Generally, games that used retro graphics utilized distinctive features and characteristics to accentuate their gaming experience. In this context, Grand Attrition is absolute garbage and probably the ugliest game on Steam. The gameplay is decent at best and far from a memorable experience, though even if it was an extremely enjoyable experience I would still stay away from it because well... would you still eat an enjoyable meal if it was covered in s**t? Save yourself from bleeding eyes and a forgettable game, there are many excellent RTS games at the same price point like Rusted Warfare – RTS and Mindustry just to name a few. Thank me later.
Okay, I'm not a big review writer but I found this game and thought I'd give it a go. Things I liked: Over all this isn't too bad for a cheap indie game. All of the units (Normal, special, or otherwise) are actually unique with their own functions and purposes, which was rather nice. Map size goes from small to rather absurdly large. Honestly most of the standard stuff is par for the course but the things I really enjoyed are the Side-grades, the forts, the special units, and most importantly, the Talents. The side grades are all just that, sidegrades, they really change up how you can tackle a game and once I figured out that I could do that to the unit spawning buildings it really helped. The forts are these “Structures that contain “loot” that can be very beneficial for the rest of your current run. Then the special units, Some of them are spawnable units that cost a lot of resources but they all do different things aside from just attacking whats ever in front of them. Then you have the non-spawnable units which are also strange and fun to use. Finally the talents, I really love the talents in this game and it’s one of the main reasons I keep playing. They are a ton of fun to use and can really change up how you play a game. Furthermore, none of them feel particularly jarring or like you are supposed to have them. My favorite two are Explosive when touched and conversion blossom. My computer hates it but its great to watch unfold at higher difficulties. Things I don’t like: To start the music isn’t bad, but it ends rather quickly and kind of be a tad jarring when it switches between its tracks. If they could be looped to last a bit longer, that would be great. I can’t really tell how long games will take, you can set the time of your days and nights and the number of them you want to go through. It’s great for setting up simple and fast games but there is a fair bit of math involved in figuring out how long a game will go. If there could be a bit in the setup screen that tells you how long a game will go for, that would be nice. Now, this only happened once but the game did crash. I have no real idea what caused it and I’m not really game dev savvy so I can’t really speculate either. I did try to replicate it but I was not able to. Honestly, I could go on more about things I like and things I don’t like but this is already pretty long. Overall it’s not too bad and for under $4 I don’t consider my time or money wasted.
Fun free-form strategy game that doesn't lock you into one form of playing the game. A good way to pass the time with plenty of features to experiment with. The game has great potential and plenty of room for improvisation and improvement.
The graphics made me want to kill myself. The gameplay made me want to live. Gets good around difficulty 4 or 5, but before then is kind of meh. The best strategy is to turtle after difficulty 8. Gnomes get stupid tiny and can ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ your entire army. Wizards need to be nerfed. They can crap out 100000 magic buzz saws every second and are only stopped by barbarians. The inter-unit combat and boner dilating playstyle customization make the game worth it. Needs more content. Wait for a sale.
Makes you feel like your hand is trapped in a blender (in a good way)
Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Good things:
This game has a very basic pixel art style but I like pixels. There are talents you can unlock in the game and use them to change how you play each time. You can use resources to build units and buildings. Someone tried to experiment by trying to mash together 5 types of games and ideas from other 5 popular games into one. There are difficulty settings, max number of units player and enemy can have, how long the day and night lasts, how many nights must pass before blood moon event and how many nights you have to survive in order to win so you can play the game in any way you want.
Bad things:
This is a clicker game with extra steps mashed in an RNG generator. There are instructions but they are just a sentence and there is no tutorial as that would take time to program and it is far easier and faster to just create an RNG generator and write a sentence of instructions. Your commander moves super fast while all other units moves super slow. Enemies just spawn randomly instead of coming from some sort of a base or from enemy commander and you can also spawn units anywhere without any reason or logic behind it. You can look at units stats before you start the game but there is no info about unit stats after you start the game so when you play you don’t really know anything about your units but in the end their stats and levels don’t matter anyway as all that matter is the number of units you have vs the number of units enemy has. The whole map of the game is just a RNG mess without any logic or reason or any function. Water, ice, grass, mountains, desert everything is placed randomly and I think these tiles means nothing. You move thru all the tiles like they were the same thing so maybe they are just identical in game mechanics and just have random colors. And the moving is super funny as your commander moves super fast while the rest of the units moves super slow so in order to move your army from point A to point B you have to click every few milimeters so they all catch up to the commander or click on point B and see commander sprinting there while you have to wait 10 minutes for the army to get there. Also resources randomly spawn on map and to gather them you have to click them like in a clicker game. There is also a blood moon mechanic from popular games but even that is done badly. Game also spawns neutral HUGE monsters on a map that are created from black pixels and if you click them they bug out and make the whole screen flicker. Also huge monsters are so huge that it is impossible to see your units or the commander that are fighting them so you don’t really know what is happening and who is winning as there are also no health bars to show you your units and monster hp. This game tries to use many mechanics of many other games but not a single mechanic is used in a fun way. I won the game 2 times and lost one time. First time I won the game by just spawning 40 units close to my commander and doing nothing for the next 20 minutes. They defended themselves as they were attacked mostly by 1-3 enemy units from time to time and huge monster didn’t spawn. The 2nd time I played I did lose as the game spawned 2 huge monsters close to my commander during first 3 minutes. The 3rd time I played I did win because by clicking on enemy units you can make them convert and be yours and I clicked on enemy unit that was in his base and it’s attack also started to convert everyone else to join me so whole enemy army was on my side pretty quickly and they destroyed all his buildings. The music starts and after a while it suddenly ends and after some time passes without sound it starts again as it is the same music badly looped together or sometimes a playlist of a few sounds and each of them have that strange sound that means the music has ended and you have to wait for the new one to load. The developer could not even cut out these silent seconds and sharp sounds away from the files he used to create music. It shows the overall quality of this “game” and the whole “development” process. It also looks strange that the only 3 positive reviews that exists are made by people that did 1-3 reviews in their whole life. Looks like a paid reviews or good reviews for a free game kind of deal for me. Also the game got a typical discount on release day type of deal that many trash overpriced games use right now on steam to make the game look better by inflating it’s price. I think the real price for this game should not be more than 0,99$.
Conclusion
This is just a low effort clicker game mashed with horrible RNG generator mashed with a few other mechanics. It does many things at the same time and all of them badly. Overall score 2.5/10
