Wow. I was expecting the story to be cute and silly, something I could just relax and experience. Yet it gave me a reality check, every time a depressing line hit it was like a punch to the gut. Iris is quite literally me in almost every way. I don't know how to feel after that.. But it's not bad. Not at all, the story was fantastic, the ending was both depressing and happy. Edit: After multiple hours and multiple mental breakdowns I can say this game has changed me. Whether I changed for good or for worse, I'm not sure. But Iris is in almost every way me, and I think I'm okay with that. I like Iris, she's a really cute character and despite the fact that I share nearly every bad part about her, I embrace the fact that we are nearly one in the same. The last few lines of the game never fail to make me break into tears, we both strive for the same things, suffer from the same issues, like the same things, and yet, I am comfortable with that fact. This game has inspired me to change my life for the better. Thank you for telling this story. I'm gonna go cope with the fact Iris is dead in a way that doesn't make me depressed.

this hit a bit closer to home than I would have hoped
Dread, Despair, Hatred. Repeat
To open I absolute hate the way this game makes me feel. Not because it's bad or anything, it's actually quite excellent. I hate the way this game makes me feel because it tackles extremely real and very painful subjects. The main character Iris is a lesbian Gorgon girl with a whole lotta issues. She is a struggling musical artist in her late twenties trying to run from her past and find happiness. Iris however, has some extraordinarily bad habits and traits that instead of working on she just kind of hides and runs from. She is extremely envious and jealous, pair that up with her depression and anxiety and you have the recipe for a ticking time bomb of emotions. Sprinkle in low self esteem and a botched relationship with a person Iris was dependent on and you have turned that bomb into a thermonuclear device of catastrophic emotional ruin. Every time Iris starts talking it gets progressively more hostile towards herself and immensely more uncomfortable for me to be around. It's this vicious cycle of dreading the future, despairing her past and hating herself on the present. But rejoice for Iris has a very strange coping mechanism! She thinks of an image of a cow on a skateboard. That sounds like something from a Joel G video. But in all seriousness the reason this game makes me feel uncomfortable is because of how real it is. I feel like most people have been there at the bottom. Loathing oneself. Thinking they've hit rock bottom to never escape. And like a lot of people Iris is too afraid to tackle those things and just runs away. Hoping that the past will just vanish and that the future will be better without them doing the uncomfortable task of facing your own biggest flaws. And I think that it makes this visual novel extremely effective. Now I do want to say in this review that if you are in a dark place now, you should maybe avoid interacting with this one until you are in a better place, because it is heavy. It actually hurts to see Iris treat herself the way she does even though she isn't real, because I have met people who have acted very similar to her. I do however want to congratulate the writer on this front. They show mental illness and toxic traits in a very real and ugly manner while also treating it with the respect it deserves. Not making it an "OMG I'm sooooo quirky, depression is real and I'm quirky and toxic bc of it lol" is very nice and refreshing. If you want a good albeit extremely heavy and sometimes uncomfortable story and view into mental illness then you should definitely check this one out. I'm not sure what it is with these Slavic themed visual novels that I've been really enjoying. First Everlasting Summer and now Hypnophobia. Something about these vns that really just draw me in. Keep up the good work Stick Horse.
То Hypnophobia; From Your Shadow это, просто честный опыт.
