About
You are a lone adventurer in a strange, non-Euclidean world. Gather as much treasure as you can before the nasty monsters get you. Explore about 60 different lands, each with its own unique treasures, enemies, and terrain obstacles. Your quest is to find the legendary treasure, the Orbs of Yendor. Collect one of them to win! Or just ignore your quest and collect smaller treasures.
The twist is the unique, unusual geometry of the world: it is one of just few games which takes place on the hyperbolic plane. Witness a grid composed of hexagons and heptagons, straight lines which seem to be parallel, but then they diverge and never cross, triangles whose angles add up to less than 180 degrees, how extremely unlikely is it to reach the same place twice due to practically infinite size of the world (centillions of locations in just 700 steps from the starting point), and how the world seems to be rotated when you do return. All this matters for the gameplay. The game is inspired by the roguetime genre, works of M. C. Escher, and by puzzle games such as Deadly Rooms of Death.
HyperRogue is often updated! Other than the original 2D hyperbolic puzzle roguetime game, HyperRogue includes experimental modes, allowing one to change many aspects of the game for your non-Euclidean experimentation, such as racing mode, real-time "shmup" mode, 3D geometries including Thurston geometries, SteamVR virtual reality. If you want to play HyperRogue as a non-Euclidean first person shooter, it is possible too!

In VR this the most confusing and unpleasant experience I ever had, first of all, the menu by default is so close to your face that it hurts, the settings are so confusing you can't make head or tail of them, in the default VR game view the whole thing is moving with your head and is so close to your face you can't see the whole play field, of course you can change everything in the settings but good luck figuring them out! I wanted to go inside the hyperspace in VR but I got so frustrated after a half an hour I wanted to throw the headset at it... I'm sure there is a simpler way to handle all this and present a good VR experience but like this you have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. Unless you like deep diving in esoteric menus and setting options, pass this game...
Simple rules, fun to play in brief bouts. It does not let you save, however. So unless you want to marathon the very simple game you're unlikely to see what (I infer) are things that happen after you progress enough. Still, fun to drop in for 5-10 minutes of booping monsters on funny tile grids.
I've played the guided tour, done many runs and I still have no clue how any of the math behind this game works. It's sick asf though. Deceptively simple, but surprisingly difficult! You will not come across another game quite like this. Would recommend, even if it's just to support the devs.
Technically the largest 2D game I've ever played. For 3D, that would be fractal block world. First, which would be the biggest overall? Second, I wonder if those games' playerbases have a big crossover.

the weirdest puzzle roguelike ever. experience noneuclidean geometry directly and exploit it to solve combat puzzles as you explore
Great game! Unlocking all the worlds and achievements is very addicting. Sort of a bummer that you're stuck back in the same early worlds when you die, though. Each world is basically its own game that you can try to improve your high score on. But monsters and powerups can leak into adjacent worlds, with interesting results. I don't mind the simple graphics, but this concept with updated graphics would be super awesome.
Yes this is an absolute banger of a roguelike. Yes you should play this absolute banger of a roguelike. Already a classic.
Fractal Block World for cube haters
Amazing for nerds
