I consider Serial Cleaners to be a side-grade to the original game. I generally liked the unique character mechanics (sans Bob's blood slide) once I got used to them, and the cleaning mechanics felt good overall. On the other hand, the stealth mechanics felt distinctly worse, particularly in regard to the cops. Making bodies heavier (compared to the first game) was a good change as it made moving them feel like more of a risk, and the introduction of limbs and throwing big evidence was a change I liked, as it helps add variety to the gameplay loop and acts as a tool to distract cops. Cleaning blood also feels alot more forgiving than the first game, as I find myself leaving fewer tiny droplets, and the highlight when cleaning and in cleaner vision makes it alot easier to get stuff hidden by the isometric level layouts. Psychos chainsaw was probably my favorite character mechanic due to its neat interactions with the cops and environment, but the hacking skill from viper and parkour skills from Lati were also really good. Bobs blood slide was just rarely helpful, but it wasn't really an issue. The story was staggeringly meh. Lati was the only one with any meaningful change, Bob was very bland, Psycho had a moment of character with his girlfriend but was just "crazy dude with a chainsaw" the rest of the time, and Viper was ... irritating on a good day. There are apparently multiple ending, but I never felt like I had anywhere where I could have meaningfully changed something. My biggest issue with this game is the removal of the vision cones from the first game, closely followed by the gun-cops. With a lack of vision cones, guards ability to see me often felt random. Sometimes I could sprint in the open and they would completely miss me, other times I could be barely sticking out from a corner 3 rooms away and they would see me. While the checkpoints every time I cleaned an non-blood objective made these much more minor issues than if they had happened in the first game, it just made every level so much more tedious. The gun cops exaggerate this issue a dozen times over; where if a normal cop was to see me, I had a chance to run away and use either my skills or evasion tools in the environment, gun cops immediately open fire and basically guarantee that I will have to reload from my last checkpoint. Overall, there I definitely something missing from this game; something was lost from the transition of the stylized graphics of the first game to the generic pseudo-realistic style present here. I can't really put my finger on whats different, but its not enough to change that I did generally enjoy playing this game. It took me 8 hours to beat the game and I 100% the base game at the same time. You are required to buy the DLC if you want to actually 100% this game.
Decent game, however it is seem to be just of the mark. Buy it on sale The voice acting and dialog is stiff. The story doesn't really catch on The gameplay is fun but repetetive
Too easy to attract police attention, and the gameplay often boils down to the same routine: getting spotted by a cop way outside your line of sight, running in circles to break line of sight, hiding in a corner until the alert level drops—then repeating the same cycle.
Good story setting. Worst gaming mechanism ever. Run. Run fast. As fast as you can. Such a heart-breaking game. Getting depression because of it.
TL;DR Serial Cleaners was definitely an interesting experience. Overall, I would say that the game was a net positive and was worth playing - even though it has some problems. I will not be purchasing the DLC, though. Pros 1. The game mechanics were really fun to learn and play with. 2. I enjoyed the middle and later levels a lot because they allow for different strategies and experiment with verticality. 3. Sometimes you have to switch between two cleaners to complete a level and they have specialized capabilities which allows you to approach the same areas in different ways. 4. The outline of the story was entertaining and made you want to learn more about each character. 5. There were different situations (no spoilers) for each level and they were always refreshing in my opinion. 6. I thought that the jittery and subliminal visuals were really well done. This is subjective, though. Others may find this annoying. 7. The additions of checkpoints and opportunities to get out of rough situations made completing this game tolerable. Sometimes cleaning scenes with a high level of stealth would take at least an hour. If progress was reset every time you get busted, I would have most likely quit. Cons 1. The earlier levels (the first five) were really annoying to complete as a first-time player. Most of them were really small or had limited strategy. 2. Levels that were active crime scenes subverted my expectations and were my least favorite in terms of believability. If blood, evidence, and/or bodies are tampered with during a real investigation, law enforcement wouldn't just forget about it after 30-60 seconds and continue on with their patrol pattern. Once I stopped thinking/caring about crime scene procedures, the game was much more enjoyable. 3. I didn't like the writing for most of the story. Characters feel like caricatures of what they should have been. Bob seemed like the only convincing person to me. For example, Vip3r was my favorite character to play, but had the most annoying dialogue in the entire group. 4. Some hiding spots are either bugged or hard to use. 5. The action button on the controller sometimes had me open/close doors or pickup bodies if two interactive objects were too close together. There's more I could write, but I will leave it at that. I would rate my experience with the game a 7/10.
If you liked the chaotic whimsy of the first game, and thrived in the controlled mayhem that you constantly found yourself in, prepare to be heavily disappointed: Serial Cleaners is nothing like that! Instead of one character, you now have four at your disposal. However, you don't actually have a choice, as characters are tied to specific missions. There are a few (three or so) missions, where you can actually switch between two of the four characters, but that switching is optional, and may not be necessary, depending on your playstyle. What is worse is that there an extreme focus on the back story of the characters, which is generic, not particularly well told, and most annoyingly part of the mission - whenever you restart a mission, you need to wait through the story over and over, which takes a while, even if you are skipping as quickly as possible. For some reason the perspective was turned to isometric. However, the levels are designed in such a way that there are constantly small areas, which you cannot actually see. While this may sound like a nice challenge regarding finding the last stains to clean, it is usually just annoying, because more likely than not there is some obstacle in those areas, which you can't easily pass, without seeing why that is the case. Had there been a rotation option, things may have been less of a nuisance. One of the most infuriating things in the game is the object recognition. To interact with objects, you need to stand close enough to them. More often than not there are at least two objects in such a proximity to each other that it requires pixel-perfect positioning to actually get the one or the other. To add insult to injury, the focus may switch mid-click, so that instead of "hide" you click on "make noise and alert everyone". Again, this could have been solved with an explicit cycle-through option, but no such luck. While the game itself is somewhat monotonous, and not very interesting, the Dino Park DLC decides to mix up things in the worst possible way - it brings speed-runs into the mix! What on earth is the purpose of speedruns in a game, which punishes carelessness, and rewards stealth and good planning? Yes, it results in a significantly longer time spent in the DLC, but given that it is not particularly fun, that is not really a benefit. Overall, it seems like there were many good ideas, but no time or resources to polish the outcome.
Nice art style, looks damn good. Overall pretty nice and atmospheric, but still runs well even on low end machines.
Cleaning made fun. Like this game
