Frebbventure is a messy, janky game but it's full of love and full of ... everything actually ? Almost every level has unique interesting mechanics, the story goes way harder than it has any right to, it sports a cast of many varied characters with unique varied move set each + even more in bonus modes, like it's hard to say how much there is in this game as it tries to do EVERYTHING at times. My only real complaint would be about the pretty whatever music. If you're willing to go past it's messiness, Frebbventure is an easy recommend !
Frebbventure is a great example of what we call backwards thinking. The idea is that if you want to do something, you should create your goal first, and then work backwards from that. The goal of Frebbventure is "how can I make a combination of DBZ, Tom and Jerry, Earthworm Jim, Wario, and Sonic the Hedgehog a good video game?" The answer is probably something close to this. Frebbventure is messy and jank and not the tightest designed game in existence, but by god it is so full of heart and passion that I can do nothing less than wholeheartedly recommend it. A 2D platformer stuffed to burst with content, insane ideas, and nearly perfect execution. Holy hell, this game kicks ass. From the second you hit go, Frebbventure delights. Excellent sprite art and solid music abound, instantly setting the tone perfectly. The game looks great for a solo indie effort, with tons of awesome details in the sprite art and sound effects. I love how Frebb makes that "cartoon coconut running" sound effect when he turns around, or the comical THOOMP of him shoving shells into his rocket launcher. The game borrows liberally from all sorts of inspirations, but the core art and character design holds fast the entire game. Not a single character looks out of place or poorly designed, and the cast range from simple and elegant designs to multicoloured, mangled monstrosities. Gameplay is a whole other story. Frebb is a fairly agile and honestly overpowered character to play as, with incredible jumping speed and a dodge that is flat-out busted. Until the midgame difficulty spike kicks in, Frebb can simply leap past basically everything the game throws at him. You have a ton of health, deal great damage with your ranged options, and most enemies barely pose a threat. Instead, the game delights in giving you a huge amount of options at any one time. From an inventory menu on the map, Frebb can equip different items that radically alter his moveset. He can change out his spins for a giant sword, or stock his rocket launcher with seeker missles, giving him lots of options to tackle any situation. Level design is highly varied, and just about every obstacle course and boss has something going for it. The key word here for Frebbventure is variety. The game is bursting to the seams. Everything I just said is actually secretly one fourtieth of what this game has. The game has fourty levels. Like, thirty bosses. Drinn, Roxy and Mindstein are all playable, and each one has a unique moveset. Drinn can fly like she has the Super Cape from Super Mario World, Roxy is a slow-but-strong AOE tank that can eat enemies to refuel a flame breath attack, and Mindstein is an agile and long-ranged damage dealer equipped with a fast-firing laser pistol. Like fifteen inventory items, some of which are unique to specific characters. A randomized challenge mode for running through multiple levels as specific characters. Said mode also comes with unlocks, which include characters unique to that mode. An entire enemy bio written from all four of the main character's perspectives. Maybe ten vehicle levels (NONE of which suck, many of which are very fun). However many freaking enemies. It is ABSURD that this game is a solo effort. I feel like I was playing a game made by twenty people, not a single person. How did you even create this thing? Frebb's journey is absolutely incredible, featuring a solid cast of core characters. Frebb himself is an awesome main character, and watching his evolution from cynical loner to hero feels earned. Frebb stays edgy, confrontational and mean the entire journey, but gains a sense of responsibility and empathy to balance it out. By the end, he felt developed and three-dimensional, which is a great accomplishment for a character who so clearly draws from one-dimensional icons. Frebb's skittish ally Drinn is a fantastic foil, while the observant Dr. Mindstein and the sardonic Roxy round out the cast well. The villains Ulcethot and Rose are some of the most memorable I've seen in a game, and their rivalry and hatred with Frebb feels authentic. By the end of the game, the mutual hatred between Frebb and Rose escalates to such heights that I could not believe it. The game is also, shockingly, authentically funny! A lot of games in this style struggle with writing quality and often make jokes that don't land, but Frebbventure manages to make me laugh multiple times. The finale is... in a word, "excessive", but I loved every second of it. The game does have some flaws. As a solo indie effort, it is pretty darn jank. And that's okay! Lingering hitboxes, weird telegraphs and out-of-nowhere difficulty spikes abound. The game is also "overwritten", where characters say things in four sentences that could be said in two, or even one. Characters talk for a long, long time, and while I did say the writing was good, it can get a little overwrought. As well, the game has issues with demonstrating damage. It can be hard to know what is hitting you in the environment. The game seems to give you a ton of health to mitigate this alongside generous invulnerability frames, so its likely the dev knew this was an issue. Still, the game was easily beatable and this wasn't much of an issue. The polish is put to good use in other areas, and ultimately I felt like this was a fairly reasonable game to accomplish. While the platforming and combat is fairly loose, which might irk some people, I feel the game has a fairly high skill ceiling, and the challenge mode really emphasises skill. That said, the game does have some balance issues. I felt pretty darn overpowered through most of the game, and nothing really posed a continuous challenge. Whether that really matters is up to you, but I honestly did not care. I walked into Frebbventure expecting charm, and walked out with about twelve buckets of kino. This is why I play indie games, man. Worth every penny.
I'm GONNA FREBB MYSELF!!!!
Amazing game. This is the kind of game that is truly a hidden gem. I'll go ahead and talk about the one major negative of this game first. It's someones Sonic Underground fan game using their Sonic OCs. That just means that if you have something against a specific art style, then this game isn't for you. However, this game is the 90s/00s mascot platformer you rented from blockbuster and cant remember the name of it. It's also the 90s/00s original cartoon that aired on Toonami (or Bionix) at a weird time and no one around you remembers it and there's no record of it online, but also there's a few forum posts on neoseekers of people asking if anyone else remembers the exact same show. What I'm trying to say is this game is a fun as hell platformer from the bygone era where Coolspot and Rocket Knight have slipped in. The story is just a script from a cult classic toonami show that no one remembers and the joy of beating it makes you just want to go back and play more. I can't recommend this game enough, there simply hasn't been something like this that hits the nostalgia button in this exact way.
This game is pretty damn good, but it is somewhat janky and a little glitchy at times. Also, items that are able to change the move sets of a character is a cool idea.
An old school adventure platformer type game from the SNES/Genesis era but with loads of content to play with and heavy story full of dragon ball/DBZ references.
Alright, I decided to come back to this because I feel like I did a lazy job at leaving a true review of this game. All I did before was blindly glaze this game and don't get me wrong a lot of my options still hasn't change but I'm going to lay it out thick like I should always do when I make reviews for games I care for. So lets get into it.... ‣ Is this game worth your time? Opinion: Yes, without a second thought this game is a fat GEM that is best experienced though playing it yourself. The game play is mostly platformer stuff BUT this game does it different. From the start you get your main guy Freb then Drin after. Just from there anyone who has played a platformer game would notice how bizarrely different these characters are for your typical platformer game. Not only do they have movement options but actual fleshed out combat moves that can bleed well with the movement they have. Just from running through the main story your going to get a good feel of the main 4 but that's not it. There are more characters in the game you can play as with their own skills that change how you play the game as a whole. I think it was about 8 in total if not a bunch more. Then you can also change up how the main 4 characters work by modifying them with items you get in the overworld shop. From weapons, changing out how skills work, movement buffs, you name it and it can be used in other game modes as well. Some of these characters are just out right busted when you master them too. I would love to say more but I don't want to spoil too much. Getting a feel of the characters are simple enough to understand yet if you test out their other tool kit you can tell that it all has a learning curve that the game doesn't explain. I can't stress how much attention to detail was put into this too. The best way I can describe it is when your playing a mega man game and you learn a new busted tech like being able to dash cancel a attack, have interesting interactions with your own skills, and so on that just feels right. It's so bizarre just playing a game that feels like something that came out back when gaming companies was trying to find out what work. The colors, personality, music, the quite story telling, dialog, how the game feels and I really mean this game does sharply changes based on who you play as... I could go on. This game has a lot of love put into it and beyond the many references this game makes it's not afraid to change things up either. There are also side stuff you get to play around with. Similar to how Dave the Diver changes things up but instead of it being done in a questionably lazy way that feels like it lost what it was trying to sell it self as from the start, here Frebbventure makes it all works. One second you are playing the main platformer game of rushing to the end, next your doing a stealth section, then a open stage area where you must collect a bunch of key items before you can leave as a large monster looks for you, time attack section, gradius III section, a boat section that feels like using a tank, and like dude... There's so much here and what's crazy is none of it over stays it's welcome. All those side options are either a one and done thing or out right optional. I love what they did here sense this game never loses what it's main focus is despite the many side stuff it give you to run through. That's just a small sample of what's in the game. All that I just typed up was just scratching what this game has as a whole. Now lets get into some of the problems this game have... Bugs... Yups a few bugs. Now thank goodness it's nothing game breaking but some of the bugs you can come across are annoying. Bug 1: With two of the main characters Freb and Drin. They have unlockable weapons which drastically changes how they play, move, and so on. Problem is there is a bug where some of their attacks will just not hit for some reason. I have tested this and it's not all the various attacks you can do but some basic strikes will just not do anything. This only seems to be a problem with Freb with a greatsword and Drin with her staff. The other are fine but it may still need to be tested. Edit: So "Bug 1" seems to be fixed-ish. I can confirm the hitbox is now there BUT for some reason some attacks you do on meaty enemies and most definitely bosses would result in a crash. This may need to be looked into. Will share error message at the bottom. Bug 2: On some stages with spikes, some of the spikes just don't seem to have a hit box to them so you can pretty much run around in a few pits of spikes without taking any damage. Bug 3: ... I just figured this out the hard way just now with me updating this review... Tangent‣ Current 04/29/2026 of speaking but this game does not save your data on your steam account. It will remember you if you was to uninstall the game and reinstall but I recently got a new gaming pc and booting this game up now all my save data is gone. You can already yell how close I to balling my eyes how but don't worry. This game is in fact FUN so I can do it all again... I don't know about 100% the main story challenges again.... What ever... Back to the main review‣ Ya, if you was to do a system restart or switch computers/laptop this game is not exactly built to log your progress like that unless you was to manually yoink your save data with a flashdrive. Bug 4: Not really a bug. It's a issue with remapping the controls. So you can remap your skills like dodging, attack, special, and jump but you can not remap you arrow keys to move. Before, I played this game on a laptop with the arrow keys and on my laptop those things are a pain to use do to how they are laid out and small to press. Now I have options but I would not be shocked some other people had to tolerate something like this.. If they even tolerated it at all. Good news is this game does support controller but I still feel that it's worth pointing out for keyboard users. That's kinda it.. Beyond the difficulty sometimes feeling like it spikes up harshly, mostly when you are trying to get a perfect rank on each stage that is, everything seems well balanced and considerate based on where your skill "should" be when referring to stages. I am in the discord server. If Almy the Alien (dev) was to check my review out I do go by the same name on discord as my steam account. It might take me a bit to run through the game again but I know there are some other bugs this game has too with the extra characters. I'm sure to make a update to this review again at some point but it may depend on how much free time I can make for myself. ‣ Error Codes... i'm frebbing my venture
If you're a fan of fast platformers and challenging games, Frebb's got you covered. Pretty much every stage feels like it's been thoroughly polished. The game also has a cast of four characters to play as, each with their own fun way to play through the game. Easily the most fun game I've bought this year. Challenge mode is also where things really start to heat up, and offers a variety of unlockable characters for it.
Very good janky platformer with a lot of unique characters that substantially change how you approach each stage. If you want a run and gun, choose the doctor. If you want to fly everywhere, choose the blue water sheep thing. I’m always tired of every indie thing trying to be precision platformer or a metroidvania, so Frebbventure was a real treat. Clunky and full of variety from start to finish, each stage and boss challenge introduces something unique. The dialogue goes on for a while, similar to Freedom Planet, but I liked the art and cinematic close ups peppered throughout the experience. The characters being pissed off nihilists and hot opossums really helped. The 75% off sale price is totally worth the hours you get out of this one. I finished the main scenario without unlocking anything or trying any challenge modes in just under 6 hours, which is a great value for how lovingly crafted the experience is.
