If you hold the 1996 cult classic Space Jam dear in your heart you will love this game.
I've tried a few different basketball games in VR. None of them ever managed to entertain me - there's always effort lacking in the gameplay itself - and ultimately you end up messing about with sliders and the entire thing just becomes stupid. That is not the case here. That concept isn't even in the same neighborhood. The key element here is honest-to-god fun - you simply cannot find it in any other basketball game / experience / emulator. And it's delivered via a genuinely novel idea with mechanics that are surprisingly unique, intuitive, and become second nature as you develop strategy to become the hooplord. Now let me talk about basketball. The sole reason I got the game is because of the potential for getting hoops in VR that a controller cannot match. This is the same reason I bought the other basketball games. You want the gratification that comes with dropping a bucket after outplaying an opponent. You want to release the shot and know it's good immediately, or even better - release and know the shot is borderline. You want to drop a shot right in the eyes of a defender. This game gives you the opportunity to do that, and by my estimation - it is the only game in town for that. And best of all - there's absolutely no messing about with sliders trying to dial it in. You have to learn to develop the shooting stroke without a give-me. The reward of dropping the threeball is real. I am very excited for the future of sports in VR.

Thought I would give it a try before the kids got to play. 40 min in and having fun. Well worth it. Kids will try tomorrow and hope to update then.
This was a game from the Curator program and I kinda had been putting it off for a long while but I finally decided to check it out. It's not a HORRIBLE game, but honestly it wasn't my kind of fun for the long term in VR. I am not generally a fan of sports or games that sorta act like sports. This is a game that's sorta like a free throw basket shooting contest with a twist: You have to make it past a giant rock golem creature thing that will jump and wave his arms any time you shoot. So the game progresses like this: first you are given a ball and you make a free throw shot in the basket. Wow! You managed that so now let's open a bunch of other spots on the court and make you sink baskets from each of those spots. COOL! You managed that... now we'll put in your opponent. All you have to do is move to a spot before the big guy reacts and make a basket before he can get situated to block you. NICE, you did that? Well now we'll add some kind of cloud that randomly floats around and apparently freezes the basketball so it shatters instead of going through the hoop (though sometimes it still goes through the hoop). This is how the game seems to progress every time from here on out. Make a shot from each spot on the court (Making the yellow glow disappear around that spot) and when all are gone, you start over with some new obstacle to worry about. Eventually the golem will retaliate for your baskets with some kind of ice spike spell that can actually kill you. At this point in the game, I kinda lost interest. It went from not very fun, to mildly annoying to complete, to a total bother to complete, to "Holy crap what am I wasting my time on? I could be doing anything and having more fun". Also an issue for me is the movement system. I'm not granted the ability to move at will, and instead I have to do this special move to open a portal to the spot adjacent to my location to sorta do a teleport hop 5 feet to the left or right. It's basically two controls you have to remember: Squeeze grips to force grab the ball toward you, squeeze the trigger to open the portal and then you have to kinda flick your wrist through the portal to teleport there. The rest is just shooting baskets over and over. But again, it's not a horrible game and maybe some people will appreciate the challenge. For me it was about 10 minutes of mild fun and then I was just thinking of playing Bonelab or something else. I don't know how many levels the developer put into this and maybe it gets really hectic, but there's really only so much fun you can have with making baskets while someone else tries to block your shot. If they did some other kind of challenge in between levels, or otherwise broke the monotony it might have been better.
The game received from ViveVR groups curator program see bottom of the review to join. Video Review: https://youtu.be/JHQGP72nWVM?t=96 A different take on shooting hoops with a Greek God-like feel to it. Shoot the firey balls into the hoop from several different positions. Once you have got the hoop in from a position it darkens to let you know you have completed this position. Once all positions are done you move to the next level. I had trouble getting the ball back at times with the tractor beam tool that you use to return the ball after a shot. The giant gorilla type golf defence was good after a few levels but that rain cloud that broke the balls was annoying but upped the challenge. graphically was very good and the voice work is good making it a small studio game instead of a bedroom dev effort. Overall it's a good game if you want to shoot hoops in VR and are after something a little different. Price is fine as polish has gone into the game. Ran fine with no hassles on my nearing outdated system. The game is short and sweet... You play a game of "HORSE" by making one shot from each of the 5 spots, you gravity pull balls that are laying around or that are thrown at you from towers at the edge of the map... You do this while a BIG "GOLEM" tries to block your shots with his body, and some environmental magical elements they use. The ball physics where pretty good, didnt felt like it was helping you too much or too little. There are 3 bosses, and 1 court (at the time when i played), so not much content, The game can be finished in ~30 min, but its also priced accordingly. Overall, Its a fun family friendly casual basketball game of horse.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. You can view my gameplay & initial impressions review here: https://youtu.be/9pwTeigCpeI This is a fun, arcade basketball game with a twist challenge: you have essentially a giant (Tacko Fall in disguise?) blocking your path and trying to destroy you at times while you're out there just trying to shoot some hoops. You have to be quick on your release and also on your feet (or teleport button in this case). There is nodal teleportation only. You teleport from one of 5 spots around the basket (looks like old school 3 point line). You're playing the most fiendishly evil game of horse; make the shots or die trying. The basketball physics, while not realistic, feels very good as shots are challenging enough to make while not being too easy. Plus with the difficulty of the giant trying to block your shot or kill you, and all the things he can summon like a rain cloud or swirling debris, it can be quite the challenge. I haven't beaten the game. I believe I got up to the last boss (mechanical giant) in the last phase of the fight. He basically summons this fire / electric charge blast that covers up a huge portion of the available nodal teleport locations that you can escape to. I found it difficult to guess where he was going to blast and how to get out of the area fast enough. However, apparently, according to another review, you can beat this game in 30 minutes. I would say it will take most people a lot longer than that. The visuals & sounds aren't the best. It seems there isn't a lot of content either (if reports are accurate). However, the gameplay is very solid. Rate 6.5/10. This may be a little over-priced for what it is. However, it is more fun than the vast majority of VR basketball games.
Daumen hoch!
All you need to know about Hooplord: 1. Epic boss battles with elementals that will pack the stuffing out of you. 2. Best basketball feel of any VR game to date. If either interest you, this is the game for you!
Fun little game. Great music (especially fire guard's theme) and quite a bit of high difficulty on the second stage of the rock guard. Loved the overall aesthetic of the game.
