From Head to Toe has a nice comfortable atmosphere to it. You are revisiting the town where you grew up and hanging out with a childhood friend. The game does a great job of having a realistic back and forth dialogue. One could argue that not a lot happens during the short run of the game but I think many of us have had encounters that mimic what happens in the game and it’s that realism that helps connect you to the story. It could have used more flesh on it’s bones but as is it does a good job of telling it’s tale as well as trying to provide actual game play. It is a visual novel at heart with you picking dialogue choices but you do have to walk your character around and perform certain actions. The walking was very awkward, almost a rhythm game which I hate those. I think the developers knew that this wouldn’t be everyone’s favourite type of thing because they provided an auto walk function. Other times you have to use the mouse to swing back and forth; have a snow ball fight; etc. These are minor things but it was nice to see them try to incorporate some game play into this especially with the short run time. The art style was very nice as was the music and the voice acting. I played From Head to Toe on Linux using Proton. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs or glitches. You can’t save at all but it is a very short game. Alt-Tab works. There is one graphics setting along with your resolution option. The game ran with fantastic performance. Graphics Engine: Unity Disk Space Used: 527 MB Input Used: Mouse and Keyboard Game Settings Used: Fantastic, 1920x1080 GPU Usage: 10-20 % VRAM Usage: 1191-1258 MB CPU Usage: 11-17 % RAM Usage: 3.1 GB Frame Rate: 137-142 FPS I would easily recommend this to fans of visual novels or even those who just want a short but comfy story. I finished the game in 16 minutes but for a free game I can’t complain about it too much. It could have used more depth but it does manage to make an impact with what it had. I felt that compared to the developer’s other game Lozenge this had more of a conclusion to it although I would recommend checking that out as well. From Head to Toe
I played From Head to Toe the day after playing Thing-in-Itself, from the same developers. Both are described as short interactive stories by the developers. As I was pretty impressed with the uniqueness of Thing-in-Itself, I was hoping for a similar short story experience with this too. Unfortunately, From Head to Toe just didn’t do anything for me. It’s a very short game, no more than 15 minutes long, and as with their previous title, it’s all about the story. While the story was somewhat relatable, I don’t feel it was told particularly well, and it didn’t bring out any feelings. This may have been, at least in part, due to the player interactions that were forced upon me. The interactions were just awkward. It felt like they were simply there so the game could be labelled an “interactive story”. It felt menial and, quite frankly, annoying. Thankfully there was an auto-walk function which helped alleviate some of the pointless clicking, but not all of it. I found the voice acting to be very nice and relaxing, but the story was too bland to give what they were saying any meaning, and failed to evoke any feelings. It came close towards the end, but then the pointless interactions kicked in again, destroying any impact it was building up to. The very end was definitely the best moment though, and the only time I actually appreciated interacting with the game. The graphics were nice, and I feel they fit well with the story and dialogue. The music was also very nice at creating a relaxing and soothing atmosphere. It’s also free, so it does have that going for it. It’s a shame that, after such a unique experience with their first game, From Head to Toe just doesn’t deliver for me. While it’s only a short story, the unnecessary player interactions ruined any chance of ever enjoying it. It’s free, and it’s incredibly short, so there’s no real harm in checking it out. Perhaps others will appreciate it more than I did. i had to let it go... kudos for the voice acting but it didn't invoke much nostalgia plus the very short storytelling is just not impactful enough for pitching a 15 minute visual novel with mouse interactions which could have been a plus point yet the swinging sounds made me lose focus on the dialogues.
