Drop left. Drop right. Drop up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15wK7g1GzRM If you want to see my first impressions as they happened, watch my video above. You're a member of the Gravity Heroes, here to chew bubble gum and manipulate gravity, and you're all out of bubble gum. Falling to the left or right side of the screen is fun, but it's going to feel like a slip-and-slide until you and your friends get used to it. Choose one of four color-coded characters, grab a gun, and dance around the enemies as if you had an out-of-control jetpack. Boss fights are a step below bullet hell. Gravity Heroes doesn't pull any punches with its difficulty, and skillful gameplay is as beautiful as the graphics. And for those of us who remember Top Gear's theme on SNES, Barry Leitch composed the music. There's a lot here to enjoy, and Gravity Heroes is even better with friends.
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Average ★★★☆☆

First Impressions
I didn't pay much attention when looking into the possibility of reviewing Gravity Heroes (GH). My main goal was to find a local coop game since I was having a friend visit, as I never seem to have enough of them. It looked alright and when I showed it to my friend, it was the game he expressed the most interest in. The game turned out differently than how I thought it'd be from checking out the trailer, but it was more novel than I might have hoped.
Gameplay
What I expected from GH was a gravity-based platformer, where you'd swap between the floor and ceiling as you progressed through stages. Maybe not exactly like Mega Man, but a run and gun game of that nature. Instead, you can stand on any of the walls, and do so within self-contained arenas, killing waves of enemies as they spawn in. Despite not being what I expected, this is still a rather fun set-up for a game, and might be better in some respects. Platforming games done poorly can be frustrating or boring, so well-made arena stages don't lose anything for the lack of screen scroll. Throw in a handful of gun power-ups, and it's a pretty solid game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2886824512
Controls
My friend and I played with controllers, though there is the option to play with the keyboard. Considering that I get confused with the gravity changing already, that's a headache I'd not want to add on top of it. Thankfully, the controls work well and aren't too complicated. Something you do have to get used to is not being able to aim your weapon fire. You can't jump and shoot down or aim upwards. Instead, your shots only go left and right (or up and down if you're on a wall), with jumping or falling due to a gravity shift being the only way to adjust that. Although this is a restriction, I think being able to aim would undermine the concept and make it too easy.
Story
As a team of four, you'll respond to an uprising of synths, who theoretically are programmed to do no harm to humans. That doesn't seem to be stopping them though, and with no clear reason for this sudden change, your crew tries figuring out what might be causing this. Unsurprisingly, it winds up being a pretty stereotypical scenario, though I'll avoid spoiling it. Also, with the characters my friend and I chose, the continued distrust and aggravation Magnus showed about synths got old. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2886824321
Visuals
Something the developers did well was in creating the visuals for GH. Even though it's 2D, with the shadows and layering in the backgrounds, it suggests there's greater depth then there really is. Foreground objects have a nice level of detail to them, although the characters themselves are too small to get much finesse in stages. Their larger portraits during dialogue gives them a clear image, and they all look decently designed. Some of the enemies were on the basic side, but it's also very easy to distinguish them from one another.
Sound Design
As the locations and gimmicks change after each boss battle, so does the music. They're not very memorable, but they've got an upbeat tempo that suits the action-oriented gameplay. With what I'd call a synthetic sound effect, GH includes tones in its songs that makes me think of a sci-fi setting. Since you'll be firing your weapon more often than not, it tends to drown out the music though. At least the sound effects seem appropriate for the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2886824652
Pros
🌟 Including a ghost mechanic after dying allows players to revive themselves or a buddy, in a way that doesn't require the other person to sacrifice their health or put themselves in danger. 🌟 The Patriarch boss is quite the slug fest. Thankfully, if you die partway through the boss, it'll maintain your progress at the last phase you were in. 🌟 Dialogue is unique based on what character(s) you choose, which is a really nice touch. It can change the tone of the story quite a bit. 🌟 Being able to fire at enemies constantly while dodging and moving is useful.
Cons
❌ For whatever reason, you can replay campaign stages, but for the sake of achievements, you can't earn a higher rank than the one you received when playing it the first time. I've never seen that before and that's because it's stupid! ❌ The game is on the short side. Even with the arena style gameplay, there's only 15 stages, 5 of which are boss fights. ❌ Although not the worst thing, the unskippable puzzles before boss battles were a bit annoying.
Tips
🔍 Each situation, including boss phases, seem to have a strategy in mind for handling them. For instance, blasting the ice and fire boss while they're balancing their HP. They stand still, but still take damage. You can even skip a phase if you do enough damage in time. 🔍 Don't carelessly fling yourself all around the place. Staying in one location allows you to clear out enemies until you find good opportunities to go after other ones elsewhere. You will have to chase down foes at some point, so don't be overly passive. 🔍 Taking damage while wearing armor doesn't count as harming your HP. You should still be careful, but it gives a bit of a buffer.
Final Thoughts
My friend and I had fun with GH, even though he had to leave before we could finish the playthrough together. I didn't mind playing on my own, but certainly noticed how it felt not having someone watching my back. GH emphasizes the coop feature strongly, so it'd be best experienced if you have four people playing together, though just having one person join you is helpful. It would mean there's less power-ups to go around, but a lot more fire power at all times too. Although ideal for four people, this is a good local coop game I'd recommend for anybody looking for one. Target Audience: Those looking for a unique shooter with friends to play with Summary: Gravity Heroes is one of those games that has an interesting concept on the surface that actually does live up to how you'd want it to play out in terms of gameplay. The ability to move gravity does help a lot here without being overly powerful....as long as you use it correctly and skillfully. You'll struggle a tiny bit at first as your brain needs a period of time to sorta “reset” how it thinks, but if you adapt, you'll be matrix dodging and zooming across the map and dealing with the interesting problems put before you in level design and enemy placement. The game is easy to follow and look at for the most part and enemies have clear attack animations and readable tells, even if you end up running into them with the chaos of everything around you. Granted, that's sorta the gotcha here: sometimes there's a lot going on and it can get overwhelming at a single player portion, so this does seem to be a game good with friends considering the resurrection mechanic. With that said, it'd be absolute chaos on the screen as well. Level design is great in introducing new attack patterns to deal with, but once in a while you'll get an enemy and a placement that feels unfair or may take you a real minute to understand what's going on. Some sound design is also lacking in certain guns/places, as the game doesn't do a great job of audio feedback from when you hit an enemy, relying strickly on visual indicators that can get blocked out in the right situations. The biggest thing will be if the game can keep you playing after you finish the relative short campaign, and while there's good guns and enemy variety, it's really going to come down to you and your friends in play sessions in order for that to really get a bang for buck. The price point is well warranted here, and action players will get a good solid game to have fun with a mechanic of gravity with, but there's not much else beyond that to really sink your teeth into in the long haul. Gameplay Footage: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/924849365 Lists: Positives:

Gravity mechanic helps define some unique situations that can be fun to play, but also fun to master.
Good enemy variety up front, and level design differences help makes each scenario a little different.
Animation is clean and crisp and most of the time you know what's going on.
The chaos of the gameplay can lead to some hilarious moments, and seems to be better with friends.
Resurrection mechanics seem to do well to help the chaos.
Negatives:

UI health bar being on the character and the way its done leads to situations where you can't see what's going on with their health in specific circumstances.
The game's campaign will be too short for some (it's good for the price point however).
Once in a while you get a scenario that doesn't feel polished/fair, and can leads to some frustration.

This game is amazing! At first I thought it would be just another retro arena shooter, even though the visuals looked amazing. But it wasn't! The gravity shifting mechanics are amazing. The first time you shift your character's gravity is simply mind blowing. It takes time to get used to the controls in different gravities, but the learing curve is swift. The way the game takes advantage of different gravities in the levels and bosses are also very cool. You really have to keep shifting and thinking in order to get through. Lastly, the aesthetics are incredible as well! The pixel art and animation are top notch and the soundtrack offer a heart pumping sci-fi mood, just in par to the game's theme. I totally recommend this game for anyone who's interested in an indie game with an uniquelly fresh taste. 10/10.
