I really wanted to like Fimbul. Was waiting since I originally read about it, I think a good few months or so before its release. The game delivers pretty well on the narrative & Norse mythology. The comic book style delivery of the narrative isn’t necessarily something I’m into but it works. Unfortunately, everything else seems to fall flat. The gameplay is interesting for the first 10 minutes, but then starts to drag on. An hour later and there doesn’t seem to be anything new, just some special skills that are fairly uninteresting, albeit it useful. Combat is stale and repetitive. I did like that you could throw a spear to either break an enemy’s shield, knock them to the ground or kill them. But the nature of the enemies surrounding you doesn’t leave much room for it to be a regular thing. This is also an issue in and of itself. Too many enemies surround you and often attack you midway through your attacks with no ability for you to cancel out. This can be considered part of the challenge but in a modern era where fluidity in combat is (or should be) the norm, it’s a fairly jarring & annoying experience. There are boss fights that are fairly underwhelming and because of the limited combat, it introduces nothing exciting. It’s pretty much just the same combat & mechanics, but the boss is a spongier & stronger version of the lesser enemies. Visually the game doesn’t do much, it’s okay & appealing but the animations, often during cutscenes, are embarrassingly mediocre. The best way to describe it; the character looks like they’re doing a fake walk during cutscenes. The camera system is also annoying. It feels almost like tank controls, especially when moving around in some buildings. But worse off, the camera is fixed in different positions in different scenes or areas. It makes it fairly difficult to navigate some of the areas & further increase frustrating during combat. I couldn’t really stomach much more of it hence the reason I had to stop my playthrough short. I could finish it given that the game isn’t too hard but excitement the game invokes is non-existent. I’m lucky I only paid about $6AU for it and while I don’t regret it, I’m not satisfied with it either. I want to recommend this game but I can’t. If I could give it a neutral review I would but since I’m more doubtful than sure people would enjoy it, I can only give it a negative/thumbs down. There was a good effort made though, you can tell Zaxis didn’t just slap a few textures together, throw it on Steam & call it a day. But it’s sadly not enough to keep me playing. If you like Norse mythology and you’re looking for a cheap game to fill some void of Norse games, then this should kind of fill it. It has a good narrative that would have probably been better off as an actual comic book rather than a game.
I didn't have to play this one for long to feel the painful experience. Combat is extremely clunky and dull. The visuals and level design is bland and uninspiring. The comic type cut-scenes are a nice touch to a story that might be interesting, but without the game-play to complement, it's a big thumbs down from me.
I enjoyed this game very much. I loved the graphic style which, albeit cartoony and to an extent minimilistic, drew me completely into the cold viking world it portrayed. The "normal" fighting against humans, whilst simplistic, was satisfying, although not overchallenging even when faced with large numbers of enemy. I would have welcomed a greater number of instances where I had to face off against enemy vikings. I did not really enjoy the Boss fights which, in each case, just seemed to go on and on and on and could be very frustrating if you made a stupid mistake right near the end and had to redo the fight. They all seemed to involve running and rolling around in circles, inbetween throwing spears. However, I accept that that is the nature of Boss fights and that my aversion to them is just my particular foible. I liked the story, which has a number of decisions to be made which you can revisit and try an alternative via the Lifeline; whether or not they add much varience to the story I don't know as I have to be honest, having completed the game on first run I wasn't immediately tempted to go back and redo alternatives. Though I probably will at a later date. The game IS short as has been commented on by others; it took me 7 hours mainly because i'm useless at Boss fights. However, I thought the price was OK, possibly a bit high, but Developers do have to subsist in the real world so I don't begrudge the £15 pound I paid. It is the sort of game which, if you don't want to play anything "heavy" in an evening, you can just fire up and have a relaxing couple of hours.
A nice, short game to pass the time, with nothing particularly noteworthy about it, excluding maybe the art style. Fans of Norse mythology might find something more attractive here, but for others, I'd say get it on a (small) discount if you need something to do for a couple hours.
Beautiful visuals, super sound, lots of fights. That's what it's all about. At times it looks like it came out a bit rushed, it misses some finishing touches... nevertheless this game guarantees a nice evening. P.S.1) the battle system feels strange in the beginning but once you master it, it's awesome. P.S.2) 20e for a less than 3 hours game is too much. Better wait for a good discount.
