Discovered and fell in love with lvl374's work around 2022. This is possibly their finest work to date - marrying their striking art sensibilities with a pensive narrative about death, rebirth, and mechanical consciousness. Highly recommended.

Beautiful aesthetic and a soothing reflection on life and death.
Developed and published by lvl374, halfmoon is a small-scale indie adventure that proves an engaging premise can carry a game even without elaborate mechanics or an expansive world. The story follows Mio, a young woman who awakens after death and finds herself employed at the Afterlife Information Center, an unusual institution responsible for guiding souls toward their next destination. Rather than treating the afterlife as a place of fear or punishment, the game presents it as a strangely ordinary environment filled with coworkers, conversations, and quiet moments of reflection. This concept immediately gives halfmoon a distinctive identity and sets the tone for an experience centered on atmosphere and human connection. At its heart, halfmoon is a narrative-driven title that combines visual novel storytelling with light point-and-click interactions. Players spend much of their time exploring the Information Center, speaking with other staff members, and uncovering details about Mio's new existence. The supporting cast, particularly Nami and Rei, plays an important role in shaping the emotional journey. Their personalities contrast well with Mio's uncertainty, creating interactions that feel sincere and occasionally humorous. The writing does a commendable job of making these characters feel approachable, and while the game is brief, it succeeds in building enough chemistry among its cast to leave an impression. The game's minimalist gameplay may divide audiences. There are no demanding puzzles, action sequences, or deep progression systems to keep players occupied. Instead, halfmoon focuses almost entirely on delivering its story and establishing its setting. This design choice works well for players who enjoy slower, contemplative experiences, though those looking for more traditional gameplay loops may find it lacking. Fortunately, the concise runtime prevents the experience from overstaying its welcome, allowing the narrative to remain focused from beginning to end. Visually, halfmoon embraces a 1-bit pixel art style that gives it an unmistakable appearance. The monochromatic presentation creates an eerie yet comforting mood that perfectly complements its themes of life, death, and acceptance. Despite the limited visual palette, the environments possess a surprising amount of character, and the expressive sprites help convey emotion effectively. The simplicity of the art direction becomes one of the game's greatest strengths, demonstrating that a memorable aesthetic does not require technical complexity. Combined with its subdued atmosphere, the visuals help create a world that feels suspended somewhere between reality and dreams. Thematically, the game explores what it means to move forward after reaching the end of one's life. Rather than offering definitive answers, it encourages players to reflect on ideas of purpose, belonging, and companionship. There is a gentle optimism throughout the experience that prevents its subject matter from becoming overly somber. Even when dealing with mortality, halfmoon maintains a sense of warmth that makes its story accessible and emotionally resonant. The notion that meaningful relationships can still be formed in the most unexpected circumstances gives the narrative much of its charm. That said, the game's limited scope does leave certain ideas underdeveloped. The setting is intriguing enough to warrant deeper exploration, and some players may wish for additional chapters or more opportunities to learn about the wider workings of the afterlife. The point-and-click elements are serviceable but rarely memorable, functioning primarily as a means of moving the story forward. These shortcomings do not significantly diminish the experience, but they do highlight the constraints of a project designed around brevity. In the end, halfmoon is an introspective and thoughtfully crafted indie title that understands the strengths of its concept. It may not appeal to players seeking lengthy adventures or mechanically rich gameplay, but it offers a memorable narrative wrapped in a striking visual style. By presenting the afterlife as a place of quiet routine and unexpected friendships, lvl374 delivers an experience that lingers long after its final moments. For fans of narrative-focused games and atmospheric storytelling, halfmoon is a worthwhile journey through a world where endings are simply another beginning. Rating: 8/10
Love it!!!
A short Visual Novel about emotions, the chaos of life and stillness of Death with a really good presentation and art style
