Great Permutator is a puzzle. Hard and tricky. One in which you will have to build a complex system of conveyors and various devices so that the colored boxes can travel across the factory and arrive at right places and in right order. If you are into clever engineering puzzles, this game is for you.

Hidden gem. I bought The Great Permutator on a whim, it didn't disappoint. It looks deceptively simple, but it's a solid puzzle game that impressed on many levels. Each puzzle is surprisingly distinct, and stayed fresh throughout. After completing about half the game I thought patterns would start repeating and it would get easier. Not so, not at all. I don't know if each level was crafted entirely by hand or if developers got help from an automated generator, but it's obvious great care went into level design. The periodic introduction of new machines, well into the second act, was also well crafted and created a good sense of progression. As others have mentioned, the solutions often revolve around heuristics, bit of trial and error, finding clever tricks, and exploiting the ordering of inputs. A programming game this is not, and solutions are not generalized - they wouldn't work on any random inputs. Not an issue for me at all, but worth mentioning. This is an indy, graphics & music are what you'd expect. The music is repetitive - but you're not buying this for the soundtrack, right? Graphics could certainly be better, I'd have preferred a higher resolution myself. That said, I'm not docking any points here - the game play doesn't suffer and developers time was spent where it mattered, on the puzzles themselves. Well worth the asking price if that's you kind of thing.

Fun and interesting puzzle game. Especially something for the person who likes boxes and conveyor belts! It has a quite good soundtrack as well, although it can get a bit repetitive.
It's a great puzzler but incredibly hard. For me personally the difficulty started spiking too hard already after 7 or 8 levels. Not for the faint of heart. Incredibly challenging.
INSTALLING NOTHING
The game is a puzzle, but it's tricky and is not so usual puzzle. At first glance the levels are simple. However, after a while they can make you crazy and take hours and even days to solve. The gameplay is rather unusual. In regard to the graphic and music, they are simple and not so enchanting, but the game has its own style. Thus, if you prefer to solve interesting puzzles which can blow up your mind, the game is for you. Otherwise, be careful.

Old but awesome. Now sold for hefty discounts at indie bundle sites but is it abandonware? No. This game was around before factorio and latest 3D first person factory puzzle games were around and pushed this genre to a more mainstream thing. If you have completed those newer games and want more then this one is worth checking out. Good luck getting the achievements without warping your brain.
This game is too difficult to be fun at all.
Seems simple at first, then you realize that your brain is going to get fried. This game is hard as hell, and wrapping your head around these puzzles is going to provide you with nightmares for weeks to come. Level 1 sets you up for level 2 to take you down. In The Great Permutator you have a soft limit to each stage for the number of conveyor belts and pieces that you use. In order to get the objects from the top to the bottom, you're going to need to start thinking of how to manipulate the system. Your soft limit is typically 20 conveyors, but you can place as many conveyors as you want (you just get less score if you go above 20, I guess). Not readily apparent at first, there is an order to which boxes have to leave the factory first, which is where the true challenge comes in. You need to figure out ways to make sure the right boxes leave the factory first. Unlike the "as many as you want" rule, this rule is hard and immutable. You can't just take a penalty and drop the boxes off in any order. It's fun if you like puzzlers, but if you don't, then you might as well save your $7 and use it to buy something more your style.
