6/10 Good math carefully disguised as a game. What is it: A game that’s basic arithmetic at its core. Add and remove quantities of five elements with a simple set of transform/boost/extinguish rules of interactions, in the spirit of the rock-paper-scisors-lizard-spock rules, or actually the taoist principles of the five elements (hence the name). If you mix water and wood, you get more wood. If you mix wood and fire, you get more fire. If you mix wood and soil or gold, they annihilate each other in equal quantities and you get what is left. You play on a grid of connected nodes, some with a given amount of a resource, some empty, some with an operation they apply the first time a ghost carrying a resource walks over them, some with gates that require one or more resource amounts before they unlock, and some as exit points. You control one or more “ghosts” that you can move between nodes on the grid, picking up the resources on each node they visit, until there are no more resources in the grid and each ghost reached an exit. There are different types of ghosts, each with its own rules, like greedy ghosts that always pick up all the resources they encounter, smart ghosts that can put back down any number of resources, or weak ghosts that lose one resource every time they move. Combining all the rules in a level can make up quite challenging puzzles, and solving them requires careful planning: which ghosts needs to carry what elements, when to put elements down, which resources to use to boost, transform, or destroy what it's carrying, when and how to use the incrementing/decrementing/halving/doubling tiles, which ghost goes to which exit, so much math! In essence, this is much closer to number games like kakuro, sumdoku or cross sum than a proper video game, but somehow it manages to be an actual, enjoyable game for those who don’t mind a bit (or a lot) of math. The mechanics are brilliant, and some of the levels are really clever. The different mechanics can be combined into puzzles with different styles, some are just about minding the element interactions, some are about finding the right path in what looks like a maze, some are about cleverly employing each ghost’s abilities, some require creatively splitting what ghosts carry, and many other types. I enjoyed solving most of the levels, but I really like math. But the game could be improved a lot both in terms of implementation and puzzle design. Around release time, the game used to be quite buggy, but the developers were very receptive and responsive, quickly fixing all the bugs we pointed out, so at least the game is less buggy. But something that can’t quickly be fixed is the overall design and layout, menus and navigation. It works, it’s not terrible looking, and those that like math challenges will be satisfied with the minimalist approach, but it would benefit a lot from the work of an actual game UI/UX designer. My main dislike is that although there are a lot of good levels, there are also a lot of levels that feel like fillers or are cheese-prone, underdesigned quick level dumps. This is especially true for the later chapters, which do introduce very powerful mechanics, so powerful that they easily overpower a weak level. When you have a ghost that can leave/carry any amount of resources, combined with ghosts or tiles that can increment/decrement a resource for every step, it’s easy to just sidestep in place while you count up/down to the required target number instead of doing the computation for precisely combining elements to reach the target. So, this is a good, innovative math game, but lacking polish in the implementation and needing a serious overhaul of half the puzzles. If you enjoy a brainy challenge, you should buy it. How hard is it: Easy to moderate, if you’re good at basic math. How long is it: 108 levels split into 9 chapters of 12 levels, each introducing a new mechanic. All levels in a chapter are unlocked, and unlocking the next chapter requires solving just 5 levels. 5-10 hours to finish, more or less depending on your math level. Level design: Good and bad, some great levels each with a unique feel, and some underdesigned levels. Quality: Decent, but could be improved. Some good puzzles, undo and restart, a basic but not really bad look. Cloud saving, progress achievements. Decent level select, other than the fact that it always scrolls to the top. Good controls, works with keyboard or a mouse, and it almost works with controllers out of the box, needs just a bit of tweaking, and the key mapping is configurable. Very few settings. It has a level editor, and has Steam workshop integration. Has a speed slider, but no input caching so still not responsive enough for my impatient taste. Worth the price: Yes. Most positive aspect for me: Interesting mechanics, some good puzzles. Most negative aspect for me: Some boring levels. What would make it better: Tweak the levels, remove the ones that aren’t that interesting, fix the ones that can be cheesed, add some more hard levels. More settings. Add a dark mode. Add input caching. Add some tricky achievements for solving levels in interesting ways. Work with a designer to make it look more like a game and less like a Windows 98 application. What a fantastic little puzzle game. Was a little confused until I understood what elements countered each other. The stages keep adding new challenges which is fun. For a few dollars I am happy with this game and would recommend if you like a bit of a challenge with puzzle games.
