossible. (And I will admit, maybe I am not 'gitting gud' but as someone who has a couple hundred hours with Into the Breach between here and Switch, I think I SHOULD be okay based on other reviews.)
It's a pure roguelike. Extremely disappointing.
finished the tutorial and was rewarded with the "you got every other achievement!" achievement. pretty funny glitch anyway, the game's pretty shallow. rather disappointing. one of those games where i could just feel right away "oh, this is all there is, isn't there?" perhaps unfair of me, only gave it about an hour and a half, might come back someday. but i feel confident
