Another came-out-of-nowhere gem in 2026.
Foreign Sun, as well as its predecessor Biomass, is a game that deserves much more publicity than it gets. The gameplay can be a little bit rough, even in the more refined game, but accessibility options make it playable even if you just wish to engage with the intriguing story and atmosphere. That being said, the Sekiro-esque clashing of beamsabres is engaging, and all enemies have clear tells and punish windows. The battles have the juice, although for my tastes there is A LOT of fighting, especially if you're going for all endings. The story and atmosphere are the main draw for me. For the longest time, what actually is going on remained out of reach, and even after 40+ hours and after seeing all lore I cannot be definitely sure of the full timeline and everything that happens. That is, in my opinion, a massive positive side to the story. There are multiple factions, and how you advance through the game affects everything. Losing certain boss battles affects which route you're taking towards the end. And each ending was well thought-out and felt earned. TL;DR: play it. Is good.
A title certainly worth picking up as an entry to biomass/foreign sun or if already familiar with biomass. Iterates fantastically on what was already an indie gem. Thought and craft has gone in to both titles and makes it a steal at the current price. Recommend to all, won't say too much about the story (spoilers aplenty) but the gameplay+ambiance will hook you. Worth getting and completing!!
I'll be real, even if the game wasn't fun (and it is), I'd have to leave a positive review based on the sheer scale alone. The amount of variability and threads I decided not to pursue and missed entirely even at the time of writing is staggering, the amount of world states must be simply massive. There are purely narrative games boasting choice and consequence that this game does on every turn, taunting you with how obviously better and fuller the other path is. In a medium where players seldom finish the games they started, this one bravely tells the player "You messed up. Get stronger, get better, do better next time." I wish I hadn't taken the dev's extremely generous offer and bought this game instead of receiving it for free - passion on this scale and level of execution deserves to be rewarded.
A very unique metroidvania with lots of lore and hidden paths. You'll find yourself discovering new timelines and locations, and experiencing consequences along the way. Almost every choice you make will effect which of the seven endings you will get, and you'll have lots of fun discovering what you can do to cause or prevent certain events. The combat is rewarding, albeit simple, and many of the weapons you'll find will have mixed amounts of usefulness. Personally I find the starter weapons to be the most useful weapons in the game, and most of the secondaries you find seem too simple or gimmicky to be of use in combat. There are a couple exceptions though, some of the weapons you find will be genuinely unique and useful. My only other gripe is that the currency (biomass) isn't very useful, as crafting has limited viability, and there few ways to upgrade your stats with it. At the same time I have to praise the game for foregoing stat allocation in favor of purely skill based gameplay. Finally I want to praise this game's artistic value. It's just incredible. Everything from the sound design to the colors makes me smile. Every press of a button, every clash of a beamsaber, and goshdarnit I love seeing the sky. The light above, the worm below, we will all be one.
This is pretty flipping awesome. I loved the last game, and I purchased this one, even though it was offered for free. This is because it is flipping awesome. Holy fk it is difficult. But... it rules.
The game is beautiful, the sound design is excellent, the story is intriguing, it's all-around very well put together and it seems strange to me that this game is not more well-known than it is. It strikes me as a difficult game. Some games are "git gud" games and this is one of them. I'm afraid I might actually get skill-locked and not be able to beat it, that happened to me with Lies of P which was also an excellent game so I wouldn't consider the difficulty a downside necessarily, but it does stand out. EDIT: I spent some time hanging out by a checkpoint and practicing against nearby enemies for a few minutes and that helped a lot. The rhythm of combat in Foreign Sun is a bit different than other games of the genre but it clicked for me eventually.
I played Biomass, and I really liked it. As far as I can see, this game is quite like Biomass gameplay-wise, and just as unforgiving. I truly find it difficult to comprehend why both Biomass and this game have so few reviews and players. It has gorgeous art, appealing soundtrack, difficult and very engaging and artistic combat... I wish more people played it.
I don't really have the eloquent words to do this game justice, except to say that it's excellent, has great atmosphere, and a facinating world. Multiple times while playing this I've come across a piece of lore that has hit me with a sudden thought about what might be going on, what the nature of things might be, in a way that I imagine must have brought a glint to my eyes, and certainly a smile to my lips. I also enjoy the combat very much, and that too has made me smile. I'm very greatful I got the chance to be a beta tester, and that I discovered it's predecessor Biomass, which eventually led to me becoming one in the first place.
This game it's not for everyone. It has a tutorial, a help menu and game mechanics are mostly explained. But what, where, why go or do not. Initially it seems very obtuse, things happen and you won't have an idea of why. Yet it's all worth it. After a likely disastrous gameplay, you will find yourself where you began, but you keep all your stuff and what you have learned. Each loop is another step in unveiling the mysteries of Foreign Sun. I'm by the third loop and I am still visiting places I had not seen before. Graphics are nice pixel art that runs at 90fps in my steam deck. Music it's quite good and varied. Some areas can be frustrating but nearly always you will eventually find a way to make them way easier. Environmental narrative and careful attention to dialogue, item descriptions and otherwise are key, too. Oh, and get that map. A soul is really worth it.
