Its like playing Othello, but its on Steam
I have over 1500 hours in this game... if I could describe it in one word.... TRASH.... DO NOT BUY, this game is honestly terrible. I literally have never lost a game so it has nothing to do with that.
Othello Let’s Go, developed and published by Studio Amateur, is a modern digital adaptation of one of the most enduring abstract strategy games ever made. Also known as Reversi, Othello has long been celebrated for its elegant simplicity and deep tactical potential. Studio Amateur’s version brings that timeless design to PC with a focus on accessibility, functionality, and clean presentation. Rather than attempting to reinvent or overcomplicate the formula, Othello Let’s Go aims to refine it, offering a polished and intuitive experience for both newcomers and seasoned strategists who appreciate the purity of classic board gaming. From the outset, the game establishes a minimalist aesthetic that perfectly suits its subject matter. The board design is crisp and easy to read, with high-contrast black and white discs that make every move visually distinct. The interface is unobtrusive, allowing the player’s focus to remain entirely on the shifting patterns of the board. This simplicity extends to the sound design, which features subtle effects and ambient tones rather than bombastic music or unnecessary distractions. It’s a serene experience—one that emphasizes thought and concentration over spectacle. The visual clarity and restraint are deliberate choices that reflect Studio Amateur’s commitment to honoring the original spirit of Othello: an intellectual contest where precision and foresight matter more than presentation. Gameplay remains faithful to the traditional rules of Othello while introducing several thoughtful digital enhancements. Players take turns placing discs on an 8x8 grid, flipping their opponent’s pieces by surrounding them horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Victory goes to the player who holds the majority of pieces when the board is filled. While this structure is simple to grasp, mastering it requires deep strategic thinking, as each move not only changes the board immediately but also alters the possibilities for future turns. Othello Let’s Go captures that ebb and flow perfectly, with smooth animations and instant feedback that make every placement feel satisfying. The game’s artificial intelligence offers eight distinct difficulty levels, accommodating complete beginners as well as players looking for a serious challenge. The lower tiers allow for relaxed, instructional play, while the higher ones deliver punishing opposition that demands long-term planning and pattern recognition. Beyond traditional play, Othello Let’s Go enriches its offering with several additional modes. The most substantial of these is the Endgame Challenge mode, which features dozens of puzzle-like scenarios designed to test a player’s ability to find optimal moves in specific board positions. These challenges encourage careful analysis and reward players who understand the subtleties of board control, parity, and corner dominance—the strategic foundations that define expert-level Othello. Another creative addition is the Lights Out mode, which reimagines the board as a tile-flipping puzzle, offering a lighter, more casual diversion from competitive play. These inclusions give the package more variety and depth, ensuring it appeals not only to those who enjoy competitive matches but also to players seeking meditative solo challenges. One of the strongest aspects of Othello Let’s Go lies in its accessibility and customization. The interface allows players to adjust window size, resolution, and sound settings, ensuring smooth play on a range of systems. Multiple languages are supported, broadening the game’s reach to an international audience. Local multiplayer is also included, allowing two players to face off on the same device—a valuable feature in an era when many board game adaptations neglect in-person play. While there is no online matchmaking, the local mode captures the social spirit of traditional Othello sessions, where two players sit side by side, anticipating each other’s moves in quiet concentration. The inclusion of undo options, hints, and move previews makes the experience welcoming to newcomers while still maintaining the depth that advanced players crave. Despite its strengths, Othello Let’s Go is not without limitations. The lack of online multiplayer might disappoint those hoping for competitive play against a wider community, and the overall presentation, while elegant, could feel overly spartan to players accustomed to more dynamic visuals in modern strategy titles. The content, though robust for its price, is ultimately constrained by the simplicity of the core design. Once players have mastered the AI and completed the puzzle challenges, there are few incentives beyond the intrinsic satisfaction of improving one’s skill. However, this restraint is part of what makes the game appealing—it does not try to pad its length with unnecessary systems or gimmicks. Instead, it embraces the focused, minimalist purity that defines the best strategy games. What sets Othello Let’s Go apart from many digital board game adaptations is the level of care put into its execution. Studio Amateur clearly understands what makes Othello timeless: the tension between simplicity and depth, the thrill of a perfect counterplay, and the intellectual satisfaction of seeing a long-term plan come to fruition. The game’s pacing allows players to think without pressure, encouraging quiet reflection. Whether played casually or at a competitive level, every match unfolds as a series of evolving patterns—a dance between logic and anticipation. The Endgame Challenge mode, in particular, reinforces the educational value of the game, helping players internalize strategies that can later be applied in live matches. In the end, Othello Let’s Go succeeds by knowing exactly what it wants to be: a faithful, refined, and approachable digital version of a strategic classic. It doesn’t rely on flashy production or modern embellishments but instead celebrates the inherent beauty of Othello’s design. Its combination of smart AI, diverse puzzle modes, and smooth local multiplayer ensures it remains engaging long after the first few matches. For players who enjoy quiet, cerebral competition or who want to sharpen their logical thinking through structured challenges, Othello Let’s Go is a thoughtful and rewarding experience. It stands as both a tribute to the enduring appeal of traditional strategy and a reminder that sometimes the simplest ideas make for the most lasting games. Rating: 8/10
