About
Hyperborea is a modern take on the classic First-person shooter game Wolfenstein 3D - the game that kick started the FPS revolution has been re-imagined in modern high definition graphics that is sure to push modern graphics cards to their limits. Fresh and exciting visuals for a hyper-eccentric modern era. This game is not for the low spec'd. 😉
A game, a modern benchmark, a fun and relaxing shooter, will it run Hyperborea?
You play the entire game armed with a very capable shotgun; but missing a shot will double the cool down time for the next shot. Staying in flow is vital.
Always watch your back because it's side swipes from enemies when turning corners that can catch you out.
There is no health in this game, if a monster gets near to you - that's it you die. You will however obtain a crucifix/caduceus for every 4 kills which will give you a short protection if caught by a monster, this protection lasts 3 seconds and protects you from the initial monster that caught you and any further monsters in the next 3 second time period.
Monsters make no noise until you kill them, your only way of detecting them is visually when you see them or when the way-point hand begins to shake, it will shake more aggressively the closer you are and it will only shake when an enemy is somewhere in the direction you are currently facing.
Fight your way through the hordes of enemies and complete the game, there's no story-line, just a mindless shooter with a progression through new and interesting high definition 3D content and world geometry, think of it as a relaxing adventure through a modern take on the classic Wolfenstein 3D game, the game-play is a satisfyingly repetitive shooter set in memorably themed environments where the visuals are ever changing as you progress from environment to environment on your quest to the ultimate final goal - whatever that may be.
Thanks, you are right those sounds are pretty wild! Believe it or not I did not steal those sound effects from Doom - actually the circumstances are far more interesting; Those sound effects have been created entirely from scratch by Per Kristian Risvik, the original Doom sounds having only been sampled at a measly 11 kHz Kristian took it upon himself to remake them from scratch in 32 kHz and did a marvellous job in doing so, sounding identical to the original sound effects in many cases but in a higher quality! Having based my game around providing an up-to-date Doom-esque/Wolfenstein 3D experience it just made complete sense to also include Kristians sounds! Check out Kristians website for more information about how he remade these remarkable sound effects from scratch, audio reverse engineering at it's finest!
You're right the game does look different, and it is technically quite a unique game indeed. At any point in the game your GPU could be rendering around 30 million triangles! If you are lucky the minimum it might be rendering in a single frame is 8 million triangles! In just 6 GB of disk space we are able to cram a whopping 184 million triangles of unique 3D content!! (184,597,952 triangles using 92,546,029 vertices to be exact). Not even a AAA game attempts to render the amount of triangles per frame that Hyperborea does - and get this, we even force the game to start in 16x MSAA if your graphics card supports it, otherwise we use the highest MSAA the GPU will let us use! (really, when was the last time you saw a AAA game even let you select MSAA, let alone upto 16x MSAA! this is real anti-aliasing not some temporal TSAA or DLSS AI slop). We render so many triangles that the bottleneck on most GPU's is the triangle rendering stage of the rasterization process! That means the MSAA or screen resolution in most cases makes little to no difference to the FPS - even at 1440p with 16x MSAA (that's 59 million pixels!!!) an original Intel Iris Xe iGPU from 2020 will get 30 FPS in this game. If you compare the performance of Iris Xe iGPU's since it's first release in 2020 and a modern intel CPU in 2025 the performance difference is only +13% making the Iris XE a good test case.
That's why we call Hyperborea a benchmark, it is a benchmark of triangle rasterization!
Warning: AI Slop This game is partially or completely made with talentless, soulless AI generated content.
"Hyperborea" is weirdly and incorrectly described as "high fidelity", it looks like complete garbage. It's a weak ripoff of Wolfenstein 3D, but with AI slop ("neural radiance fields" being a fancy way of saying "AI Slop") instead of real art. AI slop is never acceptable... this is disgusting. As mentioned, this features really godawful, "wrong" looking AI slop instead of genuinely and sincerely created game assets. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating real game assets or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision. AI slop sticks out like a sore thumb... and it comes across as insulting. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too, and that's glaringly obvious here. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
This is a little disturbing as the developer indicates they started stalking me and feverishly reading through my reviews... either just obsession with me on their part, or desperation to try find something in one of my other reviews that would somehow change the objectively terrible quality of this failed "game". Whatever their motivation, creeping on reviewers like this is not okay. The "developer" argues that I review a lot of games, therefore this game review isn't valid or truthful. Huh. If I changed all my other reviews to positive, would the graphics and gameplay of this crap game suddenly improve? No. The developer seeks any possible angle to throw shade at me personally to discredit my review. You can see what they are trying to do. If this was the only review I have ever written, would that change any of the properties of this game or alter the facts contained in my review? Of course not. My reviews for other games have no bearing on the dismal quality of this failed product. The developer tells complete and utter lies to hide the fact this is a bunch of AI slop. To quote their own words:
Some 3D content in the game itself is generated by neural radiance fields / photogrammetry.
Their own words: This is AI slop. The developers attitude is disgusting, denying their own direct statement (watch them edit that off the store page real fast). You can see their appalling attitude... no wonder this is a complete and utter failure. Apparently, according to this AI Slop pusher, you can't have an opinion about a crap game unless you're a AAA developer. You can't complain about the food poisoning you got from a crap restaurant unless you're a Michelin Star chef. You can see the developers deplorable attitude revealed to all... just because he's defensive about being called out for the AI Slop he admits to using. And attacking reviewers for pointing out the truth... morally, intellectually and in every other sense of the word, bankrupt. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this AI slop to anyone. Developers creeping and stalking reviewers is appalling. 3 concurrent players. What a joke. This is what failure looks like. Gamers hate AI slop and it shows.
This game is AIDS: Artificial Intelligence Dissapointing Slop It needs 4gb of disk drive, 6gb of RAM and 6gb of VRAM (I wonder why) The specs say it all the game needs a high-end gpu (i WONDER WHY)
i could not even launch the game so i replaced the files with Ultrakill's and then it became a 10/10 game the actual game looks like ai slop to me so 0/10 by looking at the trailers
as every other review says.. its ai slop. its not even worth the download, i feel like i deserve to be paid for playing it. the concept itself is sort of interesting i guess? but the execution of it.. really sucks. there isn't a title menu, a pause option, there isnt even a settings screen. the entire game is just "run around, get stuck on invisible obstacles and shoot weird blob things" and thats it. if a genuine developer without any use of ai was to try and make something like this, it would be fine. but this game in the state its in right now? i wouldn't even recommend this as a prank
⠀
This is how I get vril.
truly the pinaccle of greatnest and i released my smeg to it
i actually enjoyed running around shooting these aliens, i do not really understand what the brains do but its still a fun shooter
это просто ♥♥♥♥♥♥ игра создана под кислотами походу , да и вообщем нихера не понятно
It's a really cool and weird looking game, but it doesn't look like it can actually be finished. I made it through like 50 rounds of it and while it was fun at first it got super repetitive, and there doesn't seem to be any ending and no score. All you do is run to a ball and touch it, then it warps somewhere else and you touch it. Unfortunately, since there's not much else to it I can't really recommend it.
