Jun Mizushima, is ordinary in every way, except for the fact that he’s the only son of a wealthy businessman and that dabbles in video game development in his spare time. He also has an ability to make everything he wishes a reality. Or, so he thinks.

An utterly absurd premise, hiding a surprisingly deep story. Don't judge a book by its cover, I guess?
Hmm... This is a good first effort on the part of the developers. Decent characterization, backgrounds, and graphics. There is room for improvement, but again, for a first effort, pretty good. Perhaps the most glaring omission is a gallery. Decent enough, though waiting for a discount is not discouraged.
His Chuunibyou Cannot Be Cured! is a story-focused visual novel that blends romantic comedy, coming-of-age drama, and light psychological introspection into a narrative that is both playful and quietly reflective. Developed by Tamaya Kagiya and published by MangaGamer, the game embraces the familiar trappings of anime-inspired slice-of-life storytelling while using its central theme—chuunibyou, or adolescent delusions of grandeur—as a lens through which to examine identity, ambition, and emotional vulnerability. Rather than treating its premise as a simple gag, the game steadily builds it into something more personal and grounded. The story follows Jun Mizushima, a high school student who outwardly appears well-adjusted but privately harbors an intense inner world shaped by imagination, self-importance, and the belief that his desires can shape reality. Jun is not portrayed as a caricature; instead, his chuunibyou tendencies are framed as a coping mechanism and a source of motivation, particularly as he juggles academic pressures, creative aspirations, and the expectations placed on him by his wealthy family background. This duality—confidence bordering on delusion paired with genuine insecurity—forms the emotional backbone of the narrative and gives Jun a surprising amount of depth for a genre protagonist. Progression is driven almost entirely by reading and choice-making, adhering closely to traditional visual novel design. Player decisions influence how Jun interacts with the people around him, shaping relationship routes and emotional outcomes rather than radically altering the overarching plot. Choices often feel subtle rather than dramatic, focusing on tone, honesty, and emotional openness instead of binary “right or wrong” options. This design reinforces the game’s emphasis on interpersonal nuance, encouraging players to think about how small decisions affect trust, affection, and self-understanding over time. Character writing is one of the game’s strongest elements. The supporting cast is made up of classmates, rivals, and potential romantic interests who initially appear to fit recognizable archetypes but gradually reveal more layered personalities. Conversations unfold naturally, balancing humor with moments of quiet sincerity, and the game takes time to explore how each character reacts to Jun’s worldview. Rather than existing solely to affirm or challenge the protagonist, these characters feel like individuals with their own motivations, insecurities, and emotional boundaries. Visually, the game adopts a clean, expressive anime art style that prioritizes character emotion. Sprite work is detailed and varied enough to convey shifts in mood, embarrassment, confidence, and vulnerability without relying on excessive text. Backgrounds provide a consistent sense of place—classrooms, streets, and everyday settings that reinforce the slice-of-life tone—while CG illustrations are used sparingly to punctuate important emotional or romantic moments. The presentation doesn’t aim for spectacle, but it effectively supports the story’s intimate focus. Audio design complements this approach with a restrained soundtrack that underscores scenes without overwhelming them. Music choices are generally light and reflective, shifting subtly during moments of tension or emotional realization. Sound effects are minimal, keeping attention firmly on dialogue and character interaction. This understated audio direction helps maintain immersion and keeps the pacing smooth, especially during longer reading sessions. The game’s handling of mature themes is measured rather than gratuitous. While it does include adult content, these elements are integrated into relationship development rather than serving as the sole focus. Romantic and intimate moments are framed as extensions of emotional closeness, reinforcing the game’s broader themes of connection and self-acceptance. This approach helps the narrative maintain coherence and emotional credibility, even when venturing into more explicit territory. Pacing may feel slow to players accustomed to heavily branching visual novels or constant dramatic escalation. His Chuunibyou Cannot Be Cured! is content to linger in everyday moments, allowing relationships and internal conflicts to evolve gradually. For some, this deliberate rhythm enhances immersion and realism; for others, it may feel overly restrained. The experience is clearly designed for readers who value character introspection and emotional buildup over shock or spectacle. Overall, His Chuunibyou Cannot Be Cured! stands as a thoughtful, character-driven visual novel that treats its humorous premise with sincerity and care. It succeeds by focusing on emotional authenticity, relatable insecurity, and the quiet process of growing up rather than by chasing complex mechanics or extreme narrative twists. For players who enjoy anime-style storytelling rooted in personal growth, romance, and self-reflection, it offers a warm and introspective experience that lingers not because of grand events, but because of the human emotions at its core. Rating: 7/10
