Harvested is an interesting take on the RTS genre. RTS games usually have similar gameplay with overlaying game specific mechanics that make each game different. Harvested is a refreshing take because it combines different genre’s (such as top down shooter/tower defense) base mechanics into the standard RTS mechanics instead of just adding onto the already established RTS base. However, this combination of game types can muddle the gameplay slightly. There are times where the genres meld together well, and other times it feels like one, specifically the top down shooter aspect, dominates the others. The real selling point for me beyond the gameplay itself is the music. The music is a great example of why ambiance is so important in interactive media. The music adds a lot to the feel of each situation and is done so well. Overall, it’s a solid game with real potential. 7/10 with room to improve Pros: Gameplay feels solid for the most part Music and ambiance are on point and add a lot to the game Brings back memories of late 90s/early 2000s era top down shooters Devs are quick to respond to feedback A fresh take on an old genre with great potential Price isn't bad Cons: Buggy and crashes occasionally, but it is early access so it’s not a big deal atm Game mechanics not fully cohesive UI is a bit frustrating Lack of accessibility setting, such as button mapping
Follow our curator for similar games
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35180752-3-point-play/ RTS and topdown shooter mix + pixel life + missions = Feels a bit like The Walking Dead when these mobs rush you and you build a base with walls. Oh, they have guns too, I guess they aren't zombies?!
The game is a great RTS with a great story and tutorial I have not once felt like I was missing something that I was not told about in the tutorial. I have been looking for a game like this for a long time. The base building/resource gathering is done in away that makes it both fun and challenging. I sometimes get flash back to playing Warcraft 2 watching my workers gather wood and gold. Vashta Entertainment is going on my list of Best indie developers to keep an eye on for future games. They have been helpful in there reposes to both my problems and questions I had.
Harvested is in a very early access stage. The core concepts are solid and the execution is there, but it does need significant polish and debugging. The name of the game now is replayability or a story that wows the pants off of people. Currently the game has neither and I would suggest to the developers to go with random seed maps before they invest into creating a wow-like story. Think, would Rimworld be fun if you could only play one map?
How in tarnation is it possible that my PC lags while playing a 2d top down pixel graphic shooter? Is this some bitcoin farming trick or something?
Not for me at this price point, the voice acting can charitably be described as "ok", but it along with the text to speech AI booming out at you every few minutes gets irritating pretty quickly. Second mission I notice a bug where attempting to hire the fourth worker will take the resources and count the timer down, but never add the fourth worker.
Really enjoying this game so far! Can't wait to see where the game goes from here since it's in early access. Definitely worth the buy.
Harvested is a very ambitious and unusual game, being a hybrid of top down shooter, survival/crafting/mining, RTS and tower defense. And there's no reason such a game couldn't not only work, but excel. However, excellence is more than a product of just a unique game concept, it must be paired with the other aspects of game development that are absolutely necessary... high quality visuals, audio, and professional levels of polish, all of which are lacking here, and that's what's lead to this game objectively failing. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, and it's hard to say if this is due to the age of the assets used, if it's a deliberate attempt for the game to look bad/retro on purpose, or if the assets are just, well, terrible looking. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game in 2024, such poor quality 2D graphics in the 3D era just aren't good enough, whether it's a deliberate design fault on behalf of the developer or they just couldn't manage to do any better, this is a compromise gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls and game handling are notably very clunky, sluggish and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Vashta Entertainment has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Harvested has the cash grab price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like "Mirror's Edge", "Yakuza Kiwami" or "Rust". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
