Was a lot of fun! I think the price is more than reasonable. My only critique (and this is silly) is that the game would benefit a lot if there was a bit more content. Was able to nearly 100% the game in less than 45 mins. Also the writing was kind of nuts. Like I don't know what's going on or what it's about but I loved being a lil gear fella.
Took about 45 minutes to play through it all. The metroidvania aspect is lacking, there's only a single metroidvania ability upgrade to find, every other upgrade is purely combat enhancing. It's pretty basic and on the level of free itch io games, but for a little microvania somewhat in the vein of Bloody Hell I found it pretty chill to play, no real complaints. Games like this leave me with a feeling of almost indifference.
fun little 45 minute game.
Engaging enough bite-sized game that captures the feeling of exploration
Overall very good game, decent challenge.
Gears of Dissent is an action-adventure game developed and published by Jacob Gislason that focuses on delivering a complete and engaging experience without demanding dozens of hours from the player. Built around exploration, combat, and environmental storytelling, the game presents a compact journey that can be completed in only a few hours, yet it attempts to make every moment meaningful through carefully designed progression and discovery. Rather than relying on endless objectives or repetitive content, it embraces a focused structure that encourages players to immerse themselves in its world from beginning to end. The game's setting revolves around a mysterious environment filled with secrets, hidden paths, and fragments of lore waiting to be uncovered. Exploration plays a significant role throughout the adventure, rewarding players who take the time to investigate their surroundings instead of simply rushing toward the next objective. The world is designed to inspire curiosity, with various areas containing clues and narrative details that gradually reveal the larger picture behind the game's events. This approach gives the experience a stronger sense of atmosphere and encourages players to engage with the environment on a deeper level. Combat serves as one of the central pillars of gameplay. Encounters require players to learn enemy patterns, react to threats, and make effective use of their abilities. The battles are designed to provide a steady challenge without becoming overwhelming, creating a balance that allows both exploration-focused players and action enthusiasts to remain invested. As players progress, they gain access to new upgrades and tools that expand their combat options, helping maintain a sense of growth throughout the campaign. This progression system gives purpose to exploration and rewards continued engagement with the game's mechanics. One of the more appealing aspects of Gears of Dissent is its commitment to player progression. The upgrade system allows players to strengthen their character while unlocking additional capabilities that make both exploration and combat more satisfying. The sense of advancement feels meaningful because upgrades directly impact how players interact with the world. This design choice helps maintain momentum across the adventure and prevents the experience from feeling static despite its relatively short runtime. The game's presentation emphasizes atmosphere over spectacle. Visual design focuses on creating an intriguing world that complements the themes of mystery and discovery. Environmental details help establish the tone, while the overall art direction supports the sense of venturing through an unfamiliar place filled with unanswered questions. The soundtrack and audio design further reinforce immersion, providing an appropriate backdrop that enhances exploration and combat sequences without overpowering them. Because the game is intentionally concise, some players may wish for additional content or a longer campaign. However, its shorter length can also be viewed as one of its strengths. The adventure avoids unnecessary filler and remains focused on delivering a complete experience with a clear beginning, middle, and end. In an era where many games stretch their content far beyond what is necessary, Gears of Dissent benefits from its willingness to remain compact and concentrated. Overall, Gears of Dissent succeeds as a focused indie action-adventure experience that combines exploration, combat, progression, and lore into a streamlined package. Its mysterious world, rewarding upgrade system, and emphasis on discovery create an enjoyable journey that respects the player's time while still offering meaningful engagement. Although players seeking a massive open-world adventure may find it brief, those looking for a polished and thoughtfully designed indie experience will likely appreciate what it offers. Rating: 6/10
Very fun and simple game! my only complaints would be that I wish there was a reload button and maybe some of the bosses could attack a little less often so I have a chance to at least heal one gear. Overall it is a great experience for a quick game. The worldbuilding is a little wild but it is still really interesting and draws you into the world.
Good game, do wish there was controller though.
