Perhaps if I play this game long enough, I will stop wishing it was Time Pilot. I wish it were Time Pilot. It's a top-down shooter - endless planes to shoot, challenge set by a deliberately limited screen size. Missions to complete. Stars to earn, feeling of progression. Lots of power ups (some of which are not good). Lots of planes to unlock (some of which are not good). I feel like the developer didn't spend enough time playing the game to realise - unlocking a faster plane is not such a good thing when you have a limited screen and bullets that are too weak to shoot down an enemy quickly. And that some of the power-ups act as a hindrance. The "move a mouse pointer with a joystick to navigate menus" system is really not great. It breaks flow at the end of every game. I know it is not generally helpful to describe a work in terms of the things it is not, but I so dearly wish this game were Time Pilot. But retaining this game's mission and unlockables structure, which I like because it keeps the game fresh. All in all, it's a very reasonable game for its price. For that, I give it an overall thumbs-up. But it's not brilliant.
Shoot all the planes! Fly everywhere! Complete all the tasks! In all seriousness, I voted for this on Greenlight and glad it made it to steam and worth the wait too! It's a cute bullet hell game that you can't help but keep playing and shooting. It's addicting to play, challenging too for personal goals, while not frustrating or overwhelming. Something to play on the side when waiting for someone or something. I do have to give a word of caution: beware of going full-screen. It crashed my game, and when I try to boot it up, it would crash instantly because it would go to full-screen. I don't know what's causing that problem, but best to avoid that. If you do find yourself in that situtation, here's a thread I made for a solution thanks to the dev. At times the plane may not be visible, this is more or less a graphic bug in the game. Simply hit the dodge button and it'll appear as normal. Feels like a crime getting this game for a $1 when it feels like a $2 or $3 game. ----- Check out more games I see that deserve more attention from my curator group: BluePaw's Underrated Games List Join and/or follow if you wish.

Simple but great fun shoot em up. Collect power ups, blow things out of the sky, collect stars to unlock more planes. Overall about 3 hours of gameplay before you unlock everything. An excellent bargain for $.99. I got way more fun out of it than that!

Frequent Flyer is a badly made 2D top down bullet hell/shoot 'em up where you fly around 2D retro pixel WW2 style planes and shoot waves of stuff. Engrossing... it's no wonder this is an old, dead genre. Frequent Flyer isn't adding anything new or interesting to the mix, this is just a derivative bit of amateur shovelware. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately ethical behaviour and genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Comically, the game was written in Java (I'm not making this up). Talk about not using the right tools for the job. Might as well try to bake a cake with a screwdriver. The extremely poor choice of game engine here is a major contributing factor to the defects with the game. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. Frequent Flyer has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for unlocking the first airplane you can use, trivial to achieve, but less than 3 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 3 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother to played the game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Frequent Flyer is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Highly addictive shooter in the Time Pilot mold. CONTROLS: Controller, Keyboard, or Combo of the two. GAME PLAY: You start off with two planes unlocked, but as you fly you pick up stars which you spend to unlock more planes. The planes start off in the WWII era, but you progress through to the jet era. There are many power-ups to unlock. I've now unlocked them all. MODES: Missions Infinite Organized Time Attack DIFFICULTIES: Easy Medium Hard SCORING: More points the harder the difficulty. Medium 1.5X Score. LEADERBOARD: Scores and times. No initials or usernames though. Mere words don't do this game justice, so I recorded a play video. Well, I was going to anyway. SOUNDS: Music and Sound Effects Nice retro sounds. Both Music and Sound Effects can be raised or lowered separate of one another. ACHIEVEMENTS: Yes. 23. CARDS: YES! FAVORITES WORTHY: YES! That's where I have it. It amazing that such a good game is only $1. PLAY VIDEO: No Commentary. Just uploaded. The fist half of the video I shoot with the keyboard and steer with the controller (Xbox 360). I then switched to using the controller exclusively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaAcz_Vz4R4
