About
HopSquash! is a spiritual successor to the classic DOS game "Jump 'n Bump!" It's a simple little game for people of all ages to play together. Give a controller to a non-gamer friend and watch them get caught up in it! Just move and jump! Great for parties! And parents, you choose to have candy or confetti instead of blood, as this is a great game to play with the family too!
Never run out of controller options - Mix and choose; keyboard adds 2 players, mouse adds 1 player, gamepads can add one player each, or can be split to add 2 players each! No settings, just grab a controller, and start pressing buttons to join in!
(Permission was given by Andreas Brynervall, artist for Jump 'n Bump, to refer to HopSquash! as a spiritual successor to "Jump 'n Bump"!)
Full gamepad support, and up to 8 players local multiplayer! Including split gamepad mode with 2 players per gamepad, so 2 gamepads means 4 players; 4 gamepads means 8 players!
Selectable animal characters, and 8 colours to customise them with
36 levels, with 6 themes (Meadows, Candy, Haunted House, Forest, Desert, Farm)
Each round takes place over 5 randomly selected levels before the final results are shown (round duration and number of rounds are configurable)
If you'd like your kids to play (as has been requested several times) you can change the "Squash Mode" between Blood, Colours or Candy.
HopSquash! went through a major overhaul where it was moved from the Godot engine to the Unity Engine, and more features were added. But the "Level Editor" and some other minor features were dropped.
When you first start the game on Steam, you'll be asked to run HopSquash! (the current game) or HopSquash! Legacy.
Legacy version is missing a lot of improvements, has less levels, and many frustrating things about the old levels have been fixed in the new version which are not present here.
But the Legacy version contains a Level Editor, which didn't get ported across to the new version. NOTE: The Mac version doesn't support level editing in either version of the game.
The Legacy version is also compatible with 4:3 monitors and custom arcade cabinets. Custom arcades cabinets use an IPAC which lets you convert button presses into keyboard key signals. By default, this game allows for 2 players on the keyboard, but by editing the settings.conf file and setting "keyboard_only=true" will add 2 extra players on the keyboard, controlled by the keys YHGJ and P;L'. You can bind these keys in your IPAC settings to your joysticks and buttons, which will allow you 4 players on your home made arcade cabinets. (Not enabled by default because having 4 players on an actual keyboard is not only impractical but will hit the simultaneous key press limit on standard keyboards.)
I love Jump 'n Bump, and I have recently thought that it's a shame it's locked away in its DOS form and is limited to only using 1 gamepad. And as good as that original level is, wouldn't it be cool if there were more levels? And more players possible? And a built in level editor so that pretty much anyone can get in and start making levels without having to learn Photoshop etc? So I set out to make an expanded version, going full time into game development.
This was to be called "Super Jump 'n Bump". I got in touch with one of the original creators, Andreas Brynervall (artist) and his only requirement for me to sell this commercially is to not use the original name or assets, and I can refer to the new game as a "spiritual successor". So now we have HopSquash!

Scratching that itch you didn't know you had: Playing oldskool Jump'n'bump with your friends and a lot of ai-controlled opponents in one-minute-bouts. Resulting in ultimate cutesy carnage! Way too much fun for its own good...
So far, pretty fun! I like the music, the art style, its great! My only complaint is the lack of online battles. I want to play locally, or match up with my friends via friend battle. Thats just my nitpick though. The AI is challenging so I don't mind too much.
I am a fan of local multiplayer games, especially games that are simple to learn yet difficult to master. This is a great example of such a game. The artwork looks very nice in an authentically retro way (it's not just the faux retro, lazy chunky-pixel look that resembles no actual games from the 80s or 90s and seems more like an excuse to not work on the art). The music and sound effects are also great and again, seems like something you'd hear in a arcade in 1983. I have to also commend the dev for not only offering a censored mode, but a censored mode lock that a parent can flag to prevent the kids from even knowing there is a non-censored mode. The gore is amusing, but why cut yourself off from lots of young would-be players by not including a option to turn it off.
This game is great! I loved Jump 'N Bump back on my older computers and this captures the feel of it perfectly! There was a great sense of community around the old game as well, people would create their own levels and share them online. So the inclusion of a level editor was a no-brainer. It's a simple level editor that's absolutely a breeze to use. I played around with it some and was able to create some simple levels in just minutes. I hope you can get steam workshop integration up soon! it'd be awesome to see everyone's levels :D I do have maybe a couple suggestions: 1. Since the Down button doesn't really do anything I don't quite see the point in having to push jump and down at the same time to go through a semi-solid platform (or whatever you call those.) It'd be a bit simpler if you just had to press down. 2. it'd be cool if in levels with no platforms at the bottom the characters would "loop" around to the top of the screen and keep falling (or maybe add some new mechanic to the game like teleporters which could accomplish the same goal and more) Overall, great job in re-imagining a classic!
Very fun game! I espexcially enjoy the family friendly blood explosion that appears when you jump on a character :)
Remake of an old classic: Jump 'n' Bump :-) My friends and I used to play Jump 'n' Bump quite a lot back in the day on one computer or even on several computers via LAN. So what's so fun about HopSquash/Jump'n'Bump: * Easily accessible since it's just left, right and jump. * Kills are satisfying and the cute graphics in combination with the blood splatter (which can be disabled in the options) is hilarious. * Instant respawns means that you're right back in the action after getting stomped.
Hopsquash added features:
* I can now play on resolutions higher than 400x256 (or 800x512 which some graphics cards could handle.) * End of round timer + configurable number of rounds for a match. * In game options for: "no blood", round timer, number of rounds per match, etc. * AI players + several different difficulties for AI. * 2 players per controller for up to 8 players on 4 controllers. * Larger levels. * Crate boxes with modifiers corresponding somewhat to the "secret" game modifiers in the original jump 'n' bump. * Several different animals, not only bunnies. * Built in level editor * Steam Remote Play Together: Not tested with this game yet but should work as a way of playing online with friends.
Verdict:
Thanks dev! I love that you took an old gem from my past and refurbished it! :-) If you want a quick competitive game with easy controls to play with friends: Get it! If you're a jump 'n' bump fan like me: Get it!
Some suggestions:
Hitbox: I think the hitboxes of the characters should be bigger. It sometimes feels like a player should've made a kill but it's just that their hitboxes didn't collide. Air control: If possible make the air control tighter which is important for both dodging and hitting the other player when it tries to avoid being stomped. (Could just be that I'm used to air control from the original.) Crate boxes: Since the modifiers in the crate boxes generally have a negative effect for the player who activates the box it's not a power up so I suggest making the modifier affect all players and also have an option in the menu to disable the crate boxes. Rounds/Match system: * Put a crown on the player who is leading the match (or round) that way it's easier for everyone to gang up against the "leader". * I suggest making a match system be like Duck Game so instead of accumulating kills across rounds, you get points for your finishing position every round. This way it works with both time based rounds and kill based rounds. (Currently I don't see how the match is going until the match is over.) * Add an option to play for a certain number of kills. e.g. first to 30 kills wins the round.
Fan of the old jump n bump from the 90s. Used to sit there playing jump bump as we called it. As kids 4 of us on one keyboard those were the days . This is very similar. I really like this game. I certainly would like more levels but I guess maybe one day lol.
Picked this up on sale but wholly recommend at full price for a bit of fun. Especially if you played this when younger and want some nostalgia. Worked well using steams remote play system. The only cons I have are small maps and lack of map editing ability unless using the legacy mode. For the most part the maps that are in the game are good, I would just prefer to be able to make some that are more to my liking. Fully recommend!
2 out of 2 children in my household recommend this game. But it's not something I'd be willing to play for longer than 20 minutes in one go. UPDATE 3 months later: If you have 5 minutes and need to reward your children or take your mind off things, this is the game. It takes 10 seconds to start and 5 minutes later (5 one minute games), everybody has a smile on their face. Easily the most concentrated fun you can have in 5 minutes. Works well on Linux and with crappy controllers. There are things I'd change, though. I need a level editor (not just for the legacy version) and access to some library of user generated levels would also be great. I would also like to blacklist a level or two.
Simple but effective
