Gallic Wars: Battle Simulator
Polecam.
Gallic Wars: Battle Simulator, developed by MadGamesmith and published by WIG Publishing, is a tactical strategy game that merges lighthearted battle simulation with roguelike elements. Released in late 2020, the game places players in command of a small band of Gallic warriors, challenging them to hold their own against the disciplined legions of Rome. With its combination of historical inspiration, cartoonish charm, and unpredictable combat mechanics, the game aims to offer a unique strategy experience, though its execution delivers mixed results. The gameplay centers around deploying units on the battlefield and observing their interactions rather than micromanaging every action. Players position their troops, select formations, and initiate combat, but once the battle begins, the outcome depends on the AI-controlled units’ behavior. This approach emphasizes spectacle over tactical precision, often resulting in chaotic, unpredictable skirmishes. While this can lead to amusing and surprising outcomes, it can also feel frustrating for players seeking a more calculated strategy experience, as the lack of detailed unit stats or clear cause-and-effect mechanics reduces the sense of control and predictability. The visual presentation leans heavily into a cartoony aesthetic inspired by classic Gallic comics, reminiscent of Asterix and Obelix. Characters are exaggerated and stylized, with ragdoll physics providing humorous, often over-the-top animations during battles. While the graphics contribute to the game’s comedic tone, the simplicity of the models and environments may feel underwhelming to players accustomed to more polished modern strategy games. Nevertheless, the bright, colorful landscapes and whimsical character design help give the game a distinctive personality and make the chaotic combat entertaining to watch. Roguelike mechanics are woven into the game’s campaigns, introducing a degree of unpredictability and replayability. Each run can present different battlefield conditions, unit compositions, and enemy behavior. While this adds variety, the difficulty can spike abruptly, and without a deeper progression system, repeated attempts may feel punishing rather than rewarding. Players looking for meaningful advancement or evolving tactical options may find the game’s systems underdeveloped, as most challenges revolve around managing randomness rather than leveraging strategic depth. The audio design complements the game’s tone, featuring light, whimsical music that matches the playful visual style. Sound effects during combat, from clashing weapons to exaggerated battle grunts, enhance the humor and chaotic energy of the skirmishes. While the soundtrack and effects support the overall atmosphere, they remain functional rather than standout, serving primarily to underscore the game’s comedic approach rather than to immerse players in a rich auditory experience. Despite its limitations, Gallic Wars: Battle Simulator succeeds in creating a game that is fun to experiment with, especially for those who enjoy the unpredictability of physics-based combat. The humor, aesthetic charm, and chaotic skirmishes offer entertainment value, particularly in short bursts or casual play sessions. However, the lack of strategic depth, uneven difficulty, and limited replay incentives prevent it from achieving the engagement and satisfaction found in more robust tactical strategy titles. In conclusion, Gallic Wars: Battle Simulator is an amusing and lighthearted take on the RTS and roguelike genres, delivering chaotic combat and whimsical visuals that are entertaining to watch and play. While it may appeal to fans of humorous, physics-driven strategy games, those seeking a deeper, more rewarding tactical experience may find it lacking. Its strengths lie in its charm, unpredictability, and comedic presentation, making it a game best enjoyed for short, experimental sessions rather than long-term strategic mastery. Rating: 5/10
This is great! Its kinda like No plan B but involves barbarians killing Roman soldiers. You should make a game like this or improve this game to have other sides and factions, random missions, a campaign/mission editor and other things just like NO PLAN B.
A mixed bag with mostly good.
It took a while to get the hang of it but when I did it was a great but very short experience. The game is not broken but it is much harder than it may appear. The game has some achievements you need to grind for but they are not hard to get. The music is not bad but sounds very uninspired and if somebody searched medieval in a soundbank. The last critique I have is that it should be rogue-like and not a rogue-lite. Overall a good but short and hard experience 8/10.
