This is so oldschool and sophisticated! Too sophisticated for my liking, but thumbs up for all the work done on the project!
From beyond prologue is a homage to the classic macventure series known for its point and click style with a distinct unease in all of the games, which from beyond delivers a brand fresh new story! The gameplay honestly lives up decently well, its a simple point and click with puzzles to solve and lots of areas to explore, the positives of the gameplay style all the macventure games and this has, are that every room feels like there's something to do, and there's enough clues and hinting to find your way around, but this game has a particular issue in that elements sometimes aren't made apparent to the player the graphics feel too cluttered and more emphasis should be made on objects that are able to be picked up, i missed several key items and got stuck for periods at a time, but during the story and actual threats in the game it felt insanely intense, probably gave me the biggest chills out of any point and click i've tried so i give it huge props for that. The graphics as i mentioned feel too cluttered at times, i think more of the border could be sacrificed to make the game window bigger offering for more detail on each screen, but everything else looks pretty good, its not a problem of the graphics being bad, because everything which is clear and visible looks the part (especially the more eldritch looking things) i just wished everything that is intended to be clear is fully clear beyond any doubt, other than that, the game has a very eerie way of doing graphics, blood, indescribable ooze and rooms with foreboding space to add to the unsettling feel which really makes the game a great homage to the macventure series. The music has some choppy loops which absolutely needs to be fixed, but for the music itself has that vibe all the previous games do, its cosy sounding when you're safe, absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrifying when you're in danger, the death music is one of my favourites for drilling home that "its all over" feel, i absolutely love the music when its without its glitchy side effects, however. And this is a BIG however, there is something absolutely irredeemable with 1 particular sound effect, its for when an eldritch being is telepathically contacting you, it plays a loud jarring beep and flashes the screen, first off i don't really appreciate the jumpscare and second off, WHY IS IT SO DAMN LOUD!? legit it hurt my ears and made me physically jolt to yank my earphones out, i was less than impressed with it and it comes up pretty frequently throughout the game, in the end i had to simply turn down all the game volume and i think this sound effect is near 10 decibels louder than the rest of the game, genuinely this needs to be removed entirely, the jumpscare graphic of being contacted is fine, but that sound effect on people who seriously blast their music and headphones could cause genuine damage; do not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do this in video games, its not funny nor is it safe on peoples ears. Overall a good nod to the macventure games, it is still the prologue and there's a healthy bit of content although i feel the entire game revolves around a single puzzle with several smaller ones linking into it, the game has its ups and downs, im very very split down the middle for whether i like the game or not but due to it still having some good life to it, i give it a pass, but i will say: that jumpscare sound single handedly put this game astonishingly close to being not recommended.
Really great game. I want the one that comes after this.
Nice atmosphere, pixel art, and music. Most of the puzzles were fairly logical, though some items (bar stool I'm looking at you) were difficult to see and/or tough to find the hit box to click on them. Overall an enjoyable short game that only required use of a walkthrough for one or two parts. Looking forward to the sequel.
Overall, this game is very Lovecraftian, and reminds me very much of Lovecraft's stories. The story is thick with mystery and mythos, and quite a few references are fun to spot for those in the know. The pixel art is very pretty, and haunting at times, as are the story and clues found throughout the journey. Hope to see even more of this in the future!
The worst part about this game is that there isn't a sequel or plans for more entries in this vein.
Cool game
Not as long as I expected, ended up using some of the walkthrough guide but still enjoyed it.
This game does a great job at paying homage to the NES ports of the Macventure games. Overall, this one isn't too hard to complete and the steps are all logical. While I got stuck a few times, it wasn't too hard to figure things out after taking a few steps back. I would absolutely recommend this game and look forward to the next part's release.
