Am Anfang denkst du nur: "Du bist eine Schande für Haithabu. Du hast deinen Jarl dem Feind in die Arme geworfen. Was sollen Ragnar und Hilda von dir denken?"

Such an amazing game with many variants

I got this one on my phone when the game was at it's 1.0 days. It has really improved over the years.
If you are looking to learn how to play Hnefatafl and/or need opponents to test out your Hnefatafl strategies, this is your game.
I recently discovered the game of Hnefatafl, ancient as it is. I always enjoyed must-jump checkers for the forced-move nature of the game, but chess was always a little too much for me. At some point that game becomes learning openings, elaborate movesets, etc. Hnefatafl sits happily in between the two. Meatier than a game of checkers, but not the headache or reading assignment that chess can be. I find it interesting that a number of the many variations of the game stem from the fact that the game is so old and there were no shortage of misinterpreted passages describing it in diaries, etc. For those curious, Copenhagen rules are the ones you should probably start with. Not saying they're the best, but they're the most modern, and a revision of other modern rules, with some concessions to make draws less common. Enough about the game itself though, how is this app? It costs money, so it needs a review! Well, the app is well made. The AI is smart enough to help you get a feel for the game. The multiplayer is cross platform, which is nice as I also have this game on my android, and is available on iphone too. Oh and it supports asynchronous play. The app won't have you dropping your jaw at ray-traced pieces or anything like that, but there's room for customizing thanks to workshop content, plus the app is responsive, easy to navigate, easy to read, and easy to use. I'd give it a 9/10 and a hearty reccomendation to strategy fans, history buffs, chess/checkers fans, etc. When you've got the hang of copenhagen, I reccomend trying Tyr and Seabattle modes. Different rules, different layouts, and different pieces in Tyr's case. Both are interesting variations that will take your strategies and knowledge from Copenhagen and turn it on it's ear :)
A really flexible and feature-rich implementation of the board game. The different variants are clearly presented and easy to pick up. The selection of bots is pretty decent. Well worth the asking price.
