The game is a more stripped-down version of Shadowgate, meaning you can't hit yourself with a hammer and die, but you still have to go room to room collecting items and solving puzzles through trial and error. The music needs some work and just didn't feel creepy or tense at all. The art, puzzles, and exploration are all quite good. I bought this based on the still frames on the store page and don't regret parting with my $3. I'm cautiously optimistic that we WILL get more in the series, and that will be a good thing as the dev has a real talent for retro horror point-and-click goodness.
A fun tribute to the Point & Click days of old. Clearly influenced by Shadowgate and presented in a similarly pixelated style, From Beyond does a lot of things right in a very niche genre. The art style does double duty as it obscures certain elements making you have to work a bit to sort everything out. I was able to complete the game (but not 100% the achievements) despite completely overlooking three interactions. I can't say if it was intentionally designed that way or not, but it was satisfying to not get locked out of progressing due to some of the stickier bits. If you're not a Point & Click curious gamer, move along, but if you are this is a surprisingly good love letter and from what I read the beginning of a bigger project as well.

A short and fun game in the style of NES Shadowgate and similar games like Deja Vu/Uninvited. On the plus side there are sometimes multiple places to get a needed key item, and an experimental timed mechanic used late in the game. On the negative side the script is sometimes overly pedantic with minor grammatical errors. It's marketed as a prologue which seems correct -- there is enough game here to play but not enough game to encompass more than about 2 hours of play. The setting and theme are consistent, strong, and engaging.
It's sad, but despite wanting to love this game it's simply not fun. The pixel art is okay, nothing spectacular, the sound design though gets grating. It's so overreliant on trial and error, compounded with navigation sometimes seeing one mouse click as 2 so that it feels like padding. It's a little facsimile snuffbox of a NES adventure game, one sneeze and you're done.
The best Shadowgate-style game I've played on Steam. Mixing in the Lovecraftian stuff makes it even better. Not sure why the author has not made more games like this. We need it!
Cool game. Reminds me of an old text based adventure game.

So where's the horror? The character died because he fell through the rotten floor and that was that. I did not feel like loading the last save to try walking in a different direction / explore / continue with the story. I decided to give it another go and go to a different direction and the death I faced was random and made no sense. At this point I do not care what else there was to discover as the game just doesn't grip me.
Just like Shadowgate, I loved it. Retro point-and-click adventure, I think the $3 I paid was definitely worth the 2 hour playtime and story. I missed a note in the beginning so I restarted after beating it the first time on my own, and used a walkthrough to make sure I got everything, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.
This game does a great job at paying homage to the NES ports of the Macventure games. Overall, this one isn't too hard to complete and the steps are all logical. While I got stuck a few times, it wasn't too hard to figure things out after taking a few steps back. I would absolutely recommend this game and look forward to the next part's release.
