An amazing and charming game. I just beat it for the first time and I'm actually invested enough to go back and trying to get all the side quests done. I didn't do that with Ghost of Tsushima. I didn't do that with Spiritfarer. And those games are designed to be incredibly emotional. I love games that sets up all the materials for you, the gamer, to choose your own level of investment. While most modern games are "cinematic experiences", this game lets you choose the pacing. It really made me feel like a kid again in how much these characters mean to me. This is absolutely worth every penny. I would absolutely buy a sequel.
Fates of Ort can best be described as a singleplayer RuneScape with superhot-style combat that has a heavy focus on magic. It features great music and quest design (with decisions that actually MATTER). However, the game is held back slightly by the slow exploration speed you experience prior to unlocking better mobility options. I highly recommend the game to fans of RPGs in this style. Pros: -Great art direction (both visual and audio) -Decisions that matter; for example, you make a choice within the first 10 or so minutes of the game that fundamentally changes how the magic system works for the rest of your run -Quests that intertwine with one another and which tend to have multiple solutions -Interesting lore and well-written dialogue -Tons of content, a variety of biomes to explore and NPCs to meet -High replayability Mixed: -Depending on your choices during gameplay and how much of the content you complete prior to attempting the end game challenges, you may trivialize what is intended to be the climax of the experience Cons: -Combat can get a bit repetitive and may feel tedious for some, this may also be amplified by choices you make during gameplay -Exploration can feel a tad slow given the size of the environments until you unlock more mobility options
Entertaining game made with great love clearly. I compare this to the wonderful Eschalon games but this one is better. The mechanics this game has kept the going fresh for me well until end credits rolled for my quite incomplete walktrough. I have almost nothing but praise for this. Style will of course not be of liking to many so that is the most obvious thing to look for. Don't listen to me if isometric, you-go-we-go kind of turn based adventuring is not to your liking. But if you have played your old school rpg games then this one is one of the better ones i have played in a long time. Some cons though: While the game doesn't have simple fetch quests and it has a internal hinting system for quests things can still get pretty complex. It is worth writing down special locations that are not in the journal. Early game is learning and survival and mid-game is about unlocking new areas but the end game... wow what a mess. You are now in end-game basically putting together the hot mess of a adventure you have had and since many quests have overlapping solutions that lock others out you are sometimes just one quest or location away from almost soft locking yourself. Almost, in reality it is usually that one thing you need to take a closer look in your journal. Or just go for the end finale. Which is what i did when i just could not quite figure out the last quests i had. At least i managed to save all the main characters that aid you in your adventure.
"Fates of Ort" is a 2D retro pixel (isometric) handheld (Switch) game that's been dumped on Steam as if it's a PC game. There's some good ideas here, RPGs are popular, but this one is a little dumbed down and shallow compared to the classics (but it is made for the Nintendo crowd, and not PC gamers). It's magic centric as you learn and use a variety of spells to plod through a somewhat generic fantasy adventure, only with crap graphics. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. "Fates of Ort" has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for uhh, disabling the Prismatic Aether Conduit atop Tarkumendo, (it's trivial to achieve), but less than 10 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. The game never really caught on with the millions of gamers on Steam, with a very low peak player count close to launch, and then just a handful of players launching this game every couple of days. This is undoubtedly caused by factors such as those raised in this review. It's always helpful with buying decisions to consider how popular and successful the product is, and unfortunately while this did accumulate a few participation trophy reviews, overall, people just aren't using it. "Fates of Ort" has the ridiculous price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. It's not acceptable to charge $15 for a video game when the developer can't even do graphics propetly and uses pixelcrap instead. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
It's a fun RPG where time moves only when you move, which makes combat a matter of positioning yourself properly and dodging projectiles. Casting spells costs health instead of any kind of mana points, which nicely ties in with the in-game lore. The final encounter can be approached relatively early in the game, but you are encouraged to explore the world, complete optional quests and become stronger for it. There is a nice variety of enemies, environments and characters, as well as plenty of decisions which pay off later in the game. Completing certain quests prevents you from finishing others, but this never comes as a surprise since the quest text always hints at this. My only complaint is that several times I experienced graphical glitches when I loaded a save, but they disappeared upon entering and exiting a building. Also, some spells and enchantments are absurdly powerful while there are others that I haven't used even once. Overall, a very well made game that gets tedious if you try to 100% it, but feels great for a casual playthrough.
An action rpg where time stops when you aren't doing anything. I thought it was a relatively unique and interesting concept and I was pleasantly surprised how well it was implemented. While your character gets stronger as it levels up, your maximum hp doesn't increase and spells can have an increasing demand of it as you cast the same spells. So if you decide to play the way I did, the game becomes an hp management as you try to cast the right variety of spells (some of which combo very well into each others) as you explore the land and complete questlines in hope of finding the next checkpoint. It was amazing. The game could have used more enemy variety and different bosses. I became so powerful that I wished something would gladly tank my barrage of spell. I did like the rival dynamic with the main villain, but a lot of it seemed to wane away as the dialogue never made much sense nor did the fights ever evolve as my winning streak increased.
Game is incredibly deep, with at least two ways to solve most quests, and very cool ways to use the spells you unlock.
"Fates of Ort" is a labor of love, offering fresh mechanics that are both simple to understand and deeply engaging. Its charming art style adds to the fun, creating an RPG experience unlike any other. With hours of engaging game-play, I would recommend it for anyone seeking a unique and refreshing take on the genera.
