If I have an Oculus headset, do I have to play using SteamVR?
Nope! The game includes a launch option to play using the Oculus SDK which is what I would recommend if you have an Oculus headset.
Why is the game so hard?
I want the game to be difficult but fair. Your first few runs might be rough, but I hope you'll ultimately find the challenge satisfying once you master the game's mechanics.
What do you mean "roguelite"?
Hand Cannon Virtuoso is a roguelite in the sense that it features:
Permadeath: If you die, you need to start climbing from the bottom of the tower.
Out-Of-Run Progression: Even though you have to start from the bottom of the tower after death, you will still unlock rewards that persist across climbs such as new cards you can use during runs.
Procedural Content: Each time you climb, the sequence of encounters you need to fight through will change.
Will this game make me motion sick?
I do my best to prevent motion sickness but the game's locomotion is pretty fast-paced. If you have concerns, I'd suggest trying the game and refunding if it doesn't work for you.

DISCLAIMER I am very close to the developer and have been heavily involved in alpha/beta testing for this game, so I am VERY biased :) That said - as evidenced by playtime I think this game is a lot of fun. My favorite parts are: * Locomotion is pretty unique relative to other VR games I've played. It looks fast paced but actually does not really cause me any issues with motion sickness. I think having to wave your arms around to control your thrusters helps with motion sickness. * The game is more than a tech demo - I find it fun and highly replayable with a lot of cool content to keep me interested. There are tons of weapons, enemies, and tactics to learn * The developer updates the game frequently and they are committed to continuing to do so. * The shooter/deck-builder combo is actually really interesting and opens a lot of fun strategies you can work through to build your strength during individual runs. Main caveats/potential cons: * Roguelites/challenging gameplay might not be for everyone, so if you get easily frustrated with the genre/level of difficulty I might not recommend * There is room to add more configurability to the controls across the range of supported headset. Default controls are good but more customizations would be nice. Overall would highly recommend at the price point. The community is also awesome - small but passionate.
This is a really cool game with tons of style and potential. The core foundation gameplay loop is all there, as you are advancing through random rooms, which mix between different combat and traversal challenges. You are unlocking random weapon cards as you fly and dash through the map, with your hands as jets propelling you through through the air. I really love the movement system and the combat is snappy and satisfying, especially the ground-pound. The boss battles are also pretty epic! Played on Windows Mixed Reality and the controls work perfectly. Very grateful that I could be a part of early access pre-launch and I can't wait to see how this game evolves over time. I could easily see this being one of my favorite VR games as more content is added.
The idea behind the game is cool but the balancing isn't there yet, and you'll be forced to read a lot of things in VR before you get started. Movement is controlled solely by pointing your hands in the direction you wish to move and then using a "booster." You keep sliding after you let go of the booster, which takes a lot of getting used to. This, along with a lot of unexpected freefalling, made me pretty queasy, despite hours and hours of VR under my belt. Another issue is that there is an inability to slide along any object you come in contact with, which means that you will inevitably run into an enemy attempting to shoot them and will get stuck on them and they will all shoot you relentlessly until you die trying to unstick yourself. This game would benefit massively from a traditional thumb stick and jetpack *option* for controls, as well as slower enemy projectiles so you actually have a chance to dodge them while you're learning the game. It would also benefit a lot from some voice acting or simpler, shorter, or easier to read dialogue. I really look forward to future updates, as the game has a lot of potential and a great central idea. Im giving a favorable steam-review mark because I want the dev to succeed with this, but I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone for the purpose of playing for fun.
Hand Cannon Virtuoso is One of the most fun vr games I've played in a while. With creating a vr game, it is hard to be original, but the controls, locomotion and the game is original for a vr game (at least I haven't found one similar yet). you move around by using thrusters and the location of your controllers instead of the analog stick. The levels are challenging but fun, and the weapons are easy to figure out and have fun with. The developer is very responsive and a great guy, and takes your feedback into account. This game is worth your time, and I 100% recommend it.
So first the pros I really love how difficult this game is I love it and hate it at the same time. (in a good way of course) I would recommend this game to almost everyone. Also I know people are complaining about movement but I personally really like it. But hey if you don't like hard games and don't want to get better that's your choice. But now for a couple of cons. So first is that the levels difficulty varies which even on floor one which I like but you'll be running into the same environments almost every time. (also dev if you are reading this I already know you are working on that) But hey you have a real gem here and right now it is my second favorite vr game to play. P.S there is an infinite height glitch that you can do by spamming the dash button in the air. (also its me the guy from Reddit I told you I would buy it)
Game is fun. Dev is nice.
DISCLAIMER: I was a beta tester so Im a lil bias Overall this game is a refreshing game in the VR market! Right off the bat, my favorite part of the game is the creative locomotion system, it makes you feel like a murder hungry ballerina flying through the sky without a care in the world. However the system is not for those with weak VR legs! The game is incredibly fun and I fully believe the developer will continue updating this game until its completion. The developer of this game has an incredible amount of passion twords this project! Show some love and give it a shot!
NOTE: I was an early beta tester of this game and some of my opinions are still coming from the earlier version of the game. I have not played the recent version as of 10/2/2020. Quick Overview: HCV is a game about a robot committing genocide against their own kind so they can graduate school with a high kill count. Every floor is randomized with different items, enemies, and layouts that can help or hurt the player in different forms. Weapons are given through "cards" that can have different attributes like corroding your enemies or causing them to be set on fire. These cards get cycled through as you use up the ammo for them, causing you to have to plan your card placements ahead of time. Locomotion: If you are not used to flying, moving at high velocities, being thrown around by explosives, etc. then I suggest you either take baby steps to get used to this game or play something intensive until you are no longer able to get VR sick. There is no walking in this game. You can fly wherever your controllers are pointing by pressing the grip buttons on your controller (This button changes based on controller setup) and dash in any direction by double pressing the same button. Dashing downwards causes you to create a shockwave attack that can be useful in some situations. Difficulty (Most of my complaints here may be outdated since the last time I've played this game it was in beta. Please take all of what I'm going to say here with a grain of salt.): This game is very... VERY difficult (since the beta the difficulty has been turned down significantly). The game will mop the floor with you the first couple runs. Bullets are hard to dodge, certain room layouts are a nightmare to fight in, and grenade knockback will leave you disoriented (This has been fixed). I had a run where I got a pistol as a reward for a boss fight and other runs I've gotten multiple maintenance rooms in a row, giving me enough health to tank most hits. Final thoughts: This is a game that can be fun but needs some tweaking to fix some of the rough edges that can jab and stab at the player. I like the idea of the game and find it pretty fun but there are some things that really stick out, and not for good reason. Should you play?: Yes, but be aware that this game is in Early Access. The developer has a discord server where you can submit bug reports, suggestions, etc. so don't feel shy to give suggestions. I've had a really good experience talking to the developer of HCV and he's open to criticism of his game.
Hand Cannon Virtuoso is a fantastic Rougelite that really makes you want to play one more run. The movement style is creative and fun using your hands as jetpacks. There is a nice variety of enemies and the bosses have unique mechanics. If you're looking for a FPS Rougelite, I highly suggest checking this one out!
This is one of those hidden VR gems that deserves more attention and praise. This game offers a high skill ceiling, with fast, and easy to understand mechanics. It fully takes advantage of the medium and format of VR, and it feels like a full game and not just a tech demo, despite still being in early access. The main game play is that of a shooter. However, instead of just running and gunning, you have rockets on your wrists, allowing you to jump, fly, glide, and even dash your way through the rooms. This fast, yet tight and responsive flying system, gives the game an immense speed to its main game play. However, this does mean it may not be the best first time VR experience as you move so quickly, but I have never personally experienced any dizziness or nausea from the game. But the game isn’t all twitch mechanics and reflexes. The game has a card and deck building twist. Each card in your deck is a different weapon, be it ranged or melee weapon, or some kind of special super power. These cards are always played in order, and you can only switch to the next card by using up your current card. This essentially removes any form of reloading with your weapons, and creates a constant barrage of bullets and blades. By progressing through the game, you get new cards, augments, and gadgets to further change and modify your abilities and tactics. By taking advantage of the order of your cards, you can create powerful combos and creative synergies. While it sounds complex, the game play is great. There are a variety of enemies, bosses, and the rouge lite mechanics offer dozens of hours of replayability as each run feels different and unique. One run and I'll be freezing and stunning the enemies before finishing them off with blades and axes, the next run I'm laying down turrets and dashing through the air while carpet bombing the enemies down below. While it has its faults, they seem minor and fixable with time and balancing. The climbing mechanic needs some love as it fits well into the core game play, but it just doesn't feel quite as polished as the rest of the game. But I have only experienced minor bugs, glitches, or crashes for an early access game so I imagine this game will grow into something wonderful. Further helping this, there is a great community, and a passionate developer behind the game! Don’t pass up this great gem!
