Golden Rails: Road To Klondike
Casual game of 2022. Lay railroad tracks through prairie and mountain ranges to allow prospectors to reach Klondike and stake their claim there. Establish trade routes and negotiate with the Indians to be allowed to build on their land. Use your money sense to establish a fair market and put a greedy investor out of business. (Editor) This is a collecting game that does everything a bit differently than other game series of this type. It starts with the nice story and runs through the whole game. Just good gameplay. Of course you have to collect as much as you can here, but keep it within a logical framework without pointless more, more, more. In particular, the varied management of your workforce makes it a strategy game at a high level of difficulty. A couple of good little innovations compared to the predecessor lead to 14 hours of gaming fun. The best game in this series so far. Quite tricky but never too difficult. My fun recommendation has it. Two thumbs up! This is a really good time-management game from Yustas studios. This game is similar to the two Golden Rails game from last year, but it is improved in every way. It is a real change of pace from many of the other time-management games out there, in that you feel like you are actually making a dynamic difference on the map, both with the train-switching mechanism and the worker-allocation mechanism. First of all, the levels are very interesting. Unlike in series like Hercules or Moai, you're not just fixing buildings and repairing roads; you're a railway engineer and you have to lay track, hire workers, decide where they go (the same pool of workers are used in buildings and in running around the map), and turn switch-signals so that your trains go to different places. The fact that you have to keep your tracks maintained (such as shoveling snow that keeps falling) is a nice dynamic touch. Additionally, there is a shooting-range mini-game every 10 or so levels for those of you who like to practice for your FPS games. You can set the level of difficulty, from Casual to Easy to Timed and so forth, depending on whether you want to earn you 3 gold stars per level or have them handed to you. This is a nice touch especially if you're old or lack dexterity or strategic thinking, or even if you're great but just want to zen out and have fun building stuff. One improvement that I personally like over the first Golden Rails is that there is a meta-game. In two ways: first there is a train car that you can improve and decorate depending on how many gold stars you get on the various levels. Secondly, you get optional bonuses that you can use inside the levels if you want to. For example, workers are 30% cheaper to hire, or you earn 10% more money. The more levels you complete, the more bonuses you earn, and you can then go back and replay earlier levels. There are 50 levels and 10 bonus levels. As always with these games, I recommend playing 5 to 10 at a time. Each level can take 5 to 10 minutes each, so even doing a half-dozen can take an hour. And the game is more fun if you take it as it was designed, just doing a few levels a day. Finally, I really love the music. I would buy an OST of this music. It's just a jaunty western tune, the kind that they used to play in old cowboy movies when the goofy sidekick would do something funny, so it's very appropriate for this game. This is a really good time-management game from Yustas studios, makers of "The Viking Brothers." For "Golden Rail: Road to Klondike" I give two thumbs up. A definite recommendation.
Golden Rails: Road to Klondike is a time management game developed by Yustas Games Studio and published by Alawar Entertainment. It is the third game in the Golden Rails series. This time, we follow the siblings Jack and Jill as settlers are going west in search of gold. However, as Jack and Jill help to build settlements and a railroad to connect settlers to the west, there's a main villain. It's Scrooge, a merchant who sells items at ridiculously high prices. Basically, he wants to have a monopoly on the market, which the siblings find to be unfair. Thus, they continue their mission, and at the same time, they do their best to stop Scrooge's plans. I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, there are a total of 50 story levels, along with 5 mini-levels that are shooting range games and 10 bonus levels that are unlocked after you complete the story levels. As is usually the case in Alawar's time management games, you can choose among the usual 3 difficulty levels: relaxed, normal, or expert. (For purposes of this review, I chose to play on normal mode.) In each level, you're given a number of tasks to complete, such as rebuilding the railroad or taking down bandits. Depending on how quickly you complete the tasks, you can earn up to 3 stars per level. Also, in each level, there is a hidden owl, and finding all the owls will earn a Steam/in-game achievement. With the stars you earn, you can use them to purchase items that will help you in completing levels more quickly. These items can include producing more food or making the trains that bring materials arrive more quickly. In addition, there are the usual Steam/in-game achievements but no Steam trading cards at the time of this review. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. I enjoyed the first two games in the series, so of course, I was looking forward to playing this latest installment. First, I liked the story. It's fun getting to follow Jack and Jill on their latest adventure as they set off to help the prospectors while they continue to build the railroad. At the same time, it's interesting to have Scrooge as the main villain. Although he's your typical villain, he instigates the whole argument of a monopoly versus a free market. As for the gameplay, I was able to unlock all of the achievements without having to replay levels. (In the first game, at least, I recall having to replay a few levels to earn specific achievements, so it was nice that this wasn't the case this time.) Having the option to choose a difficulty option is good, too, for those who either want to relax and enjoy the game and story or want to have a more challenging gaming experience. The only technical issue I had was that a few levels glitched. Basically, if I had workers multi-task as I was close to completing the last remaining task, then the workers would stand still and the level wouldn't be counted as completed for me. I had no choice but to restart the level then. In my opinion, this should be fixed in a future update. As for the art, it's in the same cartoony style as in the first two games. It depicts the whole Wild West theme very well, and I like the use of bright colors. The sprites and backgrounds are done well, too. In regards to the soundtrack, the tracks are the same as in the previous two games. Although, like the art, they depict the Wild West theme well, I wish there had been a couple of new tracks to add a bit of variety. Overall, would I recommend Golden Rails: Road to Klondike? If you enjoy time management games and you like the Golden Rails series, I'd recommend giving this a try. Although it helps to have played the previous two games (for story context purposes), it isn't necessary to do so. At the asking price, I'd say it's worth getting for the amount of content and gameplay, but you can always wait to get it on a sale, and it's in a couple of Steam bundles, too. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
Fazit: kaufen, kaufen, kaufen! :-)
Golden Rails: Road To Klondike
2. Update
This is a fun TM game requiring strategy in how you build, how many people you employ and how you distribute them. The bonuses come few and far between (purchased with stars) and you'll have to replay several of the levels to get the timing right. There are three modes of play (un-timed, normal and hard) and lots of achievements (two of which don't work). And there are these owls you have to find, which serve no purpose whatsoever, and it's annoying to have to find them, but not difficult. And personally, I really don't like superfluous, cutesy stuff. All in all, a good game. I played hard mode and found it a satisfying challenge. I'm altering my review to let people know that all of the achievements have been fixed and they all work perfectly! Thank you developers for working very, very hard to fix this.
