Terrible UI: no mouse at all, no way to rebind 'basic' keys like 'select', really obfuscated stats/options, proportions of windows are all off, text too small for the window size, etc, etc.. Beyond that, the game is super slow and even doing the tutorial doesn't really teach you anything useful. I'm all for single-person devs executing on a vision, but this one is waaay too rough to recommend. Feels like it's still in beta. You have to be *really* into creature collectors to bear through the bad design choices. 4/10
I stopped playing this game for nearly two years because I was about to fight a boss and I was scared of losing one of my Abomis. I finally worked up the guts to play again and managed to beat the boss, only to lose my very first Abomi in the next area. I screamed at my computer in absolute horror and then sat in dead silence, staring at my screen for several minutes. My entire team mourned. One of my Abomis became traumatized. But now I feel like I must keep playing and win this, because it's what my first Abomi would have wanted. (Seriously if you like mongames and/or roguelikes and/or games that have the ability to punch you in the gut so hard you don't know what to do with yourself, you should play this.)
Overall, this game feels like it was built around the unique characters and battle system, and then the development team used some scotch tape to stick the rest of the game onto it. It could have been great, but it seems like the team worked really hard on what they were most interested in and dropped the ball on everything else. This has a really cute and creative premise, using permadeath and ever-changing maps is something that I can see a lot of gameplay possibilities for. But the game doesn't really take full advantage of it. There's little to no story for the game, which made it really hard for me to stay engaged with. I forced myself past the first boss hoping that things would pick up, but it didn't. I then tried letting my team die off, to see what would happen when I started a new run. Still pretty much the same. I can appreciate the references to previous teams, but it doesn't balance out the fact that a lot of good elements don't exist. Obviously plenty of people have no problem playing a game without plot motivation (as the reviews for this game are currently very positive), but it got very boring very fast for me. The controls and layout are also somewhat lacking. To remap controls. you change which keyboard key corresponds to an Xbox controller. If you've never played the game before, you have no way of knowing which button does what to begin with. You can either guess or just deal with the defaults. Sometimes the menu options also don't work; I lost some gameplay a few times because the "save and exit" button just wasn't responding (with either keyboard or controller input). Neither of these are game-breaking, but it really makes the whole thing feel kind of unpolished. Like it's not quite done. I bought this game because of its inclusion in the "Bee's Knee's" bundle. I had heard endless praise for Bug Fables and assumed that the three games would be somewhat similar, given the crossover content and shared parent company. I was disappointed. It's a decent game, but I had been under the impression that there would be more to it than fighting, leveling up, dying, and doing it all over again. But once you play it the first time, there's not much variation at all (at least in the first couple hours of each run). Even Disc Creatures had content to keep the gameplay moving forward, despite also being more focused on character collection, etc.
For nuzlocker enthusiasts :)
I really tried to like this game given my absolute love for creature collectors, but Pokemonesque mechanics don't mix well with roguelikes IMO. It seems that each run might take a significant time investment that I don't have.
pokemon if it was a rougelike and wasn't the slowest paced game of all time so its like, actually good
Fine, I'll admit it, I cheated on my playthrough of this, after the first two deaths of my party I would restart the game mid-battle whenever someone died to a super effective attack. I did not beat the game legitimately and I am a fraud.
I'd love to give this game a postive review, because I really enjoyed my time with it, but I ran into a bug at the end that makes me unable to finish the game, so I can't reccomend it sadly. The game itself is quite fun - its basically a Nuzlock made its own game. Its also more or less a rougelike, but the focus on this aspect isnt to heavy, Nuzlock definity describes it better. Your monsters stay dead when they die, and you also cant freely choose your team because you get a random monster to recruit every few areas. You can make it easier by turning perma-death off and making it so you can choose between different monsters to recruit so its quite customizable, but the intended way to play it definitly seems to be perma-death and random recruits. That makes this "just one more run!" feeling quite catching, but its also really RNG heavy on stuff like type coverage and weaknesses, because if you for example fight a boss with water weakness but the random recruit system has not given you a water type yet you are out of luck. This adds to the challange tho! Now my bug, after beating the last of the final bosses henchmen I wanted to go fight him- only to not being able to find him anywhere on the Map. So i checked playthroughs online, and there is supposed to be one final of those mist-walls that stop you from proceding that you need all the pieces for - the final boss is behind this. So I check my Map - there is no such Wall. Okay, maybe its just a visual bug with the map, so I run alll over the world and nope, no such wall anywhere. I dont know if this is because I played the custom mode with the smaller Map and was just unlucky that my spawn for the final mini-boss/henchmen was at the upper edge of the map, so the map ended where the final boss would be, this not spawning his area and him, but this should not happen. Sucks to get really invested in the game and then not being able to see it trough
i suck at writing reviews but: me like game :D
