New Negative Review 26 August 2024 = Gangsta Underground : The Poker was a free VR game. It is a Now Loading, Forever in a dark room simulator. Might be looking for a server out there that has been turned off. Do Not bother to download now. Old Positive Review 26 June 2020 = Gangsta Underground : The Poker is a free VR game. It worked on my HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has only a Single player mode, that you have to work your way through 5 gangsters playing poker. The environment looks cool. The hand ranking sheet is hard to read. You need to know how to play this kind of poker. I think someone said in a review that you can look at your opponents cards by looking under the table. CONS: - You will be seeing your death a lot. - The tutorial is buggy as heck, and completing the Tutorial is the first quest you have to complete. - You don't know if the computer is cheating. Try this game if you like playing Poker, but there are other Poker playing games in VR that are better than this.
Impossible to play anything. Stuck at loading screen...'Now Loading'....nothing load...
"Gangsta Underground : The Poker" is a rather poorly made VR "poker" experience, a bit like Poker Night at the Inventory 2, except without any interesting characters or banter, and somewhat poorly done VR exclusivity (another reviewer dutifully pointed out this is so badly made you can glitch around slightly and see other players cards). So, like it says on the box, you play poker with some bland "unsavoury" bad guys (with a bit of a twist at the end). It's an underwhelming experience due to lack of polish and overall poor technical implementation. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 12 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
ಠ_ಠ TL;DC (Too Long; Don't Care): There's not much here, but at least you're not paying money for it. Gangsta Underground allows you to play poker in smoky basements with shady characters in VR, but it doesn't offer much more than the aesthetic aspect and the fact that it's free. Your opponents are all stone-faced criminals, who don't as much as twitch when playing. There's no apparent tells, no idle banter like you might see in "Poker Night at the Inventory", and aside from looking like random rough guys that you'll be shooting in the face, there's no personality to any of them. There's dramatically long pauses while the AI decides whether to fold or raise that just drag out the game. There's a lot of missing functionality and bugs in this game. ಠ_ಠ There's a 'Pawn Shop' location where you can go and buy little toys and items to flavor your character. It features a 'Buy Random Box' that you can buy, but the box is completely empty. What's more, there's no boundary checking, so you can keep spamming this option to drive your money count into the negative for no penalty. ಠ_ಠ The other player's cards can be seen if you clip your head through the table. ಠ_ಠ There's no way to adjust or re-center the view after a scene is loaded, or raise/lower the height of the table, so it's possible to be forced into uncomfortable playing positions. ಠ_ಠ Shooting one of the gangster characters seems to always require two shots, even if you hit them right between the eyes at point blank range. ಠ_ಠ The gun's alignment with Index Knuckles controllers feels off. ಠ_ಠ Selecting chips or the cards is a little finicky and could use more work. ಠ_ಠ There really needs to be a way to turn off the floating CCTV above the opponent's head. It's obnoxious. With work, Gangsta Underground could be good. In its current state, it's just a free demo.
