I originally wanted to write this review after I "beat" the main game and unlocked most of the collectibles, but I realized today that that mentality feels opposed to conceit of HYPERBEAT. (Plus, it's a rhythm game, so you largely get the gameplay gist within the first half of the game.) This is one of my favorite rhythm games I've played, and frankly, I'm not great at it. The dexterity required to perform the medium difficulty can be a struggle for me, let alone the hardest. I tend to bounce off rhythm games, especially ones I struggle understanding, but what this one had that all others lack is the theme of patience and focus. The music is wonderful, the aesthetic is gorgeous, the actual rhythm game itself is fun and satisfying, but it is the interactions with characters that made this game begin to lodge itself in my skull. For the first time in a long time, I don't feel the need to rush this for the sake of completion. I am probably going to be playing this game for months, 30 minutes at a time. I will improve slowly, I will experience that joy, and I will move on. And that is through the diegetic reinforcement of growth. The embracing of failure, the acknowledgement of the self with its various performances, and the power of determination. Progression isn't linked to perfection, its linked to experiencing the game and paying attention. Cosmetic bonuses encourage you to work hard and practice, but the game does not demand you be the best you can be. It only asks (at minimum) that you care and that you focus, and it has motivated me like very few games have. It's vibrant, it's evocative, it's funny, it's captivating. HYPERBEAT feels like one of those pieces of art that I'd have a hard time explaining why exactly I like it, except by saying, "It's just really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good." It is not an easy system, but few rhythm games are. If you have the wrist strength and a few extra minutes in your week, I cannot recommend this game enough. It takes on an almost meditative quality as you drift through the world, talk to strangers, and take in the atmosphere. So, just take it slow, and enjoy the dream.

Made me bawl my eyes out during the tutorial. Play Hyperbeat, enjoy the journey
"No time spent in passion can ever be considered wasted" okay but where are my unlockable cosmetics?
What an absolute gem of a game. Great soundtrack for the rhythm challenges and the hub world you spend time in between those could have easily been a separate game of it's own. Dialogues are sparse but convey just enough to know who you're dealing with. It's an actual, wholesome game that has something to say. Who knew a rhythm game could do that?! Easily my favorite game I've played this year.

A wonderful game! I love the art direction and the music is fantastic. I like that the game doesn't punish you for making mistakes. There is a zen-like state that hits as you get better at the game. You hit a flow state. Can't wait to see what the dev create next!
