Completed my first normal run in about 4 hours using Excalibur. This is a good game for hardcore platform players with experience or strong patience. The physics simulation feel solid, especially the weapon throw prediction. Each weapon allows different climbing paths with different skills, with different difficulty, so the map design is interesting and gives some freedom to explore. On the other hand, the game can be very frustrating. If you disliked Getting Over It, this may feel similar. Falling from high places happens often, checkpoints are few, and the final boss section is long and easy to fall down. The lightning strike shortens your decision time. If you are new to platform games, try the custom difficulty. Increasing the throw prediction time helps a lot.
Me resultó simpático y desafiante.
I don't normally play rage games, but the gimmick of this one really caught my attention. Gotta say, I'm impressed! The different weapon types (with unique abilities) give a lot of depth to a normally simple genre. Everything feels precise, fair, and fun. Congrats to the devs!
"First we hack, then we climb" - Jack Black I haven't finished playing this one yet, but I completed Regular mode with half the weapons so far, and am still enjoying my time with it. Definitely check out the demo if you're not sure about purchasing, as it has its own smaller/easier map and still lets you experiment with multiple weapons. I might edit my review later, but my initial comments on the demo still apply here: "Although I've ended up liking most of the games I've tried within the [foddian] subgenre, I think this one is a real standout when it comes to entertainment value. Beyond the original concept, lovely pixel art, and pleasingly tranquil atmosphere, the gameplay is super polished and the ... level design leaves a lot of room for experimentation and multiple approaches to many of the obstacles. Going in, I was expecting the throw projection visuals to make the game too easy, but this was not the case. While this feature does put a greater emphasis on planning over player execution in some locations, there are still plenty of sections that require "blind" throws and/or quick reactions in order to progress. With more weapons ... and difficulty modifiers being included in the full game (not to mention the speedrun potential), I can imagine it keeping me happily occupied for a long time. Definitely don't skip this one if it piques your interest."
Great game! Different weapons mechanics give you plenty of fun discovering new ways to climb!
As someone who has failed to enjoy many "Precision" games, this one is far easier, and enjoyable. with options for difficulty. although the guys on Nexlander and Pixel Rift podcasts had a hard time with it, so maybe I'm just finally good at a game?! nah, its just designed better imho.
Fun but (intentionally) frustraiting, worth checking out if you love a physics based challenge similar to getting over it
I had a blast hacking and climbing my way up this mountain with the battle axe. At first, I was winging it, throwing the axe with all the force I could and hoping for the best. With repetition, I began to find the movement predictable - just when the levels became more complex. As more and more obstacles are thrown at you, I took more risks and used more finesse to soft land on hard surfaces or gently leap over projectiles. The game looks, feels, and sounds great. The thunk of the axe into a surface never got old. Now that I have reached the top once, I'll be playing with some of the other weapons, to see if I can get a feel for them like I did with the default axe. For what it's worth, I played on the regular difficulty with checkpoints on. I felt like this was a perfect balance of challenge and fairness. I recommend that to anyone struggling with the game.
