"FlipSum - A Puzzle By Claris Richter" is a Sudoku like math puzzle game (because you know we all wanted to keep doing arithmetic after we left school) that's basically trying to compete with the puzzle section at the back of the newspaper. And, for some unknown reason, was published here on Steam through Steam Direct. What do you do in the game? You're given a number grid and some target numbers that you need to sum up to, and you flip the numbers on your grid between positive and negative until you get it right. Heck, Sudoku fans might even like this... and Sudoku is exactly the opposite of what anyone could consider a great PC gaming experience. Really, this could have done well as a mobile app or a browser page or a Facebook game, and the developer probably could have made some bank off that, too. But instead it's here on Steam where it failed to reach the completely wrong audience. The developers next game is a colour matching platformer for blind people, followed up with a planned music game for the deaf. Know your audience, guys. For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static text... it might as well be a web page. It's functionally no different from a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC. This game features very lacklustre minimalist "art" for graphics instead of anything remotely contemporary. I'm sure the "developer" thought this would come across as "artistic", but it doesn't, it comes across as "really lazy". Yes, contemporary 3D graphics take a lot of time and effort to create. That doesn't mean it's okay not to bother! Developers must try to understand that gaming is a visual medium, and gamers spend a lot of money on high end gaming rigs for a reason. And that reason is not so they can look at lazy, phoned-in half efforts like this. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.

This was actually fun to play. The soothing music while playing does not intrude at all and the puzzles make you think, especially after you THINK you have the correct solution and then you see something you missed and have to backtrack and fix it. Fun distraction and gets the brain cells working. Going to be awhile before I even attempt sensei mode.....
This is a nice game, but poorly implemented. With additionnal QoL features, this could easily be sold 5 to 10 euros/dollars. Pro:

rules are simples
difficulty seems well targeted
this is a nice puzzle format overall
Cons:

screens are embarrasingly slow to load (4 to 5 seconds), each time you go from one puzzle to another, or when loading the title screen
there is a severe lack of quality of life ; I would recommand to implement the following:

Very important:

a 'quit game' button
being able to switch puzzle, or even better, to pick a puzzle number, or among a list of same difficulty puzzles (being stuck on one puzzle, and not being able to pass it is very frustrating)
an undo/redo option (with keyboard)

Somewhat important:

adding more colors/types to color cells, to help with reflexion. I know it would break the ease with which one can use the mouse to color, but it could be only with left click, after choosing among a list of colors
adding free notes (with mouse drawing for example)

Minor:

each puzzle currently gives a certain number of 'stars', depending on the difficulty of the puzzle, but those stars serve no purpose ; it could be cool if those stars could be used (via spending or threshold) to unlock certains features/new puzzles/new difficulties
