About
This game was originally a student-made project. It's still technically a prototype, but it was complete enough and I had to move on to another school project. I also uploaded this game here to Steam just to learn how to get something on here for any of my future projects, which is another reason why it's free!
Contrary to what the Settings menu says, Settings are not coming soon. I unfortunately lost the original project files and therefore won't be able to revisit this project, at least in this form. Maybe a sequel of sorts one day, but for now this prototype has served it's purpose for me.
Thanks for playing!

You are a bow-carrying person with a large, red pompadour who likes to jump on top of mushrooms, shoot or avoid monsters, collect large gold coins and find exits from cavernous but rectangular rooms in GINGER SHROOM JOURNEY, a 2D platformer by GoldHercules. 2D platforming is a gaming genre that has been around since the days of Nintendo's breakout classic video game, "Mario Bros." The basics of the genre hasn't changed dramatically over the decades and people who have played that game would not have a difficult time adapting to their more modern successors, either. In GINGER SHROOM JOURNEY (GSJ for short), you play as a nameless bow-carrying person with a large red pompadour. Your goal is to reach the exit of the level. Standing in your way are obstacles, such as monsters that move about and spikes (that are stationary), each of which will kill you if you touch them. You're not defenseless; You have a bow-and-arrow and can shoot and kill the monsters. Jumping on top of mushrooms causes your character to bounce as though they were on a trampoline, allowing your character to reach heights that they would otherwise not have access to with a normal jump. On your quest for the exit to the level, your character has the opportunity to collect gold coins. When you are killed, either by touching a monster or a set of spikes, you lose all of the coins that you have collected. I will be the first to admit that I'm just not into 2D platformers; They are not one of my preferred genres of gaming. As a result, perhaps I am not the intended audience for this game. However, if you don't attempt to expand your horizons then those horizons eventually shrinks down to nothing. The presentation of the game was adequate enough. The game is presented with pixel-art graphics and those graphics were fine enough for the game. There didn't seem to be any graphics that were out of place or looked as though they belonged to a different art style. The chiptune music was also completely adequate for the game, neither memorable nor annoying. There is no story to the game; I don't know the main character's name or exactly why the character is in an otherwise dungeon setting trying to collect gold coins and shoot monsters. Most action games don't need a compelling plot or sophisticated character arcs; Yet a compelling story can sometimes compensate for a game's shortcomings in other areas... And this game is not exactly without its faults. For starters, I have no clue why my character is collecting coins at all; They don't seem to perform any service other then to make a number on the user interface increase. Can I buy lives with these coins? Do they open up a secret area? Buy a better bow and arrow? As soon as I realized that collecting coins were worthless, I decided to just head straight for the exit every time. Another curious game mechanic is that, sometimes, the game zooms in on the character. As a result of this close-up, you can't see what you're jumping down or up into, causing you to be killed. Although you have infinite lives, this mechanic is still annoying and didn't compel me to want to play further. The game is still in a state of development; Pressing the 'options' button from the main menu displays a message that there are no options. Although having an options menu is not necessary (hence the name, 'options'), it would have been nice to have in its v1.0 release. Admittedly, my tolerance for 2D platformers is limited and this game didn't hold my interest for very long. Although the game's presentation and gameplay are technically competent, the levels became sufficiently harder quickly enough that I soon quit at level eight. What eroded my interest was that there were no new mechanics besides the mushrooms acting as trampolines for your character. It's a nice mechanic but it was the only one worth mentioning as all others are staples of the genre (such as shooting at monsters, roving monsters and spikes that kill you). There was no story whatsoever - Am I collecting these coins because I'm a treasure hunter? Merely exploring a dungeon? Saving a damsel in distress? When your game doesn't compel players to continue playing, a story sometimes can compensate for that lack of interest and there was no story here. However, I am giving this game a very weak recommendation despite my grievances with it. The game is free and, in this modern age of bloated gaming, is 'only' around 86 megs in size. The game is graphically competent and played sufficiently well for its genre. My personal recommendations would be to do something worthwhile with the coins to compel people to collect them or to remove the coins altogether and to also allow players to see where they are going and not make 'leaps of faith.' My Ginger Shroom Journey was rather short but 2d platformer enthusiasts will probably have better luck and enjoyment from this title.
