A very enjoyable FMV game. Don't expect something Oscar worthy, but it's a good indie horror with very good cinematography (and I love the forest setting). I appreciated a lot that you can skip old scenes on subsequent playthroughs and that you can look at the story tree in any moment to help you reach alternative routes and endings.
Despite the many inconsistencies and dialogue that isn’t always engaging, the storyline is full of intrigue and unexpected twists. And you directly influence these twists through your choices. That’s what makes it so compelling. It makes your experience truly immersive. A minor spoiler: the Black Forest isn’t really that black, compared to what’s going on in the protagonists’ minds. It can sometimes feel like an Indian movie, even though it’s based on German folklore :D

It was so much fun to react and have chat interact with the choices. I really liked creating a variation of a spooky movie. 🫶🏾👏🏾👏🏾
♥ Cool movie game ♥ Slow paced ♥ Replayable cuz of the actions tree! ♥ I would love to be acting in one of this kind of game!
Went into this knowing nothing about Wales Interactive or FMV games in general, and Heart of the Forest turned out to be a weirdly solid first impression. The Black Forest setting does a lot of heavy lifting - fog, gnarled trees, that specifically German flavor of folklore where spirits aren't spooky-ghosts so much as "you wronged something ancient and now it owns you." Half the cast felt genuinely real to me, the other half was clearly reading off cue cards, but switching POVs kept it from getting stale. My choices actually felt like they mattered, which surprised me. Pacing drags hard in the middle act and one ending pissed me off enough that I replayed it twice trying to undo what I'd done. For fifteen bucks I've gotten less out of full-price games this year.
It's not the best, but it's a good way to add some variety to your game library (if the discount is at least 20%) The rest is up to you!
A good FMV game all around. Even if it falls short in a few places, I consider it definitely worth the price and time I've spent on it. It also seems to be the first game of the studio, and I hope they will make more in the future. Good: - Production quality, including acting and sound design. - Beautiful locations - Horror that isn't based on jumpscares - Decision tree is present and (mostly) easy to follow Ok: - Some of the branches weren't obvious to me until I took a much closer look and made some guesses that turned out to be accurate. - Choices and branches could have been more diverse - quite a few sections feel less like making an impactful choice, and more like "what color of the socks does protagonist wear this time". Bad: - The reveal
of the witch
was, to me, not the best choice - it fractured the overall mysterious atmosphere and "I wonder what the heck is going on" vibes I got during the first playthrough, and I think the game would be better if it would leave more of the questions unanswered. It would also help with replayability, as more evidence and information could have been sprinkled around the diverging branches, so that one would have to visit them all for more answers.
The actors are great, forest looks beautiful, VFX and bloody bits and black goo stuff are really well done. I think it's a quality product but the whole stretch in the woods when "Tom" is chasing them and they split up and come back together, split up again, scream for whoever is missing, find them, now someone else is missing, scream for that person, get attacked by Tom again, Tom leaves, Walk in the woods and scream for... it's excrutiatingly long. When the actors finally start to get attacked by evil spirits and ♥♥♥♥ it's really really great but the first half not really. I still enjoyed my time, the quality is up there.
