About
Step into a world of romance and flowers in this refreshingly mature otome that charts the lives of four couples, centered around a local flower shop.
‘Him, the Smile & bloom’ is a unique exploration of the flourishing relationship between two adults and the highs and lows of their budding romance in a modern world.
From the initial spark of attraction to the struggles of maintaining a relationship and navigating life’s choppy waters - Him, the Smile & bloom, deftly weaves heart-warming - and heart-breaking - narrative threads for a genuinely distinct and memorable otome experience!

Him, the Smile & bloom charts four whirlwind romances - from the tender love of youth, to thorny, tumultuous and steamy. There are four distinct love matches to explore.

Rather than one protagonist with a selection of love interests, Him, the Smile & bloom instead focuses on the relationship between four couples and love interests - Wataru, Ginnosuke, Hokuto, and Tenya.

Each couple has three endings to explore. However! Rather than traditional ‘good’ or ‘bad’ endings, each of the couple’s potential futures are poignant and offer something worthwhile to enjoy, regardless of the romantic (or not!) outcome.
By focusing on the growing relationship between four couples. Him, the Smile & bloom brings a unique maturity to the exploration of love and the lives of these couples.

Wonderful character artwork and vibrant and detailed game world, combined with expressive voice work to really enhance the tenderness and emotion of each story. The Western release also includes an updated and re-edited story script!

Completing the ‘Glow’ or ‘best’ ending to each couples’ story unlocks additional side stories to enjoy - bringing further life to these unforgettable characters.

HanaKare or Him, the Smile and Bloom(?!) is an otome distribued on PC by PQube, so if you have followed a few PQube games...you know what to expect lol. Genso Manege, Celestia, Busafellows... Sometimes some hard hitting moments, other times just goofy ♥♥♥♥ and varying quality in storytelling. Though, they don't shy away from mature topics, which is what I like most about them. HanaKare is an atypical romance game in that it centres around 4 different couples who start the game not in a relationship and through the game, either end up broken up or in one together. The whole point is seeing the development of their like to love and what the future holds for them. The protagonists all work with or at the Fill Flower florist chain and meet through that. Why a florist needs 4+ employees on the clock when they have zero customers for 90% of the day is beyond me, but suspend your disbelief. The game consists of a short intro and then you select the MMC from the menu and continue through around 15 chapters of story to either the Glow (good), Bloom (normal) or Wither (bad) endings. There's no real route order, just pick a fella and go for it. I was really interested in playing this game because I though the structure sounded really unique and I liked the artist who contributed to the game. There was a wide variety of CGs and they were quite pretty and multi-panelled which was really appreciated. I think it helps contribute to the intimacy of some late-game scenes as well as develop the comedy and joy in some of the scenarios. The sprites have multiple outfits and faces, and I think they blink too, which is awesome. There were a couple scenes, though, where the outfit transitions didn't really match but I think it was great otherwise. The voice acting is top notch and crystal clear, I found myself more often than not just sitting and listening to the lines. Espeically Rei's. It's absolutely criminal that he does not get a DLC romance or anything. I can't sit by and let him be the smoking hot older man just teasing the FMC. Unreal. Just wow. The game is voiced by some stellar voice talent. It also gets a little steamy so expect to hear some sounds. The music is alright, it's your general upbeat slice-of-life sound and is pretty forgettable but it is also very clear and high quality. The game has decent QoL in the menu but my main struggle was that the toggle for ALL SKIP and SKIP was the Shift key so I would find myself accidentally hitting it and hitting CTRL and then skipping all the dialogue. You can open the save menu by right clicking, or hit Menu to open the sliding menu which includes the Flower Glossary. When playing windowed, if you click into the game, it will open the menu unless you click on the titlebar. You can't rewind lines though so you need to be sure to save. The story is your every day slice of life. I was looking for something more grounded so I found this game really refreshing, but it is so trope heavy. My personal route ranking is
Tweedia (Wataru) > Mimosa (Gin) = Nandina (Tenya) > Anemone (Hokuto)
and my Love Interest ranking is
Tenya = Gin > Wataru > Hokuto
. Hokuto:
I fully struggled with his bad ending and some of the choices in his route - in soe of the other routes the younger characters don't live with their family, but Hokuto is in his late 20s and still does; with the age gap between the two characters, I was hoping to see more "adult lifestyle" choices for Hokuto to allow them to really grow as a couple.
I chose him as my first route because childhood friends-to-lovers is my favourite trope but the route really let me down. Tenya:
My main issue with Tenya's route was his heroine. The miscommunication trope rears its ugly head in this route. The bad ending breakup was so bad, especially after the mid-route scene where Miku uses Rei to separate herself from Tenya. It was so childish and I experienced second-hand embarrassment. The inability at times for this MC to speak at all but instead have an internal monologue really ♥♥♥♥ me to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tears.
Ginnosuke:
Right off the back of one misunderstanding to another. Ginnosuke is the perfect flirt/prince type and eventually in the good ending becomes the reformed playboy, but he's paired with the most misunderstanding-est, miscommunication-est FMC. I tried to forgive because a lot of them are in their early 20s, but in one scene she completely talks over Gin while he tries to explain his history with another character and she writes her own narrative for his story and then RUNS OFF.
This is what people mean when they say they crashed out. Wataru:
Whilst personally not my type, I found I really enjoyed this route - even with the age gap which they thankfully do not continue to highlight. Wataru starts at 19 and MC at 26 (she states that she's one year younger than Hokuto and Kozue). The communication was great and I liked the way that Wataru complimented his FMC and worked hard to impress her. I felt it was a good depiction of like the younger guy trying to draw the attention of the older woman, and she, mostly, did not infantlise him. I dislike the genki character type when they are too likened to dogs/puppies and the head pats really grate on me. I personally found myself really enraptured by the epilogue and the bad ending really moved me, but I would've liked to see the FMC take the job transfer and let Wataru find his own way to just make the time spent together as a couple sweeter. This route also took place over several years which I really liked.
I generally am not one to like proposal endings, but I think this game could've done with some. Whilst this isn't the best game I've ever played, the combination of high quality voice acting, a decent English translation post localisation (minus Wataru's route, which has the most typos) and visually interesting art/CGs make this a game worth buying (on sale) and on PC.
I'd been eyeing this VN long enough, so now, after completing all the routes (except for Specials), it's actually hard to believe everything passed that quickly There is no kind of twist or dark undertone, all the stories are pretty lightweight, but some maturity and seriousness are still present, and I really enjoyed this vibe a lot. Sweet, but not too sugary - that'd be how I describe it, so, paired with a need in something relaxing, this really hit the spot for me All four stories were nice in their own way, some moments were definitely surprising coming from certain characters, where all I could do was squeal in a pillow and not wake the neighbours up (yes, Tenya Minami, looking at you) - yeah, that's a seal of approval for sure- The only moment that threw me off a bit was the translation - not that it was bad, but some phrases were put quite awkwardly. Hopefully, some improvements are going to be released to it, because I'd happily reread the stories anew then So, do I recommend it? Yes, surely. Would I recommend it to everyone? Well, yes and no. I'd say that it's perfect for a certain mood, and gladly spread a word about it, but, in the end, it may be not everyone's cup of tea. But if you eye it, like I did once, you should give it a chance and try it out :).
Long story. Very good characterisation. Classic Game.
VERY VERY GOODDDDDDD I LOVE THIS
This was my first otome game and I LOVED it all the ends. Without fail I got the glow end every time so watching the wither ends were heartbreaking. Especially Tenya and Wataru's withering end. My fave route was Tenya, I fell in love with this route hard! Least enjoyable route would be Gin's, but it was still fun to play as the story progressed. Overall 8/10 would recommend to any beginner and flower fan. The graphics were amazing! Would love anyone who has recs for other otome games simular to this. I am just starting. :)
TLDR; recommended for beginner otome fans
cute game with 4 different mcs with their own respective love interests! this game has a fairly unique storyline as instead of one heroine, theres 4 separate ones with their own LI's. I wasn't sure how it would go but it allowed for more unique dynamics between characters! as of writing, ive completed 1 route and looked went through a few others, so length is quite nice.
pros

amazing art + cg's
stacked VA lineup MAKOTO FURUKAWA!
unique setup
very romantic!
lengthy game

cons

3/4 MC's felt like the same character
some LI's were.. frustrating.
overall worth the spend if you have it and you enjoy otomes!
so sweet i got hyperglycemia
