Golden Rails: Harvest of Riddle
Collecting game from 2023. A new adventure awaits you in Golden Rails: Mysterious Harvest. Join the dynamic duo Jack and Jill once again to answer the call of another mayor who needs help organizing a big fair. The mayor has big plans for the town, and it's up to you to help Jack and Jill make them a reality. Your job is to transport the rich vegetable harvest and repair old railroad tracks to ensure the festival's success. [Editor] This is about collecting and building, as well as repairing and clearing paths, and searching. So, there's nothing more to say. Not enough info? OK, then I'll write something else. There are also mini games, not difficult and they could have been left out. The graphics are good and the sound is good too. There is a story to play that makes for a little adventure. Since there have been many predecessors to this series, the gameplay is well-developed and, so to speak, perfect. But that's really it. As you can see from my playing time, you can forget the real world for a while with this game. Clear recommendation for everyone who likes games like this.
Golden Rails: Harvest of Riddle
Fazit: tuff, tuff, tuff! ^^ ;-)
Polecam.
Golden Rails: Harvest of Riddles
Note: A copy of the game was gifted to me by a wonderful friend. ^^ Golden Rails: Harvest of Riddles is a time management game developed by Yustas Games Studio and published by Alawar Casual. It is the sixth game in the Golden Rails series. As usual, you take on the roles of Jack and Jill as they're traveling on the railroad, looking for their newest adventure. Soon after, the duo receive a message from a mayor of a nearby town who is planning on hosting a grand fair. Basically, he needs Jack and Jill's help in transporting vegetables for the fair, and the pair get some assistance along the way. However, some of the people helping out with the fair are hiding some dark secrets that may very well threaten the festival, and it's up to Jack and Jill to expose these people and make sure that the grand fair is a success. That's the basic story synopsis, so I'll stop here to avoid spoilers. XD As for the gameplay, there are a total of 45 story levels, with 15 bonus levels unlocked afterwards, as well as 6 mini-game levels. You can choose from among the usual difficulty levels: easy, normal, or hard. (For review purposes, I chose to play on normal mode.) The usual levels are pretty straightforward. You're given a list of tasks to complete, such as repairing broken railroad tracks and stopping bandits, and you can construct buildings that produce resources, like food or wood, in order to do so as well as hire additional workers. The hidden owls (easter eggs) are back, and also, in a few levels, there are timed clues, which is a new mechanic. As I alluded to earlier, there's a mystery going on, so these clues will appear when particular actions, like reaching the sheriff, are taken. As these clues only stick around for a limited time, you have to reach them quickly. However, they reappear if you miss getting them the first time around. Power-ups, like workers running faster, are unlocked as you progress through the levels, which can make completing them easier. Like in many time management games, you can earn up to 3 stars per level, depending on how quickly you complete all the tasks. As for the mini-games, most of them involve handing out vegetables to the various customers who drop by while one is the shooting bandits game from the previous installments. Of course, there are plenty of Steam achievements, which will count towards a user's global total. However, no Steam trading cards are available at the time of this review. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. For those who follow my reviews, it's probably no secret that I like time management games a lot and the ones published by Alawar are among my favorite. It goes without saying that I was happy to see another Golden Rails come out on Steam. With that said, I'll first go over my thoughts on the story. I enjoyed seeing Jack and Jill again, wondering what newest adventure these two would encounter. At first, it seemed like it would be another run-of-the-mill adventure where the pair would help out a town and rebuild the railroad along the way. However, this time, there's the whole mystery element. Without going too much into spoiler territory, there are a couple of people who are trying to sabotage the festival by
ruining the crops that Jack and Jill are transporting
. (Well, I tried not to go into spoiler territory, but at least, I put spoilers in spoiler text. lol) I like that this is a new aspect to the story, and it doesn't hurt that I'm a mystery fan. ^^ As for the gameplay, I didn't encounter any technical issues. I should note, though, that I found the first few levels on normal mode to be a bit difficult to earn 3 stars. This hasn't been the case for previous installments, so I think the devs upped the overall difficulty of this game. Still, it is doable to earn 3 stars on all the levels, especially once all of the available power-ups are unlocked. The gameplay is enjoyable as always, and I liked the new vegetable mini-game. All of the achievements unlocked for me without problems although I found myself having to replay a couple of levels, as I was missing achievements for rebuilding tracks and planting gardens. Getting those remaining achievements then earned me the master achievement for getting all of the achievements. In regards to the art, it retains that cartoony style, which feels appropriate. The sprites and backgrounds give off that Wild West vibe, and I like the use of vibrant colors. The cutscenes are in a slightly comic book style, which I felt was good. As for the music, the tracks are the same as in the previous games. I didn't notice any new tracks, which is a bit of a shame since I would have loved to listen to one or two new tracks to add a bit of variety. Still, the tracks that are present fit well with the Western theme. Overall, would I recommend Golden Rails: Harvest of Riddles? If you enjoy time management games and are especially a fan of the ones published by Alawar and even more so, of the Golden Rails series, then this is definitely worth taking a look. I enjoyed the game and found the gameplay to be a little more challenging this time although still doable to obtain all of the achievements and whatnot. For the asking price, I think it's worth getting although you can wait to get it on a sale, and it's in a couple of Steam bundles. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
A fine entry in the series that does everything right, and adds a new element to the plot: you're not just laying railroad track and helping townspeople, but you're also solving a well-written mystery. Every few levels you can find a clue that you add to the 'evidence board' in the main screen, and the story plays out like a detective show set in western times. The levels can be a bit lengthy, so I recommend doing just two or three at a time to get maximum enjoyment out of the plot mystery and out of the time-management gameplay. Two thumbs up.
I suggest to try the demo. If you've been used to playing Alawar games in hard mode, now is the time to soften your stance. Already level 1 took me several tries to get 3 stars. By the time level 4 rolled around, I threw in the towel and switched to normal. Levels are cute and colorful as usual and there's the Yustas owl to find in every one. The plot is thin, someth. about veggies and residents and you definitely don't start off in unfamiliar territory. Settings are very basic: turn off tutorials, music, ambients and custom pointer. There's a level guide but I found it useless in the first four levels. Had to dial back hard mode to normal just to get moving. I might try it later in hard mode again but it's not looking likely right now. Good luck!
The levels were slow-paced while not being rewarding throughout. The levels were quite simple from the start, but they seemed to drag. I felt like I kept waiting for things to grow or be delivered by the train. There wasn't always something to do.
Of all the Golden Rao; games, this is the worst.
