Hitbox was an attempt at making a PvP only minimalist/low poly competitor to CS:GO. It was a paid product featuring laughably poor Red vs Blue low poly stick figure things instead of detailed PC visuals. Originally a paid product, the developers made it free, and even then it failed to attract any players. It failed. SteamDB shows the game peaked at just 56 players (when they made it "free"), which is a pitiful number, and now the game has practically no players, with numbers around 2-3 per day at most (and even then it's unclear why they log on, there's no servers!). Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! Very poor technical implementation seems to be the primary cause of death here. While you can tweak resolution and controls, the visuals are some of the worst I've seen in a 3D game. Not even phoned in, I suspect the developers just sent a telegram via morse code or something. PvP gamers have literally thousands of games to choose from, hundreds of AAA games that are either free or cost next to nothing. Games have to actually offer something if they want to compete for players time. The developers made the fatal, lazy mistake of believing that PvP, other players, would be an acceptable substitute for doing the difficult job of adding single player level design, storytelling, NPCs and other rich aspects of designed game content to the game. As a result of this choice by the developers, the game has little to no actual interactive game content. It's a little considered fact that the vast majority of PvP only, multiplayer only games fail. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable subsititue for doing the job of game developers and building a game filled with content. PvP only games must have a huge player base for them to "go viral" and succeed. But with no single player experience to add lasting value to a game, the developers instead chose to bet against all odds that their game would "go viral" without any actual reason for players to want to play the game. Predictably, they lost this bet.

I had this on my wishlist for a long length of time, never got around to buying it but was always interested. The game then went free to play and I downloaded it and played maybe a match or two, seemed really cool but my matches were against bots so maybe not the experience to review the game on as most people would expect but simply put I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to people interested for sure, I don't know whether there's a means of hosting private lobbies as I never looked into that aspect but if it is there then I would for one be suggesting that to friends and having it kept installed to play with friends online alone.

So, I used to love the ps3's Uncharted 3 multiplayer. This game has strong foundations, game design wise, and I can only thank the developers for helping me scratch the itch for this kind of game. S2 All the love to the developers!
