truly the best game about making rodents and fish and reptiles and mammals and stuffed animals and fungi fight each other ever created. brimming with personality in both its art and its music, and boasting a party system with plenty enough incentive to try different team configurations, Goofy Lil Guys is a charming and competent local party game I'll be happy to return to at least a few times. Wish UI was more polished visually in places but it's functional and that's way more important. Shoutouts mousecar.
it was very fun and I liked the design and gameplay. would recommend an online multiplayer mode in the future. 10/10 game

"Goofy Lil Guys" is an unusual and small scoped experimental game that tests whether a multiplayer game can be successful if the developer doesn't know how to do netcode or online matchmaking. Results are in, the answer is "No". What do you do in the game? So this is basically just a 2.5D brawler game where you control one of a handful of "critters" and fight wild critters and other players (who have to be sitting next to you and also don't exist because if you ask your friends to sit next to your gaming PC instead of at their own, just to play a crappy tech demo, you soon won't have any friends). There's also "legendary" bosses... but nobody bothered playing this long enough to get that far. This game relies on multiple players to work properly, but the developer couldn't work out how to do any netcode or proper online matchmaking. Steam's "Remote Play Together" tries to make up for this glaring shortfall, but PC gamers just don't crowd around a single PC in the living room anymore. This glaring shortfall may be caused by shortsightedness or just lack of competence from the developer, but whatever the reason, the lack of proper online features for a multiplayer only game disqualifies this. The graphics here are particularly awful, the 3D backdrops look like they're all asset flipped stock assets and the characters/critters are all just billboarded sprites that look like they were made in MS-Paint... it's 2026, not 1993! The graphics are so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. Insultingly, the developer insists that you should play this with a console peasant children's toy gamepad instead of KB+M. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're designing games for. It's the responsibility of the developer to ensure the game runs well on the platform they're selling it on, with the primary peripherals that PC gamers use. Next is pricing and what value this has for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Even as a free game, this couldn't find an audience. With a peak of only 4 players, it's clear the Steam community took one look and walked away. They literally couldn't pay people to spend time playing this. This "free" game won't count toward your game collection count on your profile. With that in mind, is it something you should still download? Nope, even if you don't have to pay any money up front, this isn't something I can suggest PC gamers spend their time on... there's thousands of better games on Steam.
