Hopeguard is a concise third-person fantasy adventure that takes a familiar tale of knights and dragons and reshapes it into something more thoughtful and emotionally driven. Developed by Hopesquad Studio and published by UQAT - Création et nouveaux médias, the game places you in the armor of a warrior belonging to the Hopeguard, an order whose generations-long purpose has been the destruction of dragons. With almost every dragon gone, only the Dragon Queen remains, seemingly leaving one final mission between the protagonist and the completion of that ancient crusade. What begins as a conventional heroic assignment soon challenges the assumptions behind the conflict and gives the adventure a surprisingly melancholic identity. The strongest aspect of Hopeguard is the way it handles its premise. The Dragon Queen is not simply presented as another enormous fantasy creature that exists to provide a climactic battle. As the last survivor of her species, her circumstances immediately complicate the idea that eliminating her is unquestionably heroic. The journey gradually encourages the player to consider the consequences of the Hopeguard's campaign and whether traditions inherited from previous generations deserve to be followed without question. This gives the story themes of grief, responsibility, perspective, and acceptance without requiring an excessively complicated narrative. Environmental storytelling plays an important role in communicating this history. Players travel through forests, caves, ancient ruins, and other locations bearing the scars of a conflict that has continued for generations. The abandoned structures and remnants scattered throughout the world are not merely decorative fantasy scenery. They help establish what earlier warriors sacrificed and what the war has done to both sides. The relatively linear structure works in the game's favor here, allowing environments and story moments to remain closely connected rather than being diluted across an unnecessarily large open world. Exploration is accompanied by environmental puzzle solving. Ancient magical devices and sacred crystals become central to progression, with players manipulating and realigning mechanisms to restore their functionality. These puzzles generally emphasize observation and spatial understanding instead of demanding extremely complicated solutions. This makes Hopeguard approachable and keeps the narrative moving at a steady pace, although dedicated puzzle enthusiasts may find the challenges less demanding than they would prefer. The mechanics are primarily there to support exploration and atmosphere rather than turn the game into a hardcore puzzle experience. The protagonist's shield also fits naturally into the overall concept. It represents the character's training and identity as a Hopeguard while providing an important connection between the knightly fantasy and the gameplay. More interestingly, the character begins the adventure prepared to fulfill a violent purpose, while the story increasingly encourages a broader understanding of the situation. That contrast helps distinguish Hopeguard from fantasy adventures where morality is simply divided between heroic knights and evil monsters. Presentation is another significant strength. The dark fantasy environments establish a lonely, almost mournful atmosphere, while forests, subterranean passages, ruined architecture, magical elements, and dragons provide enough visual variety to keep the journey engaging. The third-person viewpoint allows the environments to remain prominent and complements a game that expects players to pay attention to their surroundings. Cinematic sequences add weight to major narrative moments without transforming the experience into something overly theatrical. Hopeguard's focused scale inevitably creates limitations. Players expecting extensive role-playing systems, elaborate character builds, dozens of combat abilities, huge areas filled with side quests, or a lengthy campaign should adjust their expectations. This is a deliberately smaller narrative adventure. Its linear progression also means that replay value may be limited after the story has been completed and its puzzles have been solved. Mechanical depth is secondary to storytelling, exploration, and atmosphere, so players primarily interested in challenging combat or intricate puzzles may find the experience somewhat light. On Steam Deck, Hopeguard does not currently have an official Valve Steam Deck compatibility rating confirming it as Verified or Playable. Its Windows-focused requirements mean SteamOS users may need Proton, and compatibility should therefore be regarded as unofficial rather than guaranteed. The game's third-person design and controller-oriented gameplay conceptually suit handheld play well, but players should not interpret that as confirmation of flawless Steam Deck operation. Until an official compatibility assessment is available, it is more accurate to classify the game as having unverified Steam Deck compatibility. Taken as a whole, Hopeguard succeeds by understanding the boundaries of its own project. Rather than stretching a straightforward premise across an oversized fantasy world, it concentrates on a short journey with a clear emotional direction. The traditional knight-versus-dragon setup gradually develops into a story about the consequences of inherited hatred and the importance of understanding what exists beyond a supposedly righteous mission. Its accessible puzzles and relatively modest mechanical complexity will not satisfy everyone, but they complement the intended experience effectively. For players who appreciate atmospheric fantasy adventures, environmental storytelling, light puzzle solving, cinematic presentation, and narratives that challenge traditional heroic assumptions, Hopeguard has considerable appeal. Its greatest accomplishment is turning an apparently simple dragon-hunting quest into a more reflective examination of conflict and loss. Despite limited mechanical depth and uncertain official Steam Deck support, its cohesive atmosphere and focused storytelling make it an engaging independent fantasy experience. Rating: 8/10
BENCE GAYET EĞLENCELİ BİR OYUN
