I really wanted to like this game. But it took several updates just to get basic quality of life updates like a compass pointing the way to the exit. I like supporting small Australian Indie devs and the game had a lot of potential. But it just isn't fun to play. You don't feel like a stealthy genius when you succeed. You only feel frustration when your gadget fails to distract the guards correctly. Guards walking often get stuck on environment / other guards after a chase. Camera is often very restrictive and results in you being spotted many times by guards you couldn't see due to a poor angle. Also aiming gadgets and camera are both bound to the mouse, so you can't move the camera while aiming a gadget. On the positive side the maps often have multiple approaches / routes to take. It rewards exploration.
never heard about this game until it popped into my recommended an hour ago so iv not been following this at all. you can easily duke many of the guards by sprinting past and effectively just rushing the level, they lose sight of you if you turn a corner or go through a door pretty much. other than that the core gameplay loop seemed ok but very basic and i had no motivation to really unlock the other items, although i think it could be quite fun if there was more complexity. i wouldnt mind the simplicity if there was more commitment to the aesthetic (past the heavy shadows, jazz and trench coats theres nothing much compelling here). im under the impression this is maybe one guy or a couple of guys but i really hope, give it 2 to 5 years, that they revisit this type of thing and try again, with voice actors, narrative and maybe some cutscenes.
Decent art style, limited gameplay. You are limited to 3 types of gadgets, all of which have limited numbers that can't be recovered. Most of the gadgets are distraction variations, and the starting set is very weak. Coins have a tiny radius and should not be limited uses. There is only so far you can get with clever stealth, and some areas will stack guards in bright areas in front of the only door available to progress. You have no way to control light, no way to take down guards early on, and no free distractions. Imagine if Metal Gear Solid limited how many times you could knock on walls. I'm sorry, but absolutely not. I know the goal is pure stealth, but the levels are not designed for clean runs with no detection.
This is a great stealth puzzle game. The art, the sounds and the music all give the game a great mood. There are so many ways to do better in each level giving you excellent replayability. The multiple paths through a level combined with checkpoints mean that you can always crawl your way through a more difficult level to get to the finish, but that leaves you room to come back and find a new way to get through the level even faster. HEIST is easily in my top 10 favourite indie games of all time.
I'm loving how this game feels. It's refreshing to play a stealth game that requires careful movement and item use in the way HEIST does it. It seems like there are several ways to complete a heist, and it is up to you as to how you do it. I'm only a few levels deep at the moment so I can't wait to unlock more.
For 3 first mission, I have some questions: First, in stealth game, I think we should have a plan But the camera is lock and we don't have a map (in detail, a map should have enemies's position, but we don't have a basic map ) so I have no idea what waits for me in next room maybe because of performance (or optimizer memory) a part of map - a room (the map is splitted into many room) is shown in one moment. And I can not get full info about map before playing. in addition, shall we have "view cone" for enemies, because I don't know when i am invisible or not (I mean when i go in the light area, sometime, nobody see me, so I think a view cone will make stealth easier, right ?) sometimes, it's too dark to see anything clearly, I know, this game is about heist, maybe i am too old for a heist, huhu :'( btw, this is good game (not great but good !! I am a dev, too. And I hate tester, too. And I said like a tester. But I love the gameplay of this game and i have a lot of things to say) for a long time, very long time, I have not seen any game like this, maybe since Clod Zero the last stand. (I know, we don't combat in this game, just stealth, but i love stealth) so thank you for this game :)
Before I begin I want to clarify that I received a free code for the game from the developers for helping out with beta testing. I haven't put a lot of time into the game as of writing, but I wanted to write down at least my initial thoughts and may update this review when I have played more of the game. HEIST is a stealth action game with a bit of a puzzle element to it with how you have to find ways to sneak past guards, discover the map layout and find your objective. It's developed in my home town in Melbourne, Australia and I always love to help support local devs and have been looking forward to this game for a while since I first tried it at PAX AUS 2017. It's not perfect, with a few bugs still here and there, but I find it really charming and the aesthetic is great. It's pretty clear that Atomizer gathered inspiration from other games such as LA Noire and Yahtzee Croshaw's The Art of Theft in its design. For example , you can tell the voices of the guards are just the devs putting on a fake american accent but I kinda like it, as it adds to that charm of a small game from a new indie developer. It would be nice if there was more of a storyline to follow, and besides unlocking a new item after completing a level there isn't a lot in terms of upgradability when it comes to the character, which means less replay value for a game that already looks rather short. Overall, HEIST is underrated and overlooked in my opinion; you can barely find it on steam's search function without going out of the way to find it.
