It's so much easier after the update, but we still need to be careful with ammo - it's very easy to waste it. Anyway, after many failures, I finished that game with pleasure. I love that Christmas vibe :D
best game ive ever played i nut every time

Alright. “Home Defender.” First off, don’t buy this game at full price. Just don’t. It’s not worth it, even when it’s a dollar. However, for a game that feels like a Unity asset flip, it’s… okay? I wouldn’t call it good, but it’s not terrible either. If you don’t know, you play as a weird-looking model of Kevin McCallister, who speaks with a text-to-speech voice and can die from a sneeze. Your goal is to defend your house, as the Wet Bandits are coming to invade in about ten minutes. Using traps scattered around the house and your government-issued water gun (which has ridiculously little ammo), you have to survive the night, outlast the bandits, call the police, and sleep peacefully. Simple, right? Just grab some toys, a bowling ball, and hey! Maybe even do a few side quests when you get the chance. Yeah… easier said than done. This game is difficult. Not “Soulslike” difficult, but man, it’s tough. Your items barely do anything, and since you have to take down two guys with what little you have, you’re in for a wild ride. And when I say “difficult,” I don’t mean the bandits one-shot you or have hitboxes the size of mountains (though, close). The game is just borderline impossible because of the ammo situation. That tiny water gun? Only about 200 shots — and it’s full-auto. I’ve only seen one Let’s Play on YouTube where someone actually managed to beat it legit. Yeah… not fun. That said, the game is pretty goofy. It’s one of those “so bad it’s good” experiences. What do you expect? Play it with some friends, let them watch, and just laugh. There are even some side quests you can do, like in the attic, if you kill a bird, a demon girl appears, and if you defeat her, you can go to the treehouse and get the slingshot. Weird, right? Definitely not in the movie. So, is Home Defender worth your money? HELL NO. But is it a silly game that belongs on itch.io? HELL YES.

I really wanted to try this game but it's impossible to run properly. Totally unplayable, will refund it.
Even though this game is a huge homage to the Home Alone movies, which are one of my favorite series of movies to watch around Christmas (AT LEAST THE FIRST TWO), the novelty of this game being a Home Alone game wears off fast. Oh, sorry, did I say fast? I mean it wears off NINE MINUTES IN. Yup, despite being the main threats of the game, the burglars do not show up for a good nine minutes after you start playing. While it gives you plenty of time to prepare for their arrival, you won't want to play that long when you first try the gameplay. G A M E P L A Y: You walk around Temu Kevin's house, picking up whatever crap you may come across to use as traps. Although these include what you see in the movie, such as paint cans and ornaments, you will also see a whole new set of armaments, including bowling balls, tasers in puddles of water, and boiling hot pots of soup, which continue to be boiling hot, even after being taken off of the stove. But instead of using these to set up a home defense system born from Rube Goldberg's wet dream, you just place these objects on the ground, and pray to god the AI is stupid enough to step on them. Yup, you don't get to drop red hot irons on Dollar General Marv's head, but you get to watch him walk into it. You don't even get to set up a toolbox going down the stairs, minus one point for denying me that. In addition to the burglars, you have a boss fight in both the attic and the basement. In the basement, you go off against a boiler, which is in tune with what happens in the movie. What isn't in tune though, is you fighting against a GHOST IN THE ATTIC. At what point in the movie did Kevin have to defeat that girl from The Ring, by spraying them with a squirt gun? The gameplay gets a 1/10. G R A P H I C S: I don't even have to talk about the graphics, because just glancing at the game's Steam preview images can give you the impression whoever shat this game into existance just went onto the Unity asset store and used a series of free to use models. Now, I don't know if that is the case, but from the looks of the game, I would not be surprised if I predicted that was how they made the game. Everything looks ugly, even on the highest graphic setting. I can guarantee you that if you plucked out your corneas with a garden rake, you would have an equal experience to looking at this game. I give the graphics a 1/10. C A M E R A: You will not have control of your camera while playing. Yes, even though the game instructs you to move your mouse to control it, it feels like tugging on a rabid Doberman's leash as it attempts to tear off the head of a poor, defenseless rabbit. You will find it nearly impossible to get the camera looking where you want it to, which makes aiming your gun terrible. Just like everything else, 1/10. C O N T R O L S: Now with everything else I have given a 1/10, you would expect the game to control good at least, but it does NOT. The pause button is not the escape key, or P, but it is mapped to the i key, or your inventory key. That makes absolutely zero sense. The one good thing I can say about this game's controls is you have the ability to lock onto enemies by hitting the TAB key. This sounds good in practice, as you could theoretically lock onto an enemy, and fire at them with your weapon. But this is a lesson in trust, which you will have failed, as if you try and lock onto an enemy with a weapon in your hand, you will be UNABLE TO LOCK ON. Do you have any idea how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid this feature is? Why would we want to lock onto an enemy, except to steady our aim on them? Even if we could have locked onto the enemies, these controls, just like the rest of the game, get a flat 1/10. F I N A L T O T A L S: Gameplay: 1/10 Graphics: 1/10 Camera: 1/10 Controls: 1/10 Total: 4/40 Final Score: 1/10 I did not enjoy Home Defender, and I am grateful that Steam is allowing me to get this refund. But what baffles me the most is that this game is selling for a base price of 5.99, when clearly, if you paid even anything for the chance to play this game, you would be better off paying for someone to kick your trophy case with a pair of steel toed boots.
