Hypnospace Outlaw

Can't believe I forgot to review this. Hypnospace Outlaw is one of my favorite games of all time, it was one of the first games I ever fully completed, and I have mentioned it in other reviews I have made too because it really is an amazing experience that more people should get to have. The trailers and other reviews make the game seem amazing, but even they don't do it justice. I was fully expecting a silly sandbox game, but got surprised with an incredible story and characters with more depth than any AAA game could ever have. I have played this game 3 times (moved over from an old steam account and rebought it) and I still haven't seen all the webpages or all of the characters. Clearly has tons of love put into it and deserves more attention. Plus, it goes on sale for pretty cheap if that is what is keeping you off it. I recommend this game a million times over. Oh, also, if you are looking for another game like this, there is a game called MobOS that isn't out yet and looks very promising, more of a sandbox though. Overall: I would recommend Granny Cream's Hot Butter Ice Cream to anybody who would appreciate the mix of hot butter and ice cream. You can freeze it up cool, or even put it in your microwave and make it real hot!

It's like going on the internet if the internet was good!

There is something about Hypnospace Outlaw that really took my intrigue. This game immersed me in an era I have never experienced. The era of the internet where everything was not centralized or corporatized. An era where websites felt personal with their own little quirks. An era where everything was too free, but it was fun. But enough with the rant. The music is beautiful, the atmosphere really sets the mood, everything about this game is perfect. If you just want to experience something different and new, try this game out.

Foreign and offputting and achingly familiar. Tiffany/DarkTwilightTiff felt like a previous version of myself, so her arc made me feel things I don't even have a name for. I stand with Gooper.

I played this at work without getting caught. Boss thought I was working on a project.

This has become my favourite game over time. Although once you complete the game, I don't believe it has much replay value, unless you truly wish to complete all the achievements and view every webpage (which can be worth the trouble), the experience is truly one of a kind. I often find myself thinking back to the game, even after completing it over a year ago, and still recommending it to friends.

A unique but ultimately disappointing experience. This game attempts to recreate the 90s internet and have you become a moderator of it. No fedoras, obesity or unkempt beards required! Within the first few hours, I felt this was steadily a 5/5 or a 4/5 kind of game. I was entranced by reliving the 90s internet in all its weirdness. Yep, I was there thanks to my mom working with computers at the time. We had a Dell desktop back at home, good ol' celeron and pentium processors! Yep, I made Geocities and Homestead websites via drag and drop. It was hilarious seeing that in this game, with people’s “I can’t delete this” just in the middle of their pages. Once the novelty wears off, however, you’re left with one heck of a vague and cryptic adventure game. At first, for the first 4 cases, it was fine, and I had little trouble exploring and stamping out violations. Eventually, it gets ridiculously vague. I appreciate that the game has a built-in hints page if you’re stuck, but even with those hints, there were problems I am confident I could have never figured out in 100 years. I had to eventually go find a proper guide to actually get to the credits. And for all that effort, you’re rewarded with something that barely resembles a story. Nothing grand or amazing, just ends with disappointment. I think a game like this has a lot of potential, but would I play another one just like this? Not really. Not unless the developer of this hypothetical sequel or spiritual successor commits to proper story telling. About the only “characters” I found entertaining here was Zane, and I’m guessing I’m not the only one since there’s that boomer shooter, Slayers X. I’d say if you’re the kind of player that has been formulating Half-Life 3 rumors by looking at a random string of numbers in a Valve SDK update and coming up with conspiracy theories, this game is for you. You’ll need those skills to progress. If not, look elsewhere.
