Space is a dangerous placed for even the most seasoned starship pilot, full of asteroids, multicolored floating blocks, and space mines. It's even more dangerous when you your accelerator is stuck to the floor and your brakes are out.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating Seriously Flawed ★★☆☆☆

First Impressions
I can't recall where I obtained Hypership Out of Control (HS), but it likely came to Steam during the time when porting apps was the trend. Nowadays, the big thing seems to be trying to replicate the latest indie game that went viral. In that sense, even though I wasn't that fond of this release, at least it's not a copy cat of someone else's work. If it is, at least I don't recognize the source material because I've seen it 1,000 times elsewhere.
Gameplay
There are four game modes available: Normal, Hardcore, Super Speed, and Coin Down. As you can guess, Normal Mode throws you right into the action, with three lives, and ten levels to beat. Hardcore removes all of your lives, so you'd have to clear every stage without making a single mistake. Super Speed offers difficulty in the form of removing the cap on your maximum speed, so you'll continuously keep speeding up. Theoretically, I'm not sure if you can dodge everything, due to not having enough time to move in front of a breakable wall fast enough for your lasers to hit. You do have the same amount of lives as the Normal mode though. Coin Down requires you to constantly gather coins to sustain yourself. Practice lets you select any wave you've already reached and play through it freely, meaning that you could learn all of the upcoming obstacles and patterns in advance. Even with this available though, few people earn many of the game's achievements, as they have very low clear rates. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3714095560
Controls
This is implied by the title, but the irony is that surviving only makes it harder and harder to handle your ship. The upcoming obstacles arrive quickly, but as you learn how the developers tend to arrange obstacles, you can somewhat predict where a viable route will likely be. Sometimes I've questioned why I didn't dodge an obstacle in time, because I moved my ship far enough in front of a destructible wall, but seemingly my lasers didn't fire fast enough to clear it away.
Story
Because of the gameplay I understand why there isn't any story behind this concept, but it could have led into an interesting idea easily enough. Something going wrong with your only means of transportation through space immediately makes for a solid conflict to resolve. There's no lore to the game though; you just jump into a game mode and try not to crash. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3714096427
Visuals
As expected, space is used as the background, and you could probably switch this with several other SHMUP titles, without noticing a difference. There's nothing wrong with it, but I don't know how you'd make one iteration stand out compared to any other space game. If you activate fun stars, it'll make the background change color like a light show, but I'd think it'd be a distraction when you're trying to dodge things. Since you're not fighting enemies, something of a rarity for this genre, all of the obstacles come in the form of inanimate objects, such as blocks, barriers, and comets. Honestly, I'm less disappointed in the blandness, and more perplexed by some of the odd choices. When there's already far too many colored blocks in your game, putting eyes on some of them isn't going to turn around how I feel about your designs.
Sound Design
I don't know who's decision it was, but the title “music” is incredibly annoying. If you've heard complaints about bad music from the NES era, the worst offenders revolve around looping a short burst ad nauseum so that you get sick to death of constant repetition. That's what happens here, and it's literally looping the same one second of notes without stopping. Thankfully, once you actually start playing one of the modes, it plays a tune that's much less grating. Unfortunately, it does make use of some sound effects that are still pretty annoying, so to say it's an improvement isn't clearing the bar by much. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3714096721
Pros
🌟 You can practice levels if you really want to improve your high score. 🌟 The levels can be inverted, which would mildly change things up.
Cons
❌ It's not uncommon for your lasers to fail hitting a wall fast enough, even though you moved in front of it in time. ❌ Since the game modes don't change the levels or layouts, the gameplay gets stale and repetitive.
Tips
🔍 Keep your ship near the bottom and center of the screen, and only move it when necessary. Needlessly moving back and forth increases your chances of hitting an obstacle. 🔍 You can use the sound of your lasers hitting something as a clue. The sound of hitting an unbreakable object is different than when you blast away blocks.
Final Thoughts
Considering its price and emphasis on short bursts of gaming, this is essentially something you'd have in your library as a 10 minute time killer. There's no reason you'd ever want this to fill a larger gap in time, but if you have a short wait and don't want to scratch the surface of a much more engaging title, this could be a waiting room experience. Even if you only got this for some pocket change, I think there's many other options that would do a better job of holding your short attention span, so it's not a game I'd suggest getting.
"Hypership Out of Control" is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The mobile app is a poorly made avoidance/bullet hell game where you put your finger on your iPhone screen and swipe around to move your ship and dodge the stuff flowing down the phone screen at you. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the mobile app unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. Some of the defects in the mobile app can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, Monogame. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur/unskilled developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. You don't have to take my word about how bad the mobile app is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. "Hypership Out of Control" has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the mobile app absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for reaching max speed, trivial to achieve, but less than 7 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the mobile app. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 7 percent of players bothered playing the mobile app for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this mobile app to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother to played the mobile app? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this mobile app for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many mobile apps like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is $2 USD, on app stores, it was free (but has sice been removed, possibly for quality control reasons). Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay a premium for a free mobile app just because it's been lazily dumped on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this can be played free elsewhere, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. Who do they think we are?
