Gambonanza

Fun roguelike that is rediculously hard due to some downright sadistic mechanics it is still fun and I lean positive. Without spoiling there is basically one boss where you have to eat damage for multiple turns without any counterplay, why the devs though this was anything other than an unfun mechanic is beyond me. There are major issues as far as balance, due to the player not scaling and being rather starved of gold compared to how strong and unfair the enemy can feel the higher you go. In addition, you often find yourself with limited options at synergies when you unlock all sorts of random gambits. I feel like the devs overthought the long term replay value and overshot the difficulty. At the end of the days it is a play rather than skip. Just hoping they would replace some of the more limp gambits for more powerful synergies to the player.

This is a genuinely good game. It has its own identity, it's unique, creative and above all fun. The main issue is that it still needs a bit more balancing so that runs feel fairer and more consistent. However, the game is still relatively new, so there is plenty of room for it to improve through future updates. I also think many reviews judge it too heavily against Balatro. Gambonanza is clearly Balatro-inspired, it is not trying to imitate Balatro directly. It approaches the concept in its own way and offers a distinct experience. Not to mention, out of all the Balatro-inspired games I have seen or played, Gambonanza comes closest to recreating the feeling I had during my first few hours with Balatro: constantly discovering new possibilities, experimenting with unfamiliar mechanics, and gradually understanding how much control the game actually gives you. I completely disagree with reviews claiming that the gameplay is too restrictive, that pieces are lost from “seemingly safe” positions, or that one mistake unfairly destroys an otherwise successful run. To be honest, much of that sounds like a skill issue. The game is not even particularly difficult once you understand its rules, including for someone who is not experienced with chess. The permadeath mechanic is something you are expected to consider when positioning your pieces. If a piece is lost, it usually is not because the game arbitrarily punished you; it is because you failed to account for the consequences of the position. That is part of the strategy. I also disagree that the format limits your options or forces you into an unfun playstyle. If anything, Gambonanza makes chess more approachable by allowing you to modify its rules through Gambits and construct strategies that would never exist in ordinary chess. You are not merely following traditional chess principles, you are creating new rules and advantages that are under your own control. The game certainly needs more balancing, especially when it comes to consistency, piece availability, and the strength of certain Gambits. But describing its central mechanics as fundamentally undercooked or claiming that it is simply failing to imitate Balatro misses what the game is actually trying to do. All in all, the game is original and entertaining, so it's worth the money. It is already good, and it has the potential to become even better. Personally, I'm sure this will be a great game with overwhelmingly positive reviews in less than a year from now :))
