Despite being quick, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Lots of little bonuses, and an intriguing storyline. Honestly, I only wish it was longer!
This is definitely their most interesting game
How We Got Here is a weird little adventure game that starts with me waking up on a floating island as a robot with absolutely no idea what is going on. From there I have to explore the islands around me, figure out how to reach new areas and slowly work out what happened to me and everyone else. I like how quickly the game gives me a mystery without making everything feel overly serious. There is something quite relaxing about wandering around these strange floating places while also knowing there is something much bigger going on underneath everything. The exploration is simple, but I think that works in the game's favour. I am mostly looking around, interacting with things, talking to characters and working out how I can move forward. Each island has its own little mysteries and things to discover, so I am encouraged to actually look around rather than just rushing from one objective to the next. There are also decisions that can affect how my playthrough develops, which gives some of the conversations more importance. I like that the game does not need a huge combat system to keep me interested because the main reason I want to continue is finding out what is actually happening. The characters are probably one of the stronger parts for me. I meet other survivors during the journey and can build relationships with them, and the fully voiced dialogue gives them more personality than I expected from such a small free game. The tone can also change quite a bit. One moment I can be enjoying the colourful and almost cute presentation, and then something feels much more unsettling underneath it. That mixture of relaxing and slightly creepy works well because it keeps the world from feeling completely harmless. The biggest problem for me is that the gameplay itself is fairly limited. There are no deep combat systems or complicated puzzles that I can spend ages mastering. A lot of my time is spent exploring and figuring out what the game wants me to interact with next. That is fine when I am interested in the story, but there are moments where I feel like I am walking around looking for the next thing to trigger rather than actively solving something. I think the mystery is strong enough to keep me moving, but the actual mechanics could have used a little more variety. I also think the presentation is a bit rough in places. The unusual 2D visuals give the game its own personality and I actually like how strange some of the islands and characters look, but it does not have the polish of a larger adventure game. Some of the environments can feel quite simple and the movement is not particularly exciting. For me, that is easier to overlook because the game is free and the atmosphere is clearly more important than flashy graphics. I would rather have an interesting world with a few rough edges than a polished game with nothing memorable going on. The short and focused nature of the experience also works both ways for me. I like that it does not drag the mystery out forever, and there are 15 achievements that give me a few extra reasons to look around and experiment with different choices. At the same time, I finish feeling like there could have been more to explore and more ways for my decisions to matter. The basic idea is good enough that I would have liked to see the islands, characters and story pushed further. Overall, How We Got Here is a charming and unusual little adventure that I think is worth checking out because of its atmosphere and mystery. I like the floating islands, strange characters, voiced dialogue and the way the game mixes cute visuals with something a little more unsettling. The limited gameplay and rougher presentation keep it from reaching the higher scores I give to games with more depth, but I still think the central idea is strong and the free price makes it very easy for me to appreciate. It is the kind of game I can sit down with for a short while, explore a strange world and enjoy without needing to commit to a huge adventure. Rating: 7.6/10
Análise de How We Got Here
How We Got Here é uma pequena aventura indie com personalidade.
