I suggest that the author plays a couple of this type of games first to get a general idea of the concept. Have a look at e.g. Zombie Exodus. In this "interactive novel" here I got to choose whether I wear blue trousers or skinny jeans and that is pretty much all I can do during hundreds of screens. Next, next, next, next, next... Clicking on the NEXT button seems to be the only interaction here. Wow, I unlocked several achievments by clicking NEXT a couple of times. Hey what about if you let me decide how I want the story to go? This is garbage.
I wish I'd held back a few days on this one to see some reviews but was pretty excited at the prospect of another Zombie Exodus type game. Sadly it's absolutely nowhere near as good quality. The interaction is very basic - I read about five pages, realised I hadn't made any decisions in a while and then clicked through NEXT just to see how many more it took before I'd be prompted for something again. Another four pages! Nine pages without a choice really isn't an interactive novel, its just an ebook. Coupled with this the main two characters are hugely annoying at the beginning. I know they're meant to be that way because they're teenagers but I'm not really up for that when one of those characters is meant to be me. Your friend at the beginning makes some really awful choices and you barely get to disagree with them, if at all. The writing itself isn't really strong enough either to float the entire story without choices. If it had been I might not have actually noticed the lack of involvement. Overall I don't know whether the characters progressed to less annoying or not because after the 'nine pages of no choices' experiment I gave up on the book and wouldn't go back to it.
Calling this 'interactive' is stretching the word to the breaking point.
I jumped the gun with my early impressions this game is cartoonish with its virtue signalling, If you play as a male character & your survivor friend is female then they drag you out of EVERY dangerous situation, you have little control over the narrative of the game except for what turns out to be very minor choices. Hell she even calls you her sidekick at one point. Your character is basically a weakling who has to be led by the hand by the strong wahmen to get you out of everything.
Most characters were well made with credible personality and i'd say half the choice were relevant/suitable all the while the pacing isn't bad. BUT -the way the story push you in the direction of Callum is a big turn off : Seriously, in the stats he was despising me and almost killed me(and there's too many time where he made the situation dire by his stupidity/ dangerous behavior) but the game tried to force a romance out of it.. -Many thing are wrong and/or stupid within the story and how it unfold (i obviously don' ask for a "realist" zombie game, but at last don't make the character a bunch of moron to help the scenario) -the lack of polish : many time the game used the wrong words like He instead of She, also some long dead characters appeared from nowhere as if they were alive and finally there are a lot of grammar and syntax error. Overall i didn't had a bad time, or better said the positive overweight the negative, but the author should really reflect on the mistake in this story(way too few impactful choices for considering it as a game)
To be honest if Steam had a neutral vote option I would give it as there are flaws that really drag it down but there is enough stuff I like that bumps it up to positive, if barely. I rather liked the best friend (if I ignored he/she undergoing spontaneous sex changes) and Angel, I thought both were done rather well, I also thought the diary was something of a nice touch. Also I felt that the descriptions of the bodies, the scenes, and overall environment were all very well done. However, as other reviews have noted, there wasn't as many game changing decisions as one would like, or decisions at all, as I found myself clicking next for several long pages with your character doing things and having discussions before hitting a decision which could range from "do I side with my best friend or Callum in their usual spat?" to "what clothes do I wear?" Not to say there wasn't good stuff in some of that, there definitely was, but there could have been more. There could have also been meaningless decisions but they still give your character the chance to respond to things in a way you choose. Also I feel like what this suffers from is a lack of, well, personality bars with your character's personality being defined by what those are, if they had those a lot more potential could have been in various things, including in the diary. It is not a mandatory thing of course but I feel though it could have been improved that way. Like I said, there is enough for me to like that I am willing to give a positive review but there are some glaring problems that some might find it hard to look past.
I really wanted to enjoy this one. The story was interesting, and it was of a nice length. Many of the main characters were unique and relatively interesting, especially Killian. However, there seemed to be very few choices, with many of them being about what clothes your character selected (added a bit of flavor to your character, but little else). So it felt more like reading a book than playing a game. I also felt that the main character was a bit bland, as I tried to play her as rebellious but ended up feeling like she went with the flow or faded into the background in most of the scenes. There were also typos, issues with the story populating the main character's gender/clothing wrong at times, and some scene descriptions that were a bit confusing. Overall, I would love to see more from this author because I enjoyed the story so much. But the problems with this game were a bit too much for me, so I only played it once.
I don't usually leave reviews for games but I have to defend this interactive story. If your looking to interact with MC's stat's and skill's then you need to go to Zombie Exodus or Zombie Exodus Safe Have. This story is a true survival horror story where you and your BFF (spoilers other than you he/she is a real ♥♥♥♥ to everyone) is trying to survive the apocalypse. You don't have stat's or skills your an average teenager who has never shot a gun in there entire life and now they have to learn to kill zombie's or other people. When you do get to choose something (other than your looks and what to wear) their will be a good consequence or a bad consequence but other than that it's an older version of interactive story where your not billy bad ass your just a teenager who likes to look out windows and daydream all the time. So the Positives I do like the story, my favorite character is Angel (little girl) who begins to see you like a brother, and it kept me reading for 3 days straight waiting to finally see my character romance their BFF. The negatives their is a bug in the code that when you pick the BFF gender it will periodically get the pronouns wrong, you will learn to hate your BFF their personality is like Madison from Zombie Exodus Safe Haven but on steroids at least Maddie is likable but your BFF attitude towards others you kind of want to abandon them however I think anyone would behave like them if your constantly tired, hungry, and look like you come back from a concentration camp. The last negative think I have to say is if you side with your BFF all the time other people will put their actions on to you like them saying death follows you wherever you go which is kind of stupid since like I say main character rarely talks, he looks out windows and landscapes all the time, and hasn't really done much of anything other than being you BFF's shadow.
