I want to like this game, I do. Actually, I want to love it, and if I was just going off the first two thirds of the game, I'm certain I would. But that's the problem - by the author's own admission, they lost interest in the game toward the end, and it shows. The wonderful writing from the start of the game fades away, replaced with pieces that feel forced, or even in a couple of places just placeholder texts that were never replaced. The entire ending feels shallow, and that's so sad when the first part of the game made you feel so connected to the characters. I hope the author decides to revisit this piece and update the lacking sections, because they're clearly talented, but until they do this game is just a sad example of an author releasing a piece they lost interest in.
This one is a little rough, and by rough I mean there are some bugs and grammatical issues. Stuff like referencing someone seeing you in a previous scene but they didn't, or getting into an infinite loop where you can replay the same scene repeatedly until you decide to leave it; minor stuff. It's also very very good. You learn about the family you're haunting and your own past, and there's drama, love, humor... It's really enjoyable. I think the best part by far is that the author didn't skimp on the epilogue. It's quite long and lays out how things turn out for everyone.

>start out with the full intention of gaslighting the family >don't care about "escaping", i'm gonna have fun with this >keep cleaning up their trash because its my house >start using the family the to indirectly figure out cause of death >get annoyed seeing a dysfunctional family causing a fuss in my peaceful house >my attempts to help them stop destroying themselves actually scare them more than me pranking them >don't want them to leave because i'd be bored without somebody to play tricks on >stop a home invasion to keep them alive and convince them to stay
>accidentally get dad killed in a mexican standoff, wonder why I feel bad about getting him killed when they were just a means to an end
>make the family prematurely age from stress, feel slightly bad about it >realise i'm a tsundere ghost but it doesn't matter because I get to be a buddy cop with a cool excorcist dude and continue to mess with people with ghost powers
First of: the time I have in the game is not accurate. I've played it completely through on my phone multiple times, which of course doesn't show up on Steam. Now to the actual review: Hm. This is a bit complicated. On the one hand, I definitely enjoy the story and the characters. The writing is good and I don't really have any complaints. Just based on that, I would definitely recommend this game. However, the technical aspects are very unpolished. I'll try to keep the examples spoiler free but no promises. Choices that you have already made don't consistently get grayed out. [strike]At the party you can keep repeating the scenes with the different groups despite having seen them already. This lead to me seeing the bathroom scene with the girls twice.[/strike] Edit: This particular example has been fixed. The issue itself remains at other points however. Occasionally you get multiple reactions to one choice that clearly are responses to all available choices. Samantha at one point answers first to my initial choice and then on the same page says something completely unrelated which seems to correlate to the second and third choice options. Edit: I haven't encountered this on my last playthrough. Might be fixed. Sometimes you just skip to an unconnected scene (which is very clearly not on purpose because usually there are transition segments). Edit: I haven't encountered this on my last playthrough. Might be fixed. There are also continuity errors. I picked the man as my spouse but after he received a certain call, the woman showed up, [strike]repeated the information as if she was revealing it for the first time[/strike] and stated that I was married to her. Edit: the information repeat was fixed, the marriage error remains as of now. Generally I'd recommend going through dialogue options in order since they're often nonsensical otherwise and contain information you do not have yet. Occasionally there also formatting errors, like the markup tags for italics showing up and the text then not being formatted properly anymore. Something that really annoys me and a spoiler for the end of the game:
Every ending I have reached so far described either my spouse, Michael or both as dead even if they were never killed and later showed up alive in the epilogue.
So, overall, I'd tentatively recommend it, hoping the game gets updated with some fixes soon. Compared to some other games like this it's quite short but the choices don't feel nearly as frustrating and constraining as in some games. I hope it gets improved on and I'll be able to recommend it without hesitation. Edit: clearly, this game is getting some fixes. I hope someone actually goes through it again and it improves further.
Decisions loops back on themselves, paragraphs are repeated on the same page. Game seems to forget my choices almost immediately once the scene ends or even worse, it thinks I made a different choice previously and so gives me a scene or dialog that does not even correspond to what choice I made. Its in a poor state despite its interesting premise.
༺𓆩💀𓆪༻⋆༺𓆩🪦𓆪༻⋆༺𓆩👻𓆪༻
I enjoyed a lot the characters, and how variables of events happening impacted on other events and in their fates at the epilogues as well As a Ghost our actions can carry consequences leading to different outcomes, and I love when interactive fiction lets us choose and explore that, building them with our interactions allong the way The protagonist being able to
manipulate and shape other characters RO's, burdens, the way they feel about us, are all interesting twists, that together bake different results, be a happy ending or a distressed sad one by some very different reasons.
The only thing that I felt a bit like: "I wish I could do more of that" , is
using the Ghost powers to act in a hostile/violent manner in more occasions haha, like we can do with the exorcist, and I wasn't able to unleash much of my wrath on the main culprit too (Violet), but don't get me wrong, the author did a good job on me hating that b!tch and feeling heartbroken for the protagonist loved one, so ngl I was craving for more hostile interaction towards the antagonist, we do help Lily take her down... but I was hoping to stomp more on her lol But still a great boss fight put together there, you get the feeling of it being like a true life death situation for the characters, things felt like they are at stake and I was tense/immersed while reading it.
🚪🪓 Veredict: A great premisse with a nice execution, good character development, plenty of choices and paths with different endings. So the experience of playing this game was great and fun, it felt like...
Durham: Become Human
You will discover how Ghosts are capable both of empathy and wrath...
Not for me. Some kind of detective story about your own death. Nothing to catch my attention and make me care about who I was or the people in the house. Game play wise it is Choose a person or room, choose from the list that follows on the next page things to do. Sometimes you get to go through the whole list, sometimes you only get to do two or three things before the scene changes, and you never know which is going to be the case. If you like games where you know nothing and have to randomly pick through offered things to do in hopes of learning something, you might like this. Personally I prefer my IF stories to actually have a story to be a part of, not be painfully pieced together one random choice after another. As Always YMMV.
That was a fun story! I quite enjoyed it! Bought the game thanks to the demo, gotta appreciate when games have a demo.
Suppose I just couldn't get into this one. The concept is cool but the writing was a bit too utilitarian for me and the actual goings on in the text weren't very interesting either. This feels like a game that would be a bit of fun to kill a few hours with and I can certainly see some potential in changing the lives of the characters but it all just seems a bit boring.
